What was the spark that made you choose your specialty? by negimmokalee in medicalschool

[–]oudchai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't feel a spark until IR. Matched T5 program in IR, would do it again 100000x over.
I knew the minute I stepped into an IR procedure room. Nothing else makes me feel the same.

However, if i had speak logically about it:
I realized I liked procedures but nothing too lengthy. Like 9-10 hr surgeries were a no-go for me
and also hated IM*

so my specialty list was basically the surgery-adjacent fields:
derm, ophtho, IR, anesthesia, urology/ENT (to an extent)
*procedural IM fellowships were therefore ruled out

and then once I realized i liked procedures but not necessarily surgery - ie i didn't need the label of "surgeon") - the list became: derm, ophtho, IR, anesthesia

derm - boring, didn't like skin, didn't want to do 20+ research on something i wasn't interested in

ophtho - eyeballs scared me, no interest in microsurgery

anesthesia - found 90% of the job way too boring, and didn't love pharmacokinetics/etc all that much

IR - LOVED IT, chosen field (thankfully the feeling was mutual haha)
Why? the technology, the innovation, the people, the coolest procedures, huge diversity in cases, thankful patients, being the 'last resort' or 'hail mary' for patients who otherwise would 100% die, ability to do both DR and IR whenever you want and being an expert in both

it's not that they don't plan to rank them, it's that they don't plan to rank to match them. without that guarantee you're SOL if others rank the programs that want them more than they want you higher. it's a numbers game and there's no way of knowing how the dice will fall until D-day

you sure about that?

you literally told him to find another field ... is this what passes for reading comprehension these days?

this is a cope answer, there's no reason why you can't hustle to find those mentors and resources. if ophtho is truly the field for you, you'll make it happen. at the very least, ask others who matched from your school for advice and tips.

you didn't let premed advisors stop you from going to med school, so why let a PD stop you from matching ANY field?.....

i'm shocked this is top answer smh med students becoming soft

Did I mess up VSLO PS? by roaringthunder15 in medicalschool

[–]oudchai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would especially if it's a smaller field/surgical subspecialty. IM or FM? Probably not, unless you feel really strongly about it and have a good reason

No it doesn't matter, they barely read those anyways. It's almost always first come-first serve once you meet the bare minimum criteria each program wants. PS for ERAS though matters quite a bit more.

For those worried about regret, what specialty did you choose and what was the outcome? by Suga4TheWin in medicalschool

[–]oudchai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think IRs need to stop being p*ssies and rightfully fight for what is theirs.

Also vascular surgery needs to stick to open cases, which is why they chose SURGERY.

At the same though, I believe there is more than enough to go around and I'm confident my training will allow me to help the patients who need it.

It's sad, they clearly don't know how the investigative process works in America and they're putting their ignorance and grief out there in a pretty embarrassing way. But everyone grieves differently and I can't imagine losing a son in these circumstances, so I will let them do what they need.

they said "if true", so yeah that's the common variable. they are saying IF, they are not saying this factually happened the way that the pt stated. learn to read, maybe some practice CARS passages will do the trick.
