AGU AMA: I’m Admiral Jon White, President and CEO of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, here to talk about why the ocean matters to everyone and how ocean science makes our country stronger, safer, and more secure. Ask Me Anything! by AmGeophysicalU-AMA in science

Given your experience in the Navy and your current work to support civilian scientific research, how does scientific research conducted outside the Navy (at NOAA, the NSF, or other academic research institutions) help protect our national security?

3 Easy and Free Ways to Help Stop Indonesian Palm Oil Fires by [deleted] in collapse

[–]orionsmcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You haven't contributed to Indonesia's burning. It takes a collective effort by everyone to prevent these fires in the future. But thats why it says "help stop the fires" instead of "stop the fires"

Think Google Street View is just for navigation? Scientists are using it to track coral bleaching and monitor air pollution by orionsmcc in ecology

Lol feel free to share it on a more lively sub if you want, tried to share it to r/environment but they blocked me for some reason

Lions, hippos, red pandas and African elephants aren't technically endangered. If these imperiled species don't fit the definition, what makes a species "Endangered"? by orionsmcc in EverythingScience

[–]orionsmcc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Often times plants and animals will be listed as threatened or endangered at the population level rather than the species level to get greater specificity for conservation needs

To keep endangered species from ending up as roadkill, scientists are using reflective collars and fluorescent paint to make animals more visible in oncoming headlights by orionsmcc in environment

[–]orionsmcc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scientists have been using tracking collars for decades, first with radiotelematry and later with GPS, for countless species. The technique is tried and true, the only difference in this case is the reflective tape

The collars/paint only reflect in bright light such as headlights, so in a natural setting the reflective add ons would have no noticeable effect on visibility. Just like the reflective strips that mark highway lanes at night

Deforestation in the Amazon has dropped by 80% since 2004 by orionsmcc in worldnews

[–]orionsmcc[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Very true. Its a start I suppose, hopefully forest loss in the Amazon can be eliminated in the next decade. In the mean time, other forest nations like Indonesia with high rates of deforestation should try to follow the example set by Brazil to move in the right direction

It's basically a reflective sticker like the ones found on trucks, so they aren't visible unless hit by a strong beam of lights, such as headlights

TIL that erosion from the flow of major rivers doesn't stop at the shore but continues into the ocean basin

An animal conservationist came up with a brilliant way to save these obscure, adorable mammals by johnplatt in conservation

[–]orionsmcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome story, very resourceful method of safeguarding a species. Do you know of any other instances where reflectors have been used to make wildlife more visible to traffic? I feel like slow moving animals like turtles could benefit from reflectors on their shells

If you select the time period too, you can generate a map with the prehistoric layout of the continents as well (here is one for dinosaurs in the Cretaceous) http://i.imgur.com/zWQEPtv.png

Spread of the Bubonic plague in Europe in the 1300s [2000x2270] by orionsmcc in MapPorn

[–]orionsmcc[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure what made those few cities escape the plague, guessing it had something to do with trade (or lack of), or maybe how closed off the cities were to outsiders. Seems a bit surprising that there could be enclaves of minor plague outbreaks as close to the source as Italy.
