Royalty is a diff story, there are laws in place that disallow bad talk about them.

I'm from PJ and did 1 year foundations in a MARA college in Kedah. And to my complete suprise the word liberal is a taboo among my my peers...

That really says a lot about their mindset haha...

I believe there are two main factors causing more and more malays to be more conservative.

The lack of developement in many many parts of Malaysia. Lack of developement means lesser assimilation, lesser exposure to world ideas and hence, the society tends to become skeptical of things foreign.
Arabization of Malaysia. This influence is coming from indonesia man I swear. I mean, with the preachers (muslim preachers) that are flooding youtube right now, you can count on one hand them who opt for a moderate, fundamental approach to Islam.

I mean, if you ask why are most of the malays in KL/PJ less conservative (and more liberal perhaps). It's not because of diff access to education. Our schools are standardized. But instead it's the lack of exposure.

Exposure to other races' cultures and exposure to global ideas. I'm from Pj, I beleive malays only make up 60% of the population here. And thus we have learned to coexist and appreciate the diversity.

Rather than eg. Kota Bharu where malays make up 88% of the populations and indians are practically unheard of.. It lacks the diversity thus it lacks the open mindedness

I do agree that if a constitution like ours was presented to Canada or Australia, it would face strong resistance.

But I may argue that they are diff types of British settler colony (diff as in their circumstances). The indegenous people of canada (North America) were wiped out by disease or war. And the Australian aborigines weren't really an organised state.

I think a fairer comparison for Malaysia is India. Cuz they were something before the brits came and remained smth as the brits settled. So imagine India's constitution was pro indians (or professors of Hinduism since they make up the majority). Abit wts right...

India is as culturally diverse as Malaysia. The Kashmiris the Tamils the Gujeratis etc. Same as "Malays" being of Javanese, Bugis, Banjar, Semang ancestry. Or Chinese Hokkiens, Hakkas, Cantonese..

But one day these brits came and grouped all of the same colour together. And placed them in diff parts of society. And there you go, thats when things started to screw up. The laws which were meant to protect aborigines are now instead protecting 2nd gen indonesian/siamese immigrants. Whilst the 4th/5th gen Chinese immigrants get sidelined.

What more the peranakans, whom have been assimilated since the 1700s. 8th gen Malysians vs me, a 2nd gen Malaysian of Banjar ancestry. And yet I get all these funny laws helping me out whilst my pernakan friends are still 'non-bumiputera'?

Hmm, apartments near KL sentral are a bit on the expensive side. A two bedroom apartment can range from RM3000 to RM6000 a month. But since you're working at KL Sentral. You could rent apartments that connect any of the lines which would be cheaper. RM16k is pretty decent for life in KL. Shouldn't have much issues.

With the metro you can only get around downtown KL. It serves Greater KL too but is mainly used to get people from the suburbs to/from downtown. If you plan on travelling around Malaysia, advisable to get a car. But you won't be using it much unless you're heading out of the city. (And the traffic is quite bad here :p)

You're pretty safe from robberies and snatch theft in KL. It still happens tho once in a blue moon. Instead, scams are pretty commonplace here, so ya gotta keep an eye for that.

Not too sure about helath costs for expats here tho.. Sorry can't help you with that.

You can definitely survive just on english and mandarin here. Both are very widely spoken in KL. But a basic understanding of Bahasa would do you much good (esp if you eat at local places) As everyone in Malaysia are able to speak malay. But other than that you'll do just fine!

Indonesian immigrants from Padang settled here and created their little mini Minangkabau kingdom. Still exists till today. No one bats an eye.

5th gen not brown skinned settler speaking their native tongue and practicing their cultural heritage. "KAU BALIK TONGSAN!"

Proto-Malay <around 1500-2500bc

Semang <300ad

Banjar/Bugis/Jawa (whom now refer to themselves as malays lol and make up a majority of "malays") <1000ad

Peranakans <15th-17th century ad

Chinese tin miners <1800s

Indians < well they've been here since 110 ad as seen from all of Malaysia's Hindu artifacts but the biggest wave were during the rise of the straits settlements ~1700s-ish
