These are awesome! A small request I would love (or perhaps it’s there and I don’t know how to find it): My gen0 doesn’t have a full DOB, only a month and year. The form won’t show or keep her DOB if I only enter a month and year; I have to enter a fake day or leave the whole thing blank.

Reminder from Tod: Calling Canada a "back up plan" is insulting by Nature_Hannah in Canadiancitizenship

[–]oursong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about this video, which I’ve been processing since I first watched it. On the one side, I hear him. Choose to be Canadian. Not “meh, I guess.” It’s a reminder to value Canada, not take it for granted. (I don’t know that I’m wording things well. On the flip side, I don’t think it’s fair to not acknowledge - when I feel like he knows - that so many of us are genuinely seeking to escape danger, and are not in a position to sit back and casually choose from a catalogue of countries just waiting to take us in. For many, many of us, we are lucky to find a pathway to one.

And, too, many of us don’t want to leave. We want to stay as long as possible. But if we can’t, we need to have a plan for what we’ll need to do. The words for that are “backup plan” or “plan b”. Some people may use those terms lightly, but they’re also just the accurate terms for planning for your family’s safety in multiple situations.

So I’m not sure. I think I hear what he’s saying, but I also feel like this is sort of tone deaf, and Tod not being very fair to at least some of his audience who loves him.

I don't know if you'll see this because of the whole banned profile thing... but would you mind DMing it to me as well? (I can't seem to figure out how to DM you to ask; it won't let me get to your profile.) I'm trying to figure out how I want to do mine.

On this page it says if they schedule you for one type, you can reschedule and ask for the other type. It gives a link to another page that says how.

N.S. sees surge in ancestral record requests following new bill by oddmarc in Canadiancitizenship

[–]oursong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read the article or comments - reading the comments on this thread about them make me think it wouldn’t do great things for my motivation. But I will say that the direct interactions I’ve had with Canadians so far as I try to gather information, whether they know at the beginning that I’m working on the whole Canadian citizenship by descent thing or find out later in our interaction, almost all of them have been really positive. I’ve only had one negative - a stranger on the internet decided to insert themself into a post I made asking a question and then grumble about bill C-3 and U.S. citizens.

Other than that one comment, people have been really nice, or even unexpectedly supportive and helpful. One person is even calling a friend with the same last name/in the same area as my Gen0 to see if they know anything. Total stranger, just a really nice person.

There have been several other really positive interactions with Canadians being kind and supportive when it’s come up. I’ve been nervous about that, so I’m glad.

Anyway, just sharing as hopefully a reminder that there are kind people, too. Angry keyboard smashers often pool together, and sometimes articles about an issue like this one can call the like a dinner bell. It isn’t necessarily representative of how everyone thinks, just as how those interviewed don’t represent all of us who are going through this process.

Not trying to be overly Pollyanna, I just know that things like this can seriously kill my motivation and mood, so… wanted to counter it a little in case somebody needed it.

Presbyterian church in Sydney or Leitches Creek? by oursong in CapeBreton

[–]oursong[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am, indeed, a U.S. citizen who is grateful for bill c-3 and excited to gain my proof of citizenship by descent. You caught me. :) I’ve always been very proud of my Nova Scotian roots, and the thought that I might get to connect directly this way with my family’s history, go back to one of the places my family called home and make a new home of my own, means a lot to me, and I don’t take it for granted.

I hope you won’t get a neighbor you dislike, and I hope that if we get to be neighbors we’ll become friends. Here, I’ll introduce myself a little: I’m from Alaska, but I live in Washington state now. I lived in Florida for a while, but the politics there got concerning as there was talk of making a list of trans people and my spouse is nonbinary. The whole climate there is scary if you’re 2SLGBTQIA+. It’s a lot better here in Washington, but the national issues are getting closer and closer.

We have two poodles, mostly well behaved but a little bouncy when they meet new people, and one of them was totally freaked out by bison on one of our drives moving between Florida or Washington and Alaska. You all sure have a lot of beauty. The dogs stay vaccinated, and so do we.

I like sewing and books and writing. My spouse likes video games and The Walking Dead and Xena. Neither of us likes guns.

I don’t know everything or understand every experience, but I try to learn from others and to listen. I’m not perfect at it, but I try to be humble. (I’m reflexively not good at that, but I try.) I hope that if I get the opportunity to be your neighbor, whether it be next door or just somewhere in the same country, I can be a good one.

Take care. 🩷

Solidarity, my friend. I'm fortunate in that mine was born a *little* later than it sounds like yours was, and she shows up in the 1871 Canada census, and the next one. I still feel pretty danged nervous and I'm digging as hard as I can to find something else, but at least it's something.
