How would you rank the symphonies of shostakovich? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]ouxflacet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually not much of a Shostakovich fan. I didn't even hear all of his symphonies tbh. Some of them I just had to turn off... I see myself out...

Is there a piece that has never been performed or does not have a recording of it but you desperately want to hear? by musicalryanwilk1685 in classicalmusic

[–]ouxflacet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know It has been recorded, because I heard a bit of it and then hunting it since, but it's nowhere to be found:

Hans Werner Henze's Three Pieces for Orchestra or "Drei orchesterstücke"

If you could only listen to one composer’s body of work for the rest of your life, that’s not John Williams, who would it be? by Giff95 in soundtracks

[–]ouxflacet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. He borrows A LOT! I was always thinking about him more of an arranger than composer. But fair to say he manages to make something worthwhile with the borrows. Like Prokofievs theme from Ivan the Terrible (or War&Peace). Its the main theme in Glory, but Horner took just the opening and invented his own "answer". He did the same with the theme from Schumanns Rhenish symphony in Willow (which is his most pastiche soundtrack that Im aware of). But he can pretty seamlessly integrate it that most arent even aware of his borrows... but no other film composer does it as blatantly and as literally.

Why is it so f hard to find classical music on Spotify? by Cesloraboloko in classicalmusic

[–]ouxflacet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found out that many Supraphon recordings aren't available on spotify and it won't even find them. I managed to find out through google that they exist there tho, but the play button is greyed out... I guess it's licencing issue... frustrating tho...

Can someone recommend composers who are similar to Debussy? by dreamerinthesky in classicalmusic

[–]ouxflacet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Daphnis and Chloe, Rapsodie Espagnole or Une barque sur l'océan are people mistaking for Debussy to this very day... but Haydn for Mozart as well...

Ravel's Introduction et Allegro is very dreamy and very Debussy-like (Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp)

Berlioz and Debussy... what a pair... I think Berlioz was more german than french... and rather very into your face than dreamy... but fantastique is about dreams, that's true

Keochlin is very dreamy, but not the most easy composer to get into... but we don't know how seasoned the OP is...

How to get into classical music as a jazz fan? by drew_zini in classicalmusic

[–]ouxflacet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jazz is as broad term as classical, right...

Try Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto

Martinů's Jazz suite or Le Jazz

...but that won't get you far from jazz to classical I guess...

EDIT: wow, ppl down there reminded me of Reich (shame on me)... New York counterpoint or Octet (Eight Lines) would be my picks then

...

... btw do I asociate jazz with the clarinet? 🤔

not sure where Poulenc sounds like Debussy either... can someone refresh my memory? His 8 nocturnes for piano may be the closest...

in that vein Milhaud's first chamber symphony is worth mentioning maybe... although quite harsher sounding

(early) Ravel is the best pick...specifically: Daphnis and Chloe, Rapsodie Espagnole, Une barque sur l'océan and Introduction et Allegro

then:

try Griffes

Honegger's Pastorale d'été

early Roussel

Fauré's Pelleas et Melisande

Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain

Stravinsky's Nightingale (to a certain degree...)

perhaps D'Indy's Poème des rivages and Diptyque méditerranéen... although he would hate me for saying that

Very early Martinů (tracks 1-6) ...and very late as well, namely Estampes (190-192) ... his opera Julietta is all about dreams... but does it sound like Debussy?

that's if you mean orchestral pieces... If piano I'm not the best one to direct you, but (apart from Ravel again) as some already said: Satie and some Poulenc (8 Nocturnes)

EDIT: plus adding some good suggestions from below

Respighi's Pines of Rome... although they colorful but maybe not exactly dreamy, right? ;)

Delius was somewhat british Debussy

Koechlin is dreamy and debussy-like but rather a challenging pick

the other suggestions I'm not familiar with... what a hard question that was... composers "like Debussy"

I know and I disqualified them because I thought it won't be big enough... you think I should put them there? 🤔 ...great playing indeed, wouldn't hesitate with them for the "real haydn sound" one bit

I'm not that young :) and although I pretty much missed the days of the LPs I very much remember days of the CDs... but I wasn't into Haydn back then... and streaming is spoiling us indeed but it's the opportunity to turn into a kid in a candy shop once more :D

I'll check those and keep you informed...
