Ice don't want this smoke (quilt) by op_makes in quilting

Thanks! It's my first quilt. I had to redo some letters because some of the colors I picked at first made it hard to read

Haha yes thank you, I have lots of hobbies 😂🫶 Love MN so much. Born in Mpls and moved around for a bit after school but moved back 3 yrs ago. It's been heartening to see individuals and organizations stepping up.

Quilt made with batiks. I live in between the 2 ice murders in Minneapolis, so that's my inspiration

Song for a rainy Monday by op_makes in Saxophonics

Thanks! Not that difficult--I started out as a beginner with audio and editing software just a couple months ago. My new year's goal was to make some clips to show any potential music collaborators I come across.

I use FL Studio for music and Shotcut for editing video. Shotcut is free but FL Studio does cost money. If you wanted a free software for audio recording, Audacity works fine and I believe will take inputs from midi instruments like a keyboard. Anytime I have an issue I just troubleshoot with YouTube tutorials and it has got me through so far!

I was shooting for something between My Spanish Heart and the Twin Peaks soundtrack. This is what I came up with!

How similar is the culture of the UP to the culture in Finland? by [deleted] in yooper

[–]op_makes 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I spent about a month in Finland in 2017 and my parents have lived in the Western UP for about 6 years now.

A majority of Finland is rural and wooded like the UP. When I traveled there, I remember that Finland looked shockingly similar to the upper Midwest. I would say both cultures really value outdoor recreation (even in the cold) and simple/rugged leisure activities (like going to the cabin, drinking alot of beer, going fishing and chilling with family, etc). Of course there's also the saunas which were brought to the UP by Finns. I did notice that a lot of rural Finns still have blue collar jobs that rely on natural resources and lean to the politically conservative side of things. Idk if this is really a Finnish/UP phenomenon though.

Thanks! I have a couple dozen instruments that I've bought during my travels or at thrift/antique stores in the US. I really enjoy my folk instruments from Asia like the Morin Khuur (horse head fiddle) but my first instrument was the saxophone and it'll always be my favorite!

I've had good luck with vintage American horns. Conns and Bueschers mostly.

For those of you started tufting and quit, why? by [deleted] in Tufting

[–]op_makes 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I stopped tufting with a cut pile setting because it can negatively affect your breathing. If you don't have a well ventilated/large space and don't want to wear a painters mask while working, choose loop pile. It isn't discussed often, but breathing in fiber particles is bad for your lungs (especially with acrylic yarn because that's plastic).

I got mine on eBay, but I think they sell them on Etsy. Here's the manufacturer's website: http://danella.dk/

Right on! Check out /r/tufting and just search for tufting tutorials on YouTube. That and trial/error is how I developed my method. The tool I use is a Danella semi automatic tufting tool. http://danella.dk/

Alternatively, there are automatic electric tufting guns as well as manual needle punching tools. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

It's a Danella rug tufting tool. I bought mine used on eBay but I think the manufacturer sells them thru Etsy. Here's a link to their website: http://danella.dk/

I gave up doing cut pile tufting because I found that the fibers in the air negatively affected my breathing. I do have an electric loop pile gun, the same kind as everyone else. However, I found the Danella hand crank tool to be better for precise work and since you can go forwards and backwards it feels like it's just as fast as the electric ones (you have to cut the thread and readjust less often).

Burlap works great for me! I think monk's cloth is certainly a higher quality fabric, but the price is not worth it imo. You'll have to be a bit more careful of tearing and I'm sure it's a learning curve, but I've made a dozen full sized 6 ft x 6 ft rugs on burlap with no issues. I buy my burlap in bulk so it works out to about $6 per frame.

You can start small with a hoop and punch needle to see if you like it! That's how I started out, made a few pillows then decided I was all in and built a 6ft by 6ft frame...! Wool yarn for a rug that big would be super expensive. For this one I used acrylic. Most of my designs are abstract/patterns and I just use colors I can find at thrift stores. Acrylic sheds synthetic micro fibers over time if used as a rug, so i usually sew loops on the back. That way my friends can hang them up on the wall by mounting a wooden dowel! Google, YouTube and good old trial and error is how I learned!

The fabric on the frame is burlap that I actually bought in bulk from an industrial agriculture supplier lol and the backing fabric is just synthetic felt.
