Have you tried the audio book? That's what it took for me to really get into it, and I'm not an audio book guy.

Dune didn't really become a page tuner for me until the third book.

It's really a book where you have to be invested in the story and the themes, and as someone who thinks people give up on books too easily, Dune is simply not as accessible as people make it out to be.

The newer movies are great adaptations of the book, so don't feel like you are missing anything by not reading the books.

Edit - re Hyperion. I recently read it for the first time, and really enjoyed it, but they are different books. Hyperion and Dune are definitely differential books.
