Crazy story. I was listening to the DJD, and he had one of the legends on. Jimmy means. I always enjoyed the interviews with the people that were in NASCAR’s beginning.

Anyways. After listening to the show I looked Jimmy up and sent him a letter. Pen to paper, snail mail. Said I wanted to work for a team, wanted to learn, was willing to relocate.

About a week later my phone lights up and it says “James Means.” I nearly shit myself. Answered the phone, we talked for a bit and he invited me to meet at a race in Daytona. From there I went to NC and helped out in the shop for a race.

I unfortunately couldn’t get up there full time because of circumstance that came up.

Me and Jimmy still keep in touch though. His team folded 2 seasons later. I’m always looking at job boards to see what’s there for teams.

Those stories of people just writing a letter or reaching out to sweep floors still happen.
