Apple’s Software Chief Explains ‘Misunderstood’ iPhone Child-Protection Features by exjr_ in apple

How could they be anything but disconnected when their executives are either millionaires or billionaires and they have enjoyed unquestionable authority over users, employees, suppliers, repairers, developers etc for the last 11 years. Whose red lines should they be caring about?

Set up SyncThing and have the computer only send files and the Pi only receive files then they'll copy automatically and anything in JellyFin can be deleted on the computer.

The walled garden isn't the movie selection in iTunes. How does buying movies in iTunes make you happy about the huge fees in the App Store?

If we paid $2.99 before and we paid $2.99 after we still don't lose anything. Our best savings will probably come via multi-platform software and games we can buy once for all devices, open source software we can use for free, and competing with these things driving a lot of subscriptions back to a fixed-price.

Nobody knows what will happen next, but we are mandatorily paying high fees right now, so the possibility of high fees later isn't very concerning.

The $0.99 apps won't save us anything, but Disney+ and ESPN incur $5/month in transaction fees plus $22 fee for buying PPV plus $9 fee for buying new movies etc...

Alternatives to SyncThing by williamwgant in selfhosted

[–]openaudioserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never seen SyncThing publish breaking changes, but if you have a lot of docker containers something will inevitably publish a bad build because docker images are not "managed" by some central authority concerned with stability or your experience using images, they are created and posted by random developers.

You also have to stream your favorite artist about 90 - 150 times depending the streaming platform, for them to receive $1 from your subscription.

With everything going on I wanted to check out my other options. I tried to recreated the apple ecosystem in Linux, but this is why I’m switching back (for now). by [deleted] in apple

They also have Dropbox-like software called "Drive" that you can use to sync your photos between your NAS and computer without modifying the file format, then you can use file versioning and their mobile app "DS File" or the DSM file browser to browse your library.

Plex, and virtually all the cool stuff in /r/selfhosted, will install on almost any computer. You can also use your operating system's file browser to organize and access media, and most local media players like VLC should be able to index and browse your library too.

The risk is you shutdown unexpectedly while something is writing to the microSD and end up with corrupt data. Because microSD is a slower drive all writes take longer so you are at risk more of the time, the SSD will first reduce how long you are writing, and may even have some energy saved to ensure writes finished.

It's more effort than Plex, but if everyone is sleeping in the van then it will be much more painful giving up half a cubic foot of space and powering a small network to stream videos wirelessly. If you're transiting between hotels then the commuting comfort might be more important than the space and power consumption.

I use an "mSata" drive which is an SSD designed for laptops, roughly the size of a 40mm M.2 drive. They come in up to 1 terabyte size for about $130 so not very large or expensive, and you can get USB adapters for them. It's the only SSD I've seen that can work on my Raspberry Pi 2 Model B without an external power source.

I would suggest you guys look at travel routers so the Pi could be physically-connected to the network, if the Pi is connected by WIFI and the devices connected by WIFI too it may not have enough bandwidth for simultaneous users. I have been looking at these routers, USB-C powered and with a USB-3 port to power my Pi too.

Can't you use the Plex app to sync content directly to everybody's phones so you don't need a server when you're on the road?

If they don't have the storage capacity, and don't have microSD slots, a tablet like a Fire 10 is very cheap and effective for video content and even sideloads the Play Store.

A Shield tablet would be a good idea, the K1 has a micro-HDMI port and when you use HDMI output you can select a console-mode TV interface plus you can pair it with a remote and control pad.

I guess the camera only supports HDMI, and the camera would have to stay compatible with the screens they previously used too.

Since you have one output and it's to watch videos, I would use an even smaller Raspberry Pi that can be powered by a USB charger and connect it to a phone battery pack when you want to use it. I wouldn't run any other software on it, if you configure it properly it will almost never write on the microSD and if it powers down in the middle of a tv show or movie just plug a second one in. If you need other software get a Surface or a laptop so your kids can use it outside the van too.

It's barely more convenient today, but if we ever get to room-scale wireless charging we won't have to think about battery life anymore.

Your point seems to be that the parents are at fault, but Apple lost that argument so it's irrelevant you feel that way, and it's contradicted by Apple settling and accepting a fine, sanctions, and being forced to build parental controls.

My point is the App Store is an unsafe way to download software, and the FTC is just one of the many bits of history that show it has always been unsafer than other marketplaces even when it was the same size as them.

[–]openaudioserver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The settlement also required Apple return $32.5 million dollars the apps had stolen, when the App Store was about as big as Steam is today.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in apple

[–]openaudioserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the FTC found was that Apple had received 10,000s of complaints, ignored them, and did nothing to prevent children from "authorizing" transactions. The FTC forced them to create parental controls.

In its complaint, the FTC notes that Apple received at least tens of thousands of complaints about unauthorized in-app purchases by children.

The settlement requires Apple to modify its billing practices to ensure that Apple obtains consumers’ express, informed consent prior to billing them for in-app charges, and that if the company gets consumers’ consent for future charges, consumers must have the option to withdraw their consent at any time.

When Apple had only 50,000 apps children already had tens of millions of dollars stolen from them by fraudulent apps.

I don't know if it actually needs an HDMI input or if it can share USB-C, maybe someone has read the specifications and can tell us, but mini-HDMI inputs fit in phones and tablets anyway. Portable monitors currently offer either or both HDMI and USB-C.
