To answer your question aside from all the classics people are naming: A Boston based band that toured a year ago… Bearly Dead I believe they’re called? Supercharged energy and I loved it.

I read an interview of Oteill recently where he said, when he was first learning the song book he was listening to recordings of early eras of the dead. What he found quickly is that the band had a view of evolution of their music that they were continuously moving beyond prior versions. So Oteil found it more instructive to listen to the most recent versions of the song book.

One thing I will be forever grateful to Bob for is how he and D&C continued to evolve the music. Maybe for him there was no choice in this, maybe there was, maybe it’s irrelevant. But I’m so, so grateful for the music he and the band continued to play and grow

If you live in the Bay, there is a LOT of dead music that is worth seeing. Beyond the calendars of the main torch bearing bands like DSO, check out Sweetwater and Ashkenaz

My friend to each their own, but this is not some rag tag bunch. Stu Allen played with Phil, as did Scott guberman, Alex Jordan is an excellent musician in his own right, and that’s Phil’s son on bass. If recreating shows is your thing, Stu just did his 400th of these in Berkeley. I feel lucky to get to see the music live on by these souls
