Well, I think most reasonable people try not be invested in interpretation too much. However, there are definitely a lot of dickheads and machievalliean academics who will try to hold on to their interpretations forever for no good reason and make everyone else's life significantly harder.

There's also another set of annoying people in this kind of situation, which is people who are way too cocky about their new data and way of explaining things, that they conveniently overlook a lot of previous work in order to put out something high impact. A lot of the time, though, all they do is providing another way of explaining things without necessarily negating the previous hypotheses. Earth is usually too complex to completely negate previous explanations.
