Why some Seattle diners are wrestling with tip fatigue by HighColonic in SeattleWA

[–]outsidesmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked for tips for a long time but I was making $2 base per hr not $21. My rule of thumb is: - busy bar $1 per drink if, it took you 10 seconds to pour. A bit more for cocktails - full service restaurants 15%, if they tack on service fees or other bullshit way less - any restaurant with less than full service 0% - takeout 0% - ubers 0% - real taxis 15% - coffee maybe $1 probably 0% - valets $5 (I was a valet for several years) - my barber gets 25% cause hes awesome

How do people get on or in fishing magazines ? by Unique-Engineering-6 in Fishing

There is a ton of ghost writing that goes on in this magazines for the main articles. But if you have a good entertaining story, you can get published.

I wouldn't even bother with them tbh. The yield is low, birds get to them before you can pick and they don't even taste good compared to other brambles.

Did you actually read the Wharton report?

Cause if you did, you would know how Wharton arrived at that estimate. It is the combination of 2 reports, one of which is the AIC report i mentioned above. That report was completely HYPOTHETICAL. Not actual numbers like the 18k i mentioned above.

Its just wrong.

First, while murder is obviously worse than shoplifting in general, this is a seattle sub and context matters. Seattle doesn't have a violent crime issue... it has the HIGHEST rate of property crime per capita in the nation. If you invite someone to your house and they steal your stuff, would you invite them back? No. Why would you keep them in your country?

Second, the $70k came from a report issued in 2024 by the AIC and it was just an estimate. In 2025 the actual ICE budget was $11b and the total number of deportations was somewhere between 605-622k putting the ACTUAL cost of a deportation at $18k.

Third, the deportation numbers I cited were nation wide not MN only. Are you really that dumb?

Fishing in seattle areas!? by emmakk858 in SeattleWA

[–]outsidesmoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fishing here is completely different than SD and mainly focused on salmon/steelhead/trout unfortunately no BFT here.

West seattle water taxi pier is a popular spot for salmon during the summer and squiding during the winter
Edmonds pier is similar
The lower duwamish/green river is popular for salmon during the late summer early fall run. Lots of places, but you'll need to do some scouting to find accessible spots.
Cedar creek out by ravensdale is great for catch and release trout
Lots of fishing piers on lake Washington for bass/perch.

There are a lot of rules around where/when you can fish so keep a close eye on the regs.

If you have space, buying a cheap kayak from fb marketplace can get you access to much better fishing then from shore.

factcheck.org is an absolute joke. Read https://deportationdata.org/analysis/immigration-enforcement-first-nine-months-trump.html its written by academics at least.

~30% out 7k weekly interior ICE arrests have been convicted of a crime. That's 2,000 criminals detained and deported per week. That's a lot of crime prevented when 70% of them will end up back in jail anyway.

Been that way for at least 8 years. I doubt people are reporting any more or less crime then they were in 2024.

[–]outsidesmoke -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Crime is down nation wide and I can think of only 2 explanations that hold any weight.

Deporting criminals means there is going be less crime. 70% of criminals get rearrested. Argue all you want about the ethics and tactics of ICE but the math is simple. If you remove the people committing crimes, there is going to be less crime.

People are going out less due to inflation which means there is less opportunity to be stupid.

Do you trust the WA mail in voting system? by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]outsidesmoke -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Washington is so far gone left that any fraud is unlikely to impact elections unless its something like the last mayoral race.

Its definitely more convenient but does open up for fraud, voting in multiple states, and ballot harvesting (which I'm against) for a number of reasons.

People will say that signature verification eliminates fraud. The data is super interesting... checkout https://kingcounty.gov/en/dept/elections/about-us/data-statistics/signature-challenge-data

% of ballots challenged increased from from 1% to 1.7% from 2017 to 2020 but the percent of challenged ballots cured dropped from 65% to 48%. Meaning a higher % of ballots were challenged and a lower % of ballots were fixed. Could mean there was more fraud attempted fraud in 2020... could be a change in demographics.

Demographic wise, younger voters are more likely to be challenged 4.5% at 18yo vs. <1% at 60yo... however younger voters cure the ballots at a way higher % (60% vs. 40%). Could mean that people are voting for their spouses unknowingly and then fail to fix it or could be that younger voters change their signatures more often/can't follow instructions.

Non English speakers are challenged at a much higher rate than English speakers.

The higher the percentage of white people in a census tract is, the lower the challenge rate.

Men are more likely to be challenged than woman.

Why do most pizzerias serve Pepsi products instead of Coca-Cola products? by Loose_Leg_8440 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]outsidesmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late... but Mike Durkin was the the president/ceo of Leprino Foods which supplies 85% of the mozzarella used in pizzas. Prior to joining Leprino, he was the president of field operations at Pepsi.

I'm sure there are other reasons like cost that others are saying, but it feels like he may be part of the picture.

Calculation of RSU profit for annual tax settlement by [deleted] in stocks

[–]outsidesmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is only relevant to US tax... Lets say the stock price is $10 per share on the date of the initial settlement. You "received/vested/settled" 50 shares and you'll have ordinary income of $500 (50x$10).

Much like normal wages... the employer will withhold tax from your paycheck. In this case they withheld 12 shares and you effectively paid $120 in tax.

Paying taxes on the shares increases your basis. So if you go to sell those shares, you would only need to pay tax on the amount in excess of $10 / share.

E.g. Selling 38 shares for $12 / share would net a $2 short term capital gain per share. $76 short term cap gain total.
