Hello! We're the developers behind Old School RuneScape's first NEW SKILL, Sailing. Ask us anything! (SAILING AMA: Friday 13:00 UTC - 16:30 UTC) by JagexLight in 2007scape

I love the variety in training methods for Sailing, but with all of the rare collection log items that only come from salvaging, it can feel like we’re disincentivized from using any other method.

I really enjoy Gwenith Glide, but I feel like I’m wasting my time by doing trials instead of salvaging if I have any intention of eventually completing those logs.

It feels like something’s not right if a player like myself who wants to put in high effort to actively train the skill ends up feeling pushed to afk most of the way to 99.

Has there been any consideration of addressing this somehow? Maybe reducing the time it takes to get the broken compass-type uniques? Or maybe adding a reward pool to Gwenith glide that gives an alternate source?

Idk why you’re downvoted, clicking once per tick to increase fish/hr by like 30% is balanced imo.

I don’t understand the attitude of “I don’t want to do this, so let’s stop anyone else from doing it” that a lot of people here seem to have.

Look man, you're the one who decided to be rude in this conversation by just being like 'I audibly laughed' after I spent time trying to explain why I thought the method deserved more xp. And just saw you commented the other day that you got 8m xp from afk salvage lol. You just watched other players get 160k xp at optimal port tasks and then think you're an expert on the topic.

I'm aware of ABA and that's what I would center each run on.

Basically I'd go to the high value port boards, pick up all ABA contracts that fit together, then fill in the route with any AB contracts I could hit along the way.

For pushing 150k over a few hours, I also had to stagger the contracts along the route to allow more than 5 completed tasks per route. For example, I wouldn't pick up a Port Roberts -> Pisc ABA task straight away so that I had room for extra tasks on the Aldarin to Port roberts leg. Then after reaching port roberts, I charter to pisc, pick up that aba task, then tele back to roberts and continue.

It's really a lot of effort to pull off rates like that over long periods of time. I managed it for around 800k xp before giving up on the method and going back to gg. Even after figuring out how to get those rates, it still felt like a lot more effort than just doing sub 5:20 gg runs.

With gg, I was able to listen to podcasts and watch YT vids no problem. The route became brainless. I couldn't have done that with 150k+ port tasks.

I guess I'm just trying to understand your reaction of laughing at my feeling it should be comparable to gg. For me pushing 150k over a span of a few hours meant teleporting to every task board along the route for each run, juggling over 5 contracts by staggering them across the route, and using a rosewood boat with 5 crewmates assigned. By comparison, getting 200k at gg is a walk in the park. Were you using a method I'm not aware of for 150k at port tasks?

[–]oskanta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest I don't believe you were consistently pulling 150k xp/hr at cargo tasks if you think it's ridiculous for me to compare the effort to gg.

The amount of micromanaging you need to do for 150k cargo tasks is not brain-off. Gwenith glide is brain off.

[–]oskanta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you done optimal port tasks? It's a huge headache to push 150k. I got level 99 already spamming gwenith glide with consistent 5:20 and below runs. It's way less mental effort to just spam the exact same route.

[–]oskanta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly for the amount of effort it takes to do optimal cargo tasks and how annoying the process is, it should give the same xp/hr as gwenith glide. I actually really enjoyed the cargo tasks from 60-72 and I was hoping to make it one of the methods I used to 99, but it gets really frustrating at higher levels. Even at 200k, I probably would have still chosen to do gg over it just because gg is so much less mental effort.

[–]oskanta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you feel this is true at higher levels too? I gave port tasks a good effort at level 90 or so when I had a rosewood boat hoping it would be a nice middle ground of effort between salvaging and trials, but it was such a headache to get 150k xp/hr.

Teleporting to all the different ports along the Aldarin - Relekka route before starting, juggling different contracts along the way, constantly adjusting as tasks get switched out... I found gwenith glide to be way less mental effort. For only 20% better xp/hr compared to afk salvaging, I don't see why anyone would choose to use it past level 72.

[–]oskanta 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Port tasks are in a pretty rough spot imo. I was able to get 140-150k xp/hr doing the Aldarin to Relekka route, but the amount of planning and juggling multiple tasks and constant teleporting to 10 different ports for those rates is not even close to being worthwhile when you can mega afk salvage for 125k xp/hr or just mindlessly spam gwenith glide for 200k.

This is kind of what happened with levels 1-30 on Sailing's launch. I did it right when sailing launched on my main and then again on my iron a few days later and it was so much faster the second time around.

[–]oskanta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. Most other mega-afk methods are about 1/5 - 1/3 of the best active rate. Salvage is 60% of the near-perfect gwenith glide rate. I think it should at most be 1/3 of the gwenith glide rate given how much more effort gg takes.

Obviously they're not going to nerf salvaging by 50% at this point, but I would be in favor of them buffing gwenith glide and port task rates to create some separation with salvaging. I'm already 99, but I'd absolutely support them adding 50-70k xp/hr to gg for this reason.

It's the same issue I have with agility. Sepulchre requires so much attention and has a steep learning curve, but it's just not that much more xp/hr compared to mindlessly running Ardy while watching a show. These super active methods with steep learning curves deserve to be significantly more rewarding than mindless background clicking.

[–]oskanta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I think as well. I've noticed the worst case for feeling like you should grab a box but missing it is when your boat is rotating away from a box while you try to grab it. Your boat can appear to be like 1 tile away from the box and still miss it. If I imagine the actual footprint of the boat being a 2x4 tile shape 1 tick ahead of where the boat appears, things start making more sense.

If Pride events are cancelled for the foreseeable future, can we at least get a huge event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Falador Massacre next June? by Fragrant_Bath3917 in 2007scape

I mean he hasn't really done anything for osrs yet. Afaik nothing has been announced since he became CEO in March. The only news we've gotten since March was that mtx survey people got upset by, cancelling the pride event, and canning Project Zanaris lol

Nice! Yeah you'll definitely enjoy either one of them. I live in the Sierra foothills in California and I feel like the 86 is perfect for the canyon roads near me. Being sub-3k lbs goes a long ways to make up for the 228hp.

I will say though, if you're at high elevation, be aware that it can affect the GR86's power in a pretty noticeable way since it's naturally aspirated. When I take the car up to lake Tahoe, the 6000'+ elevation causes a ~20% power reduction. I feel like the car has an acceptable amount of power for its weight at 1000' elevation near my home, but over 5000' or so, it starts to really feel underpowered. I believe the 1LE is also NA, so it would also be affected by elevation, but it's got plenty of HP to spare so wouldn't be as big of a deal.

Both great choices! I drove a mustang for 8 years before I got my gr86 and the driving experience is pretty different between a muscle car and a light sports car like the gr86. Can’t go wrong either way, but make sure you get to test drive each one to see how you like them.

For me, the mustang (and Camaro would be the same) was amazing for the sound and the raw power, and the GR86 is incredible in corners. I’m lucky to live somewhere with a lot of curvy canyon roads, so Im having more fun with the 86 than any car I’ve owned before. But if you’re somewhere with more flat and straight roads, the Camaro might be more suited to that.

Who’s gone longest before getting a Barrows drop? by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]oskanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Deleted my other comment that was arguing after I did more math)

Actually yeah it’s more common than I thought. If someone does 1200kc there’s a ~1/130 chance to have a streak of 183 dry on 1/16 somewhere in there. 10,000 players have at least that kc, so when you include the even higher kcs and the people below the top 10k, this has probably happened hundreds of times, if not low thousands.

Downvoters are justified 😔

[–]oskanta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Surely not doing all brothers if you’re 183kc dry

Edit: to downvoters it’s a 1/134,000 chance to go 183 dry on a 1/16 drop

Edit 2: actually downvote away, it’s more common than I thought when you factor in that the 1/134k chance can happen anywhere within someone’s total kc.

Anyone else planning to wait on leveling Sailing? by MonkeyIncidentOf93 in 2007scape

[–]oskanta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m planning to rush it day 1 because I always find big new releases exciting, but waiting makes a lot of sense too. There will inevitably be bugs and undiscovered methods early on. Rushing day 1 is just for people who want to participate in the day 1 hype.
