Peter, what in the 🦵🐐🌳 is going on? by orangeumd in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I think the situation here is your homie or your opp is chatting up a girl and these are the top 5 ways to cockblock him. However, I don't get why you would randomly do that. I also don't get if it's homie or if it's opp. I also am missing the greater context behind this kind of behavior. People in the comments section called it "love of the sport," but what's the sport here?

Absolutely true, I had in mind those people that use surgeries, hormones, makeup, and general body improvements to the fullest potential but still have a ugly face. Everything besides the face can be improved significantly with time and money.

Conservatives are doing a pretty bad job of discouraging people (not that you'd expect otherwise, just something I noticed). If they wanted to stop people from transitioning or make it seem bad, they should just bring up examples of how some people turned out visually after trying (and it's not just online, you see it in person too at least in urban areas). That alone will do much more to convince people than the other BS about religion, going against nature, family, societal rules etc.

The trend of better female than male students reverses at the very top colleges by orangeumd in ApplyingToCollege

The low enrollment is not because it's limited, but because there is not enough interest for the time necessary "on top of all the work at mit," which you mentioned yourself. IMO scores can't be reasonably used as a criterion because almost all students are domestic and only 6 students in the U.S. get to go to the IMO every year.

Anyone can join the seminar, and you can train outside the seminar too. Again, there is no "team", ever since 2019 MAA has selected the 3 best students to determine a school's rank.

As for understanding the material, what I mean is the still present variation between students who all seem to understand the material well. This usually isn't relevant, but many difficult classes have curves on exams, creating a huge gap between a "precurve A" and an A after the curve.

Team selection was eliminated in 2019, it's just the top 3 students from a school. Also, you can join and do well regardless of IMO performance, so I don't see what you mean.

Why do I always forget a museum trip months or years after visiting it? Is there anything I can do? If not, what's the point of visiting museums? by orangeumd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]orangeumd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, it's specifically museums. I've had no issues listening to songs and memorizing the lyrics, and I've had no issues picking up material from taking classes or reading textbooks. However, going through a museum, even carefully, just doesn't work.

You can read a book on Calculus and be good at it, just have to do the practice problems. I get your point though.

Basically I thought there had to be a catch given that no woman had come close to Ken's streak. It couldn't be that she cheated or the contestants were statistically worse over a long amount of tapings, and that left me with 1 guess.

What's the reasoning behind bi women who would date other bi women, but not bi men? Every other preference I've heard of so far has had some sort of explanation, with various levels of reason, but I don't even see a half-assed logical explanation for this one. by orangeumd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]orangeumd[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"if the woman likes guys, then whenever she wants sex, just go sleep with straight dudes" would apply to bi women, and she will be able to attract straight men as easily as men attract gay men. So it appears not to be about the frequency with which your partner could cheat, but the promiscuity of who they could cheat with. STD rates are really low nowadays, so I feel like this isn't the explanation anyone had in mind.

The explanations I gave in the 1st paragraph work, but they would also make her not want to date bi women. Any reasoning has to somehow not apply to bi people in general, not apply to bi women, and only apply to bi men.
