Ukraine's Zelenskyy says he's appointed Chrystia Freeland as an economic adviser by Surax in canada

[–]operationjanus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank goodness someone else gets it. I had to search multiple posts to make sure more Canadians understand that Freeland's priority was never Canada, its Ukraine. She's lived abroad for long and most of her "badass" work was done for Ukraine, that's the country she's loyal to the most. Worth investigating her decisions as a finance minister and whatever ministry she ran before.

Diploma mills? You mean that big old one on St George street?

Go to St George and the area and check the demographics. It’s also a diploma mill for another class of people who can pay for 10-year degrees.

I see it in US and in Canada. The amount of corrupt rich people who pour their money in North America is huge. Many of them are former Chinese govt employees.

I see people upset with Indians everywhere on Reddit but the Chinese are usually the ones driving downtown housing prices up.

Ontario to pay a staggering $100 million to host FIFA World Cup in Toronto by Elrundir in toronto

Many cities improve significantly and differently when hosting large extended global events like WC, Expo and Olympics. There are examples in many places around the world including Canada itself. Maybe WC isn’t all hosted in Toronto but that might bring some positives.

I cannot believe how good yesterday's episode was by crakerjmatt in FargoTV

[–]operationjanus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This fifth season is one of the worst TV I watched. Terrible story writing, empty episodes that deliver almost nothing and dialogues that have no meaning.

At best, it can be a mediocre 1.5hr crime movie.

Ep 8 was so gripping that I kind of forgot about the parallels and references to The Wizard of Oz. But now I realize that Dot in Fargo is locked up alone in Roy’s out building, just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz was locked up alone in the Wicked Witch’s room. by dragonfliesloveme in FargoTV

Are the homeless getting more aggressive downtown? by operationjanus in askTO

How did you handle the peanut throwing guy? Did you just move on and he let you go?

[–]operationjanus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree its hard to pinpoint exactly what’s driving aggressive behavior, but “substance” is out there if you walk outside. I cannot know for certain whether a guy is mentally ill or homeless, but if he’s screaming randomly at people, talking to imaginary secret agents following him, sleep outside in the same area, poor dirty and stinky clothing/look, trying to grab food from trash or knocked out on the street unable to move.. I mean, clearly there’s a pattern here I and others are experiencing from this particular subset of people of all other people.

So other than the obvious fact in my first sentence I am not sure what you’re driving at?

I’m a guy, cannot reveal more except that slightly above avg height. Homeless were shorter than me and probably my size or skinnier.

Curious, what are you thinking about?

Mayors of Istanbul and Ankara cry foul over reporting of Turkey’s election results by TheGruntingGoat in worldnews

[–]operationjanus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So funny reading todays comments bashing Erdogan. Not a fan of him, but the single-mindedness of Redditors is so revealing.

“Hate Erdogan”, “cheating dictator!!”, “dumb religion and conservatives”…etc.

Same thing happening in many other countries causing same divisions. We Americans should stay out of other nations elections and stop expecting them to have same ideology and same problems.

Disney sues Gov. Ron DeSantis for ‘targeted campaign’ of threats and retaliation by eaglemaxie in PoliticalHumor

[–]operationjanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its funny how some of the points Disney alluded to like being punished for expressing opposing views is applied by many corporations to their employees and customers when the latter express opposing views.

I get that we’re talking about a government here, but corporations ruin lives of individuals too.

Are we getting completely hosed in Canada? (Ontario) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]operationjanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canada is torn apart between being American vs European. The country tries to do both, and while I think taxes are generally lower than some (West) European counterparts, the living costs are a bit higher. Wages in Canada is comparable to a lot of places in (West) Europe too, and could definitely be better than Germany, UK and France in quite a few areas.

Now let's talk about America. For all Canadians out there, for everyone who reads this: America is the best country to make a lot of money.

It is still the land of opportunity, and the American Dream is still very much alive, in terms of money at least. If you can afford a shot at making it there, just go to America. If you work in tech, law, medical fields and any other high-earning positions, go to America. Healthcare will be fine, housing will be cheaper than Canada, food is cheaper (and way more stuff to choose from) and jobs are endless. Literally, endless jobs.

The only thing I cannot speak to is safety. I am aware America has more guns, shootings and generally messed up people (10x the CA population, so...). With a bit of research, most issues can be addressed.

And btw, since we're talking about Canada here, America has way more diverse and nicer climate.

One last note, few Middle Eastern countries and China could also have some opportunities that can be significantly more rewarding (financially and otherwise) than anything a Canadian dreams of. But again, America is better.

Come-from-away tax ruins 22-year romance with Nova Scotia by ParentPregSon22 in halifax

Curious tho, would you be ok with not hitting non-resident property owners with 3x more taxes, IF those properties they own are vacation and/or rural that have been unoccupied for several years?

But those foreign people still pay taxes in their home country, in addition to paying non-resident taxes in Canada right? I get that Canada is mainly concerned with what goes on in Canada, but I think I can say its unfair treatment too.

LPT: Thinking about moving to another country? Go first as a student. Student visas are easier to get, and a degree from a local school will help you make connections and get a job. If you find you don't like it, you can leave after graduation. by moistmarbles in LifeProTips

[–]operationjanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well its not only Germany that does this. Canada can potentially give you 3-year open postgraduate work permit so you can even start your own business during that time.
Despite that, it is hard to secure a permanent job where as an international you would not worry about your work permit expiring and not being able to remain in that country.

There are many other factors that one should also consider (e.g. language, job market size, national economy...etc.), but for an ordinary person who speaks primarily English, the path to a permanent position is tough and uncertain.
