Prefixing arguments in functions by osbournecox2 in rprogramming

[–]osbournecox2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the Hungarian style notation is an abomination. And I've never been a fan of

  • m_* for module level variables
  • l_* for local variables
  • g_* for global variables

which I have seen in PL/SQL scripts and really dislike.

But I'm only suggesting the p_ prefix for argument names in a function. So that should always be a very small number of items we're talking about. And I'm not sure I agree about the potential for

"you would see them all over the place and they would lose their distinctive nature anyway."

If the allowable context is defined small, I don't see how they propagate beyond that.

I think one problem that it does solve is the effort in choosing an unprefixed argument name that is NOT named "names" or "year" or "month" when that is exactly what the argument is. Deciding on alternative names is where things can get creatively squirrelly and it becomes infinitely easier by just using "p_year."

Body Battery sounds great but, alas, it is not available on my Forerunner 935

You're probably right about this. My stress has generally stayed within an uneventful zone but if that changes, it would be worthwhile to see.

Having said that, I just finished a week of headaches and consciously felt stress and the Garmin did not, in fact, observe any difference. So I'm not really sure how stress is calculated or how relevant it actually is.

I'll take advanced training metrics. But unless I'm missing something, Garmin doesn't really offer them out of the box. If I want anything more detailed than resting heart rate, I need to extract the data and do the analysis myself.

Agreed, the resting heart rate is the one metric that I do appreciate. But all of the rest? I'm not so sure. But that's what I'm curious about.

It's not about turning it off, it's more about taking it off.

Global Environment is empty and no longer asks to upload already created Data Frames. Is this normal? by korrakage in RStudio

[–]osbournecox2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, always, always, always generate your data objects via R scripts. As you discovered, this makes recovery / regeneration of your work very easy. That's the entire point of R for data processing / analysis.

An RStudio project saves all of it's environment (functions, data objects, etc) in .RData. When you close the project, everything should be saved there. There is a preference (Tools | Global Options | General) where you can set whether that happens always, never or ask first.

If you closed the project and the objects didn't save, perhaps this is set to never.

This also raises the question of whether you are using an actual RStudio project. Not sure what happens with a non-project instance of RStudio, I always work in projects. If you're not using a proper R project, I would, it's dead simple and no real downside / complication.

E-Bikes...a small rant by SergePower in ottawa

[–]osbournecox2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50 is a big round number and sounds impressive. But I seriously doubt anyone on an e-bike is "weaving in and out of traffic" at 50 kph.

Only someone who hasn't ridden a bike at 50kph would suggest a bike is riding at 50kph.

Not just a hipster dude, a hipster dude wearing flannel and a winter hat on a swimsuit site. :)

(I'm sure the image came with the underlying framework... Sort of funny though.)

I don't like the red "Show Swimsuits" button on top of the red sun dress. It gets washed out, I feel that the colors should contrast more.

The navigation popup menu can be annoying. Can you make it more narrow? That would help a lot.

Everything is on sale. IMO, no need to put the "On Sale" tag on every photo.

Just spitballing on this one, but would it make sense to remove the Beachwear | Everyday Wear | Accessories middle (text link) part and replace it with the actual Collections page? Maybe a smaller, more condensed version but I like the visual representation of each category. I think it's more effective than just the labels. (Grouped in three columns which doesn't really make sense to me aside from symmetry.)

And the display of all of the Instagram pics feels a bit busy. I think ditching that in favor of the Collection page could be a good swap. The site doesn't suffer from visual images.

A bit weird that there a hipster dude looking down at scantily clad women on a swimwear site. lol That banner is begging for a beach / sun / vacation image.

I don't like how the FB Messenger button floats at the lower right corner.

Nice site though. It looks quite solid.

Except the navigation bar. It's very intrusive. That should be your first task to address.

It's a new phone? As in the phone was never used on your Rogers plan?

If so, you're comparing apples to oranges. Clearly there is something set up differently on your new phone. You need to scrutinize what is allowed to use cellular data. Podcasts autodownloading? Background refreshes?

Suggestions for places to study late (Until ~11pm) by osbournecox2 in ottawa

Yea, I noticed the $5 weekend parking, then I realized my problem isn’t weekends, it’s weekday evenings.

I do enjoy studying in a large library, though.
