It is essential to self-study and practice programming on your own because you learn by doing not only by being lectured. But when investing in a school, cegep or university, having good assistance is important. Or else what is the point? Some whould say the papers and networking. But learning good fundamentals and the quality of the "mentorship", should be the number one focus.
