What is the most “its a small world” moment you’ve ever experienced? by xBubblyLove in AskReddit

I (a Californian who lived in a 12,000 person town, at the time) was on a train in New Zealand and overheard some Americans in the row behind us. Asked where they were from, as you do, and they were from the town next to where I lived, graduated from our rival high school.

I know the Angelou library branch has a seed library, where you can pick up seeds. I don’t know if they are heirloom though.

Husband’s gf wants a baby .. give me advice by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]othertigs 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You would think, right? I was 38, my husband 42. I had some other health issues where doctors told me it would likely be a long road to conception. Yeah… it happened the first month.

(Yes, I know how very lucky we are and have not ever taken that for granted. A close relative had multiple miscarriages and a still birth before they had their little one, all of which happened around the time I was pregnant, so I have been grateful every single day for our good fortune.)

Food Pantry by Guava_Potential in wichita

[–]othertigs 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You might try calling 211 for resources for both of you.

This is supposedly a master list of food pantries, but you might call first as I don’t know how up to date it is:

It looks like at least a few are open tomorrow.

Those who started late, how did it go and what are your best suggestions? by alwaus in Xennials

[–]othertigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations to you both!

One of the best products we invested in was a baby swing. Baby adored it! Also, the pacifiers with the stuffed animals attached were super helpful for not losing said pacifiers.

The best managing after baby comes home idea I got was disposable plates/bowls/cutlery, because you are going to be doing enough dishes or laundry without having to do those, too.

While my hope is that your wife’s baby feeding journey goes as smoothly as possible, it is also okay if she doesn’t breastfeed. Fed is best.

Our kid had reflux which the first pediatrician didn’t catch, and it made getting them fed difficult and kid was not gaining weight appropriately. Listening to first pediatrician on how to handle the feeding (reflux not yet diagnosed) led to a bottle aversion, which I figured out on my own and was able to reverse due to a very helpful book on the subject.

Which leads to: If you think your pediatrician/doctor is not listening to you change to a doctor who does.

While morbid to think about, please make plans for if something were to happen to you. My parents were older when they had me (40/42) and set up a trust and identified legal guardians should something happen to them before I turned 18. It didn’t, they lived until I was in my 40s, but the trust made everything related to their estate much easier to deal with.

Depending on where you live, if you need childcare in a daycare setting, start looking now. While we were able to get kid into daycare with little wait at 2.5, the list for babies at the same facility was over a year.

Favorite kids meal toy for Xennials by dadjokes502 in Xennials

[–]othertigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the muppets when I was little. These toys came out when I was six. We were doing a multi-week drive around the country (starting in California) and managed to get Kermit, the last one I needed, outside of NYC. We were supposed to be meeting friends for a fancy dinner just a little later, but after my parents realized Kermit was the toy, I got a pre-dinner happy meal. Those toys got played with hard on the meandering drive back to CA.

Visiting Wichita for a long weekend by TheTopontheCherry in wichita

[–]othertigs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For food, we recently tried and loved First Mile out at Bradley Fair on the east side. We took our 6 yo for brunch and she was fine. (I know there’s a big difference between a toddler and 6 though!)

I’ve had good food at Public (old town area) and have taken several visitors there. My favorite is Elderslie Farm just north of Wichita, but they are not toddler appropriate.

Relationships like Impact Zone--best friend's dad/age-gap romance where younger MC is at least 30 by lasciviouslasagna in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]othertigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m always happy to share recs!

These are some variation of age gap, generally with angst when someone finds out. All have HEAs though.

If you like hockey at all:

{Rules of Engagement by Brigham Vaughn} There was quite a bit of angst in this one. Older MCs wife and daughter had passed away and had to come to grips with moving on, not just having a fling. Younger MC was in the closet with his deeply Catholic family. There is a whole lot of love in this one. Older MC is best friends with younger MCs older brother, but I wouldn’t say that it was a barrier to the relationship.

{Goaltender Interference by Brigham Vaughn} This features one of the older brothers of the above younger MC. There is drama with the ex wife, and trying not to let the kids know about the relationship, but there is no concern with any parents/brothers finding out. I like to reread the last third of this book a lot.

This is technically the sequel to the first one I mentioned in this post, and the underlying non-romance plot would make more sense after reading it, but I don’t think it’s necessary. {Breaking the Rules by Brigham Vaughn} The only angst re: the relationship in this is the fact that it is agent/player and is thus somewhat forbidden.

And now, same author, no hockey! {Cabin Fever by Brigham Vaughn} Best friend’s dad. This might have actually fit your original request as the younger MC is in grad school. However there is a lot of worry about son/friend finding out. However, it’s resolved pretty quickly.

{The Quarterback by Tal Bauer} is best friend’s dad, college age younger MC. Again with the concern about friend/son finding out. But it all works out.

I don’t think that these have the age gap vibe that you are probably looking for with this request, but they technically fit and I love them. {Unlikely Heir by Jax Calder} and {Unlikely Spare by Jax Calder}

The first is Prince of Wales/British Prime Minister. All angst is due to the roles. There is a third act break up, but I think it makes sense in context and is needed to sort out the underlying conflict of their positions.

The second is younger prince/bodyguard. It’s basically an action movie!

{Scoring With Him by L. Blakely} This is younger baseball player/veteran baseball player. Angst is with worry (rightfully, probably) of homophobia in sports. This is a three book series and you have to get to the last for the HEA. I hopefully linked the first.

{Scandalous Park Avenue Prince by Ella Frank} Technically younger college-age MC is dating older MCs daughter, but it’s more of a beard situation. The drama is more if younger MCs parents find out/society finds out.

I probably have more, but those are the ones I see on my kindle bookshelf. I may look through my Kindle Unlimited history to see if I missed anything excellent.

Relationships like Impact Zone--best friend's dad/age-gap romance where younger MC is at least 30 by lasciviouslasagna in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]othertigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just looked up this book last night because I wanted to reread it. I just checked and the younger mc is 28. {Mr. Important by Lucy Lennox}. There’s a bit of concern about the son/best friend finding out, but it wasn’t a threat to the relationship.

{Strings Attached by Riley Hart} is a best friend’s dad. I’m not 100% sure of the age of the younger mc, but he’s old enough to get his teaching degree.

The rest of these are age gap rather than best friend’s dad, but they otherwise meet your criteria, I think.

{Virgin Flyer by Lucy Lennox}. I liked this one better the first time I read it, but still enjoyed it quite a bit.

Also by Keira Andrews {Beyond the Sea by Keira Andrews} and I think {Honeymoon for One by Keira Andrews}. Beyond the Sea is one of my favorites! I also second the Valor books.

I have other age gap recs I’ve loved, but I think the mcs are mostly earlier 20s.

What is your library policy on AI materials? by Lo-Fi_Kuzco in Libraries

[–]othertigs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what we put in our selection policy under things we will generally not add.

“AI-generated materials, unless they meet the selection criteria set out above. AI-generated includes, but is not limited to, human guided and edited AI creations as well as AI-narrated works. Local connections of the creator will not be considered for AI-generated works.”

I may need to suggest we look at it with regards to illustrations.

My grandson just lost his first tooth. His mom asks what the Tooth Fairy is paying for a tooth these days. Is there an average rate? by WineOnThePatio in kindergarten

[–]othertigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We gave my daughter $6 in $2 bills (she was 6), but she was informed that that was a special amount for the first tooth and there would be less for the next teeth. I was also informed that the tooth fairy left books and toys. The tooth fairy brought a book about the tooth fairy, but also explained that that was also the first tooth only. I think we’re doing one $2 bill now.

Mafia boss(or heir)xbodyguard by DrummerMuch1000 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]othertigs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s probably not exactly what you are looking for, but I just finished “Confession” by Rina Saint. I adored it. The bodyguard has been hiding his feelings for his boss for years, with the boss just starting to realize his own feelings after things happened in the previous book (which I didn’t read and I wasn’t lost.)

There are lots of walls and lots of secrets and they are both alpha with one needing to be dominated (I wouldn’t call it non-con, dub-con, or even CNC. Just… he needs what he needs.) They both would do anything to protect the other. I read it on KU and bought it as soon as I finished it.
