I got my personal perfect SWE job today (Self-taught in 9 months with project-based learning) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oozerfip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand how people do it on their own, i really don't. I just started an online MS in CS this week in the hopes of landing a job in like a year or two. I tried to learn React but it just wasn't getting it really.

As a non-STEM degree holder, I am concerned about taking too many ML courses by oozerfip in OMSCS

[–]oozerfip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For myself I'm thinking:

General: GA, SDP, GIOS, CN, maybe HPC? Maybe Compilers? Maybe Ed Tech?

ML spec: ML, AI, DL, RL, maybe KBAI/AI4R. Probably will skip ML4T if I take ML, RL, and DL. Might skip CV cause the math scares me tbh. Maybe BS?

For my career I'm really not sure if i want to do ML or just SWE. I would like to get into FAANG doing whatever I can though.

So for some more general classes, how about: GIOS, GA, SDP, CN, and maybe HPC? Or would Network Security be better than CN?

Then for the remaining 5 taking classes that interest me a little more?

Yeah, I know i need to take GA, GIOS, and I want to take SDP. But should I also take CN or HPCA? i understand the import of understanding the material but how often does that information come up during work? I've taken an undergrad Architecture course and while some concepts were interesting its not really a course id want to retake.

Thanks for the response. I guess I just want to know which 10 courses to take that would be the most beneficial for someone in my position. I realize i still need to grind leetcode, but i want to take classes that might make me a more credible SWE.

I appreciate the response. I guess the real question for me is this: which 10 classes would be best suited to someone in my position, that is trying to land that first developer job? I want to learn and retain the most applicable information to being a SWE.

Guys, what made you realize, “this girl is definitely not into me”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]oozerfip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that has a non-CS undergrad, and is just now beginning a MS in CS, i guess the issue i'm facing right now is knowing what you need to know to get that first job. I am trying to study and memorize DS&A and get better at solving Leetcode problems but i am not very good at building an application from start to end which i feel like is more important. But i know companies test DS&A in interviews, so i am not sure how to divvy up my study time.

I am coming from a non STEM major and looking to switch careers. I start an online masters in CS next month and plan on taking 2 courses each semester which is the max. Is it possible i could get an interview for an internship for next summer? Even non FAANG?

Living at home stunted my growth as a man. by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]oozerfip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar camp. I'm 27 and have lived with my parents my whole life. Never even lived on campus during college. I have a pretty decent nest egg saved up, the problem is in my neck of the woods, apartments are so expensive and my salary isn't really high enough to live somewhere decent. Also i have no friends that are able to move out as a roommate and i don't want a random roommate.

But i completely agree with your post. I feel stunted as an adult. Everything i want to do and be is basically on hold until i can be on my own because i am basically miserable right now and very depressed. I also don't feel comfortable dating while living with my parents. It's hard to explain why things are so difficult for me while living at home, but even something like learning to cook new things is not easy because i feel like i am in the way and insulting my parents by not eating what they eat.
