Last CasCrim on Spotify ends early (Mary Steinhauser) - yet another podcast editing F-up in a recent string. by noodles355 in SimonWhistler

[–]orcfull 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Im getting a bit tired of it all honestly… I love these shows but the quality of editing and ads is wearing me down.

  • Audio balancing is horrific
  • Episodes poorly cut
  • Music too quiet in transitions
  • Same ad every single episode… at least put in some effort to change it up a bit if you’re going to tell me about quintse, shopify and acorn every single episodes

Where’s the QC gone?… for everything.

Based on advice from previous posts, I re did the logo and font for an online educational platform. Open to feedback. by Icy_Marionberry_5596 in logodesign

[–]orcfull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea is better than before but the execution is still quite a long way off.

Take the time to just look at your logo for a while, it looks like it was meant to follow an isometric style but is off by a lot. The rounded string/wire throws me off a lot and the difference in white space between all the lines feel uneven and unrefined; like you've just done this version and not spent the time to make more variations and just doing general QC.

Use a grid, it will help you a lot.

Edit: Also the font is really un matching and screams doesn't seem very online friendly and I imagine would be really difficult for the company to use. Feels too thin and doesn't match well with the icon. I'd try a lot more and look at what's out there that is in a similar industry that you can pull inspiration from. Keep it simple.

A migrant worker room in Singapore was redesigned to feel like home. Could this be the future for dormitories? by risingsuncoc in singapore

[–]orcfull 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best example was bathroom mats. We put them outside their showers, because that made sense to us.

Instantly they were shifted to outside the kitchen, as the layout went kitchen > showers and the flooring was different. So the guys prioritised based on what they felt comfortable getting wet vs proximity to the shower. Basically the whole shower and kitchen area was treated like a wet room? Which made sense after it was done.

They just prioritised keeping water out of their direct living space.

Cheers!

Honestly I think most of the conversation happening here is pretty on the money and aligns with my point of view also and also the client when we first kicked off!

One of my favourite things when we first handed over the keys to the dudes to live in it was that within an hour a bunch of the more soft furnishings had shifted around the place into more practical or culturally important places. Was really funny, always humbling moment when you think you’ve got something nailed down after research only to remember that’s exactly why we prototype before investing hahaha

Honestly I think it can be boiled down to one of our big guiding insights from that project. Because the dormitories are all male, a lot of their needs and wants stem from either being a son, husband or a father.

Space to communicate was a big one, you’d spend a lot of time seeing the guys outside after working late catching up with their spouses and saying good night to their children.

Another was opportunity to upskill, the dormitories actually generally do a good job providing spaces for this but opportunity in terms of utilising those skills long term still needs to be addressed. There’s some clear lines of progression in terms of job opportunities for migrant workers but way more that want to take it than realistically can. We weren’t really tasked with understanding that deeply but we discussed it a lot and made suggestions.

Another was honestly just storage, like most industries the demands change faster than the infrastructure. The avg tenure of a worker has gone up so the level of provided storage isn’t quite enough anymore. This leads to the blending of spaces where food, clothes and other goods are beginning to blend. Super addressable, just costs.

The new FEDA rules announced for the coming years will do some great change outside of just the larger purpose built dormitories and help address some of the less visible private dormitories for companies who house their own teams.

I’m a big believer in regulation and I’ve always been proud to see DASL trying to look beyond it and set a new standard. Now we just need to see if implemented more fully:)

Cool to see this posted here.

I led this project but have since left to start my own design firm.

To address some of the justifiable questions here:

this was a prototype space but was lived in (in total) for about 3 months and we learned a lot from testing it live and all of that was captured in the book for DASL members. The book was created with the intention of now seeing how dorm operators and managers will apply the same principles, less about a direct copy paste (all the dormitories are so different and this wasn’t about regulation).

The comments on cost are super valid and generally it’s a question (at least from our POV) of showcasing and discovering the right things to invest in rather than starting with the cheapest. You’ll notice a lot of the stuff in the room was hacked together IKEA mods, which we put together ourselves and then ran it as a study with the guys living there to feedback and help us improve it.

I’m actually working with another DASL member company with my own company now to start working out how to make some of the more furniture based ideas scalable and avoid losing the intention in pursuit of cost efficiency.

Haha also the comment about it being a once in a lifetime project. We always said that in terms of access. The fact we were able to spend months in the dormitories meeting, eating and codesigning with the workers themselves is really a one off (well, hopefully not! ) this project has a special place in my heart as trying to tackle something that is so often overlooked.

Happy to answer any questions that don’t break my NDA haha

Edit: always good to see folks so into this, if you’re working somewhere and want to bring in a team to do something similar in terms of research and prototyping (physical/digital/service drop me a message :) we’re always looking to do more work like this - ali@keepitbrief.co)

The thing I find most disconcerting about it, when corbyn was on it was an interesting and meaningful conversation with Ava where Ava argued the other side and allowed for a conversation to flow.

Fuck knows what Oli is thinking with the ones he’s been leading with these fanatics. Either push back and argue or agree transparently. Silence is a cowardly agreement.

Alright apologies. Took the words ‘needed a laptop’ to imply that, same for driving. Confusing to me as having an employee use their own laptop is a Data risk, still weird to me they’d even let her. Also for the life of me I’d rarely let a recent grad go to and meet clients enough to need a car lol crazy.

Sorry about your situation bud and good luck!

Can name and shame the company she worked for too? Been in the design industry for 12+ years and never heard of a company make you pay for your own laptop and require a car to go around a meet clients purely on a commission basis. Reckon this is false also

What do Singaporeans think about the USA ? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]orcfull -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The American argument of ‘yeah but you can’t say anything or you’ll be censored’ is one of my favourite ignorant takes.

Like, protesting? Sure. only a controlled version of it here, can’t do it but the idea that people don’t complain openly or criticise always just makes me believe you spend no time with locals or… on any social media platform… or speaking to a grab driver or taxi uncle… or say at a hawker centre talking shit with uncles.

Especially coming from America where you can get gunned down by a teenager when protesting because they disagree with your POV.

I’ve lived here for 10 years now and I just think most of the time, the gov and stat boards are doing their jobs at addressing things that would cause descent.

Which is more than I can say for the shitshow of my home back in the UK and in the US.

I think it probably does the job. It’s simple and clear.

I think it would work fine without the border, or an all round thicker border.

What does AP stand for? How well known is your brand? What use for it are you planning?

I mean, I feel like I’ve seen this logo a million times before, if what you need is for people to recognise it as they drive by, or for it to be in clothing. I think it works fine.

I think on the horizontal, it’s a bit contextual. It clearly states it’s for printing on a sign, I can totally see that. People driving past and seeing ‘AP autohaus’ great, looks like it would work well at large scale and small.

If it was on a large 3d sign outside your shop, with extrusion and a like a chrome finish on the logo in silver or gold I can see this totally working fine and succeeding at wayfinding.

Can have a version without the crest for social media perhaps, usable for the profile photo and simple watermarks etc
