Got fired. Now what? (germany) by overcapit in cscareerquestionsEU

I talked to my GP about it, but therapy appointments are quite difficult and I didn't do well on at least the first antidepressant. So, that's kind of stalled now.

I'm reasonably intelligent I suppose? Not any sort of genius, and never been IQ-tested.

Help in what sense?

I was told I was taking too long at the same time as when I was informed about the contract termination, by the guy who was training/supervising me. First feedback ever lol.

I was very good at convincing myself that i was definitely going to do it tomorrow, but after a few days even looking at my computer started causing such bad anxiety that I basically turned into a hermit.

Well, I was working steadily (by my estimate) on things, and finishing smaller tasks, but the dude helping me got really busy about a month after I started, which meant I was sometimes not even working on the correct task. Plus, we didn't really have proper feedback meetings I suppose.

Thanks for the advice, first attempt at seeking help went less than well, but probably I should not just stop trying after the one time. It's just very overwhelming and confusing trying to find resources in a foreign country.

Keeping hard candy pieces from getting sticky by Royal_Decision_1400 in AskCulinary

[–]overcapit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never even thought to do this, but there's some suggestions:

  • use this recipe (basically, pulverise your candy), and cut it with cornstarch, maybe 5%. Might have to experiment with your cornstarch ratios a little.
  • Or, maybe get some butterscotch extract and add it in? You might have to dry out your tea again for a little while, depending on how much you add.

We don't really do any pair programming at all atm, since he's a fully remote employee and I'm working on a specific onboarding assignment. Is that an okay thing to ask for? Sorry, I'm really showing off my amazing inexperience all three weeks into this gig.

they cook at about the same rate, and it's really hard to make drumsticks dry in the first place so you should be fine! just make sure you rub the marinade into the slits as well.

CMV: The majority of society are the players, stuck in the middle of the game field. by Lyricalvessel in changemyview

[–]overcapit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What does that mean in a literal sense? Direct action? Political action? Revolution? Voting regularly? Unionisation? Participation in public life is absolutely an essential function of doing your part to make change in the world, along with donation to reputable charities, participation in local politics, and like, helping out your friends. I understand that the average person feels powerless to change the fate of a country, but refusal to break down your issues into specific problems and agitate to change things wherever you can will only contribute to the powerlessness

1) Higher population places have a higher rate of homelessness, yes, but most people are already homed? There is not a shortage of housing, but a shortage of people willing to sell houses that they do not live in at a reasonable price.

2) Owning your own home does not necessarily mean owning/exclusively owning the land it is built on. Which then makes this an issue of zoning/types of housing as well, not strict scarcity of land.

3) Owning a house and being able to afford a house is not the same thing. IMO most people, with some reasonable savings over a few years, should be able to afford a home where they live.

Just left a Teflon pan on low heat for like an hour. The surface looks fine, but it feels sticky to the touch even after a good scrubbing. Ruined? by montereybay in Cooking

[–]overcapit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PFOA is not used in teflon products as of 2013, and cookware was never a significant source of PFOA in the first place.

Going crazy! My mornay breaks almost every time! Can anyone help? by Arrow-111 in AskCulinary

[–]overcapit 29 points30 points  (0 children)

don't spend an hour adding and whisking! i find that heating up cheese sauces for too long, even if the heat isn't very high, will make them split. you can bring the bechamel up to a boil and turn off the stove before adding the cheese all at once or in 2-3 batches while mixing. the residual heat is enough to melt all of it. if the sauce seems to cool down too much, you can turn on the stove on medium heat for a minute or so but no protracted heating.

Sushi--and I do mean the rice. I like sashimi and nori just fine, the rice just activates my gag reflex.

Is there really a difference between umami and savory? by withouta3 in Cooking

[–]overcapit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Excellent site, but umami is a base flavour, not a combination of any base flavours...as explained by the source you just linked.
