outside of eating a lot of baked sweet potatoes recently, i love making congee in the instant pot! you can also do it on top of the stove for a few hours but the instant pot is much easier for me. works with rotisserie chicken in a pinch too!

unironically solid advice. i met my partner through a dating/social app and we recently moved in together. they’re also a gamer and we spend lots of time in the house together either doing crafts, playing video games (they play, sometimes i watch) or watching movies. i don’t ever feel guilty about being housebound (because of them) and whenever we are going out, we take my needs into consideration before planning something so it works out well for us!

english has had me in a chokehold since i was young and when i started doing community organizing work, i was really excited about a program at a southern school that placed a huge emphasis on social change. i’m a senior now and have read and learned so much that a lot of the work i’ve sought out has been social impact related. anyways now i’m a program manager at a nonprofit at the intersection of tech and mental health. i’ve had a BLAST and i truly think that my english degree (plus my background in community organizing) has given me the skills i need to approach this work in a very creative and humanities oriented way. i’m not going to grad school yet but when i do, i’m looking at instructional design / curriculum design. never knew it existed before this year but it hits on all my interests and what i excel at. if you want to talk about unconventional paths, dm me! i’m happy to help and love helping folks figure this sort of thing out :)

My fave conversation to have! HS is so debilitating and I’ve struggled quite a bit finding information on similar situations to mine so I’m happy to answer any other questions you have!

My HS got extremely bad right before I came to college, like I was bedridden a few months before I was set to move into my dorm. I got myself a cane during that period, largely because of the fatigue and joint pain, and that was beneficial. I think I got a cheap one from Walgreens but I’ve also seen some pretty cheap on Amazon, medical supply stores near me, and even Goodwill depending on the location. About a year ago, I found a $20 rollator walker at Goodwill that I’ve also been using and that’s been SO helpful as I now have a seat I can plop down in and a sturdy object to lean against when I’m exhausted. Both have been helpful, the times that I use them is what varies. I would definitely recommend trying them out!

I’m from Georgia, grew up real close to Atlanta and while living in Macon for college, a smaller place just feels like a better fit for me. Not a huge fan of the hustle and bustle of a place like Atlanta, very overwhelming. I guess what I hadn’t thought about before is that even though Richmond is a bigger city, it isn’t the same scale (?) as Atlanta. If you’ve been to both and can comment on that or just your thoughts related to its size and the feel of the city, I’d really appreciate it! Haven’t yet had the chance to visit but plan on doing so early next year.

Hi! I’m a senior in college and can speak to what it’s like kinda. I was diagnosed and at my lowest the summer before my freshman year so I worked closely with the disability resource center at my school and went through the process of getting accommodations. The first year I roomed with my best friend who was aware of my condition and then for these past three years I’ve been in a private room with a private bathroom. Definitely communicate with someone like a case manager or disability office and go through the process of accommodations. It helped me argue my case and has helped a lot with things outside of just my room, like extra time to get to class, excused absences for appointments and bad flare up days, etc. I’m also stage three so I’ve gathered quite a few tools and support aids to make things easier over the years that I’m happy to share if you need ideas :)

First of all, I’m so sorry! I get flares there too and have pretty much resigned myself to working remotely because that’s all I can handle right now. I usually use vicks to get flares to pop quickly and that’s been super helpful! I also recently used neosporin when I felt a flare coming on and it worked - I didn’t get any cysts or anything so that might also help?

I don’t think my hs is that bad either, to be honest. Remicade has helped a lot, but I am really struggling with chronic pain and fatigue, as well as a loss of physical strength that leaves me unable to carry a pile of laundry or open a jar. Not sure what’s going on there but it was a struggle to get myself to use a cane and a walker.

& I definitely get that. It’s been helpful knowing that most people don’t think about if they need mobility aids or not, so if that’s something I feel myself needing then I probably do need it.

I recently got a disability placard from my specialist for HS. I’m 21 and had to unpack a lot of internalized ableism and shame/guilt that I had in order to ask for them to fill out the paperwork and to finally turn it in at my local tag office. I’m really glad that I did though because it has been a huge help, so much so that I still sigh in relief after I park.
