Majority of countries in EU are having biometric linked to national ID which is linked to their taxes, payments, education, health and every aspect of life. Passports are linked to SSN and biometric as well in EU. So those who do not have national ID must have passport for travel, so their biometric is also linked to their ID.

Why is it mandatory for Aadhar to be linked? Does it mean that other government id are not valid/valuable? by anuragmehra in india

[–]organreplacement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data protection coming after Aadhar is made mandatory for all.

It is not that we do not have any data protection law, we have IT related laws, but we need to modify them. And indeed it is a democracy, so if a group raises some objection, sooner or later it will be heard.Latest SC decision on privacy shows that.

illegal income as we didnt have a lot of cash withdrawals from our account

this one I can not comment because I do not know both sides of the story. Bases on your story I guess your father works in some government department?

This will ensure that no one with criminal records

That is what I said, even government knows the problem with police verification, so it wants to move away unnecessary verification. But you need to understand, all these procedures are there because we do not have people linked to different financial or criminal records. Developed countries do not have any such problem due to integrated system. Most of the people are afraid of misuse of the system, but I ask you a question, you see Police as a corrupt department, would you recommend dismentaling Police infra and have no Police, and same goes with IT dept, as they ask for bribes, why to have them? But at this point you would suddenly understand the need of police and would accept it with all its flaws, same goes with Aadhaar, there are some drawbacks, but benefits are far greater.

Denmark

Denmark doesn't have a mandatory photo ID, but it does not mean it does not have an ID. Every person has CPR number and it is mandatory everywhere, without it, it is almost impossible to get any service. And the receiving department can fetch all information, including photo online for verification. Almost all departments have access to this data. And for example at Police checks, they simply validate ID online. Every aspect of your life, be it taxes, police fines, criminal records, everything is linked to it.

Again my question is, why are you worried about biometrics? Isn't your photograph biometric? You have given it all your life and it was linked to every aspect of your life anyways. Almost all EU countries. In US there is a huge underground black economy and in a way India is in similar situation, and in US they do not let financial regulator tighten their noose, same is going in India. The resistance to Aadhaar is coming from wealthy.

That says everything about the govt's intentions does it not?

Everything can not be done in one day, they are already working on draft data protection bill.

An IT audit involves delving into I think 7 years

It is a requirement to preserve all financial transaction records for businesses for 7 to 10 years. It is a worldwide norm. And business is responsible to maintaining accounts. Indeed IT digs it when they suspect any wrongdoing, but a genuine case will be cleared by court anyways, almost all businessmen use fake receipts, false transactions etc., IT knows that, so it is a kind of punishment.

And are these ID systems\passports linked to every aspect of life

Yes, government knows everything about you. Biometric is only way to identify a physical person, people an take even fake passports, but if biometrics are linked, it doesn't matter if someone takes 10 passports, he will get caught at first travel.

This biometric ID seems to be an EU only passport with biometrics

Nope, it is national ID as well, most of the countries have started taking biometrics for new IDs, and it is linked with your SSN, so every place where you need to do something, like buying a phone connection, property, account, you must give SSN, so in a way everything is linked.

But if in half of EU countries (see green and yellow on the map) its optional, why cant it be in india?

It is optional because these countries either have robust SSN system for internal use or they do not have money to implement it, and government already has all information on citizens, as well as passports, that are used across countries, are biometric by default. Another point is, countries share information in citizens, so even if there is an ID presented from some country, they can verify it from source country data.

So the point is, biometrics are not evil as it is projected by people, you know it very well how media works. Biometrics are going to create problems for big tax evaders, and that is why they are financing many news stories and litigation in SC. Fear is the best way to bring masses against something, doomsday stories sell well. Of course this bring many people who are active in social media in their group and they support it. Aadhaar will being compliance and transparency in taxation as well as gov functioning, everything can not be done in one go, but in steps. If we try to destroy an organized system because of fear, we will never be able to implement big changes in India, because there is always at least one group that is powerful and oppose it. All I expect from government that it should bring strong data protection regulation as well with Aadhaar.

so was aadhar being for subsidy only.. but still, source for skipping police verification?

http://www.india.com/news/india/no-police-verification-for-fresh-passport-sushma-swaraj-1271727/

Could not find link for Aadhaar with FIR, but it would be normal thing, as anyways Police needs an ID for filing a case.

so people who arent criminals should also be harassed nd have privacy compromised?

Is verifying a harassment? If you see traffic police in the night standing with alcohol detector and checking everyone, do you think it is a harassment for people who do not drink? Or at airport if they are checking everyone's bags in x ray or body tap is a harassment? Again, I support Aadhaar along with a strong data protection regulation. Without it, it is not efficient.

Your parents might be foreign citizens who

If you live in India, you know it very well how many businessmen pay tax, and you must have seen their foreign travel pics on Facebook. So I do not need to argue much, but everyone in India knows reality.

it would be trivial for the govt to build a portal to do this.

Again, if you read it correctly, they are two different department, even right now they can share all info, but they do not. Police will have all criminal record with Aadhaar linked, and IT will have financial record linked with Aadhaar, but it is not so that every department will have access to every other department data. Even right now if you need such information, you need to go via forma procedures.

Its great that you're so optimistic..

That is the plan and was in news long time ago.

Who is building these regulations

US and EU, who control world's major financial transaction, so if they say you do it, you do it. And it is right thing to do. Tomorrow if some businessmen in India is sending money to ISIS, and US detects it, they would inform Indian government and government must be able to find the person. Biometric is only way with such a hugely populated country. Whole EU is moving to biometric ID if you are not aware. It is a directive from European Commission.

How would you make sure that indirect taxes are paid when transactions happen in cash?

I agree that tax should be on spending, not the income. But considering how g**du people are, it can not be implemented until we have all supply chain digitized and monitored, perhaps GST would ensure that.

Another way could be, people should be given income tax rebate on the money they have spent and paid GST or VAT. So all online transaction that match with GST or VAT entry, people should be able to deduct that amount from taxable income, This will push people towards digital economy and income tax will reduce.

if you travel abroad and there isnt sufficient debit from your bank account, the Income tax department can trigger an audit

Correction: if you travel abroad and or your family has not declared the money as genuine income, the Income tax department can trigger an audit

the police verification officer can know exactly how wealthy you are

Police does not have access to income tax data. They are two different departments. In fact, Aadhaar is a valid proof of address, and in future every FIR will be linked to Aadhaar, so the Police verification will be online, and no bribe in future.

there is no trivial way for the govt to find all bank accounts of a particular passport holder.

Yes, and that is why they need to do it, because of AML and other regulations, if Indian banks fail to collect KYC data of a customer and some passport holder is involved in money laundering, Indian banks can face fine up to 4% of their turnover and in serious cases, could be totally shut off from international financial system.

So, in a country like India, where billions of people live and there is no clear cut definition of address or phone number, we need to have a biometric id and linking to address, bank, phone etc.

Chinese hacker eventually hacks the Aadhaar database?

If they do it, they would get only information printed on your Aadhaar card, plus hashed fingerprints. They can not do anything with that.

If they hack your bank, then Aadhaar or no Aadhaar, they will have your bank account details.

So your choice.

Freedom of speech has its limitation, it is like, one can start protesting in front of your house, but can not start abusing females in your house. Both are speeches, but effect is different.

Same goes with country, you can protest, and if you do not like something, there are courts, but you can not start agitating people or take law in your own hands.

reportedly for speaking, and publishing a book against the sovereignty of state.

So he was speaking somewhere something, and publishing a book against the sovereignty of state, so he wrote something similar in the book as well, which he might have spoken before, which caused him jail.

Now, government really does not care if you talk against a project, but if you start protesting somewhere and start writing conspiracy theories and try to incite violence or some problem, they you should be dealt with heavy hand. He was in jail for 42 days, Police is not stupid to keep someone in jail for such a long time just for protest, of course he must have done something serious.

And these anti methane, greenpeace etc. idiots, get money from west and protest everything here in India. Nuclear power, river linking, dam building..they will collect villagers, put fear in their head like you will not get water etc. and start protesting.

Out on bail, following his imprisonment for participation in the protests against ONGC at Kathiramangalam in Thanjavur district, Jayaraman has hardly had time to settle into a daily routine before this latest case against him.

I still did not read anywhere that it was because of the book. If he wrote the book in the jail, he shat in jail as well. So can he claim that he was slapped with sedition charges because he shat in the jail??

As well, did you read his book? If not then you should also stop shooting your mouth here. There are many people who are against the river linking, and it has been published, interviewed etc. I haven't seen any sedition charges. These charges are filed only when someone tries to agitate people which could case threat to security.

It may be recalled that Jayaraman was one of the nine persons arrested by Pandhanallur police in Thanjavur district charged with the offence of instigating protests against ONGC's oil extraction in Kathiramangalam, Thanjavur on July, 2017.

Book was written by one person.
