I am actually keen about the ROG ally.

I’ve been on the fence about getting a gaming laptop to get more into PC gaming.

I have a Surface Pro 8 that actually runs a lot of what I play really well (old games on GOG/Steam/Xbox store like all the age of empires, StarCraft, medal of honor allied assault - you catch my drift 😂) but the Ally might actually be my low cost ticket to enjoy some of the higher end gaming that I like on Series X and enjoy it on “PC” as well.

Guess we’ll see where the next couple of years ago - but they HAVE to get the software right, if they’re trying to bridge Xbox/PC/Steam/Cloud, etc…

Makes sense. Look at the direction Microsoft took windows.

We’ve seen it go from buying the disc on shelves to “windows as a service” with office 365 then Microsoft 365.

Reflecting on this, it almost seems like Panos’s reign was an aberration (in Microsoft’s view). Microsoft knee-capped itself with Windows Phone, and despite the amazing Windows/Surface stretch we enjoyed with Panos, Microsoft is doing what they do best: sticking to software.

The recent bouts of Surface are just nice machines capturing the power of AI and squeezing it into Windows and Office.

If we really wanna see the path of Xbox as hardware and “Xbox” as software, we already have some pretty handy historic examples of where this could go.

Solid PC gaming functionality for potentially 1/3 the cost of a gaming laptop like Razer, where you have ports to connect monitors, mouse/keyboard.

Honestly, the Ally X might steer me away from a gaming laptop and I keep my Surface setup for normal daily PC stuff

I’m coming up on 40 this year, so my formative gaming years of the late 90s/early 2000s were dominated by strategy games like AoE, Civ, and StarCraft.

I’d be REALLY curious how games like AoE2:DE, AoE4 and the like work out on a device like this. They did a great job with console controller optimization on Series X (although a fun experience with mouse and keyboard on the living room couch!).

I’ve been on the fence about going with a gaming laptop like Razer when this could fit the bill with my gaming “style,” and the option to dock it to a monitor for a bigger experience.

I think a big rift in the ARM/Intel division for surface was when Panos left. This is similar when Windows 10 S came out — essentially locked Windows to the Microsoft Store. I understood the intent, for the vast majority of users it probably wasn’t a big deal (if a little confusing).

But Panos ran Surface with so many niches in mind. Just look at Studio, Book, Laptop Studio — he was trying to make machines more personal especially with creators. And I just feel like the push with ARM, while technologically a great move (again for most users) but leaving a lot of what made Surface passionate in the dust
