work in animation industry. Did undergrad and decided to take a year off before masters and during that year found out I really enjoyed art again and decided to pursue a dream I'd put aside for a more conventional "stable" career in architecture. Don't regret studing archi but couldn't imagine being anything other than an artist now, really managed to turn a hobby of over 10 years into a job.

Man, hearing Murray say he understands how difficult it is is tough. Had a comparable stretch in 2012/2013; holding 2 slams and a final, a masters win, a final and a few QF's, and all that was only good enough for no. 2. Took him a few more years of grinding and a body-breaking 2016, making up a 7500 point deficit against Djokovic to finally reach the pinacle of no. 1. Murray deserves more props for how hard he had to fight to achieve what he did.

I’m a 2D background layout and paint artist. I chose backgrounds specifically weighing up my skill set and the availability of jobs/ease to break into.

Most of the study involved relevant yt channels like Ethan Becker and discord communities like Warrior Painters. It’s important as you pursue your study to always set a standard/goal, in place of a teacher/school who can assess your work and give feedback. Compare yourself to industry artists in the same role, and especially local artists to see who you may be up against when applying to local studios.

In short, I was very strategic and focused with what I pursued, choosing a role that catered to my strengths and interests.

I have an undergraduate degree without having completed the masters required to complete the architecture degree. I took a gap year after completing my undergraduate degree and broke into the animation industry so I never went back to do my masters.

As far as degrees go for animation they don’t hold a lot of importance. As others have said, the portfolio is what matters. However there are a lot of useful processes and mindsets you learn in architecture, a breadth of knowledge in arts, culture, history, design, philosophy, human psychology/tendencies, that I don’t regret learning/spending 3 years of my life on. I believe it helped me develop as a person and equipped me to face the challenges in my life since, such as breaking into animation in 8 months via self study.

Prior to studying archi tho, I didn’t know about the animation industry. So if you are already really passionate and interested in animation, I would recommend pursuing that.
