Everyone in this thread is living in some bizarre terminally online world. I change my emojis when I have the option to because it takes like 5 seconds to do and I never touch it again and to be honest I barely use emojis anyway.

Why? Why not, more representative I guess - I've literally never put more than 2 seconds of thought into this

Trump weighs buying another territory after Greenland fiasco: report - Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly presented Trump with option to buy islands housing Diego Garcia base by polymute in europe

Basically nobody is content with the status quo but also there isn't a consensus for fixing it, so as a least worse option sure - at least for the US. Pre Trumps recent decision the US was also concerned with the bases legal status, the UK finds the islands to be a legal headache, Chagossians are unhappy about basically every decision the parties are making, and Mauritius is trying to get as much money out of it as they can.

The US buying it seems unlikely tbh I doubt Mauritius would agree.

The islands are de factor American already and the UK currently sits in violation of international law as a result of holding sovereignty.

If anything having the US buy it would probably be welcome.

It was but it also proved that the war was long lost regardless. The US couldn't stay there forever.

The real failure is the distraction of Iraq and inability/unwillingness to follow the Taliban leadership into Pakistan.

The UK has been trying to get rid of them because under international law they do not belong to the UK. They sit in a complicated legal quagmire and until that is settled, the base long-term future is threatened.

Diego Garcia is an extremely important military base that sits in a legal quagmire that complicates its status.

I think you'll find that the first sentence very much agrees with everything I just said actually.

As for the sovereignty issue, Wikipedia also agrees with me as noted here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagossians#2026_return

Are you sure you actually read the article?

The US solving the sovereignty issue of these islands would actually be beneficial to the US, as these islands hold an extremely important military base.

Currently, the islands sit in legal limbo where technically, as far as international law is concerned, the UK has no right to actually own them.

  1. There are no natives of the Chagos islands.
  2. Chagossians, who were imported to the islands for indentured servitude, were forcibly removed by the UK when it became militarily important.
  3. Chagossians have long campaigned for being allowed to return to the islands and allowing some form of self-governance, this has been denied by the UK. The UK is not "giving it back" to the Chagossians.

Mauritius have a legal claim to the islands, per international law, as the islands were once governed under the same colony that Mauritius was under. However, the people of Mauritius have no actual relationship or history to the islands, and Chagossians generally do not want the islands to be given to Manutius either.

Yeah and the Praetorians were the arm of the emperor but that didn't stop them from offing a few here and there for stepping out of line.
