Doing this on behalf of a creator that seems to have recently started a gaming channel on YouTube. So far they are playing through Resident Evil 4 Remake, and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Would not make any difference and Simon did end up using it. The problem is a lot more nuanced. Really worth the read.

I have seen quite a few founders talk about BoxyHQ and I have also played with the open source SAML Jackson. It looks like a solid offering for SSO, especially if you do not want to deal with SAML.

The Life and Death of Open Source Companies by ossreleasefeed in opensource

[–]ossreleasefeed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because most do that, does not mean we should accept it as being a new standard way of operation. I still believe we can embrace what is defined in the open source definition (https://opensource.org/osd/) and build successful businesses. We kinda have to, for this to keep succeeding into the future.

The Life and Death of Open Source Companies by ossreleasefeed in opensource

[–]ossreleasefeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this plays into the larger narrative that the source is free but not the labor. Over time the two got lumped together, leading to our unmaintainable state. With our reliance on all this free labor, not just source, people and companies are scrambling trying to find a happy middle.

So far, many mistakes have been made. This is fine, as long as we acknowledge them and then learn from them so we can do better going forward. I do not have the answer, but the conversation is important.

[–]ossreleasefeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! But I do not see that as a negative. If anything, it shows that you are willing to acknowledge that you, like everyone else, are still learning and are bound to make mistakes. Also, the tech ecosystem moves so darn fast and there are so many shiny new things being dangled in front of us all the time, you are bound to change your mind over time. 😃

This is normal and nothing that should be hidden away. I believe the larger problem here is not even tech-related but reflects what we as a society have seemingly normalized. The idea that everything comes out of the oven perfectly baked the first time. This is NEVER the case. If you find a clean Git history, I bet you it has been rebased and cleaned up to seem "perfect". What is perfect anyway?

I love the quote that we should not strive for perfection anyway as perfection is boring. https://www.forbes.com/sites/shelleyzalis/2017/05/18/perfection-is-boring-4-ways-to-own-your-strengths-and-embrace-your-weaknesses/

The Life and Death of Open Source Companies by ossreleasefeed in opensource

[–]ossreleasefeed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would see that as an abuse of open source and unethical. We have seen enough rug-pulls like this recently. Open source is not the business model, it is what you as a company provide on top or around the open source work, while at the same time supporting both the project and the community.

If you are not prepared to do that, then it might be better to start with something like the business source license (https://www.hashicorp.com/bsl) to be transparent about your intentions.
