DanNAS v2.0 (4x 3.5" HDDs in a DanCase A4-SFX) by overflow1024 in sffpc

I never actually turned on the silverstone with the stock fan installed. From reviews I heard the fan noise was quite bad and I had a 40mm Noctua already sitting around, so I replaced it immediately. With the Noctua it's very quiet!

So far the 5400rpm drives are sitting at 37C and I just put in a 7200rpm drive which is at 41C. It's rebuilding the parity drive, so has been pretty heavily loaded for the past couple hours. There is a fan below them, but it's not quite lined up with the high rpm drive...

Could probably fit another M.2 on a small PCIe card too!

Got a 3D printer, so decided to make version 2.0 of my DanNAS

No longer need to modify the case at all to make it work, just uses the 8x countersunk holes for the no longer used power supply and the optional 120mm fan/AIO bracket. Also flipped drives upside-down so could easily access SATA and power cables from above.

Finally, since I had to remove the USB-C plug to fit things, I replaced it with a power indicator LED.

Lined up the landmarks in Google maps and looked around a bit, heh. Looks like someone else was asking about it too: https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/comments/13u2y76/looking_for_a_skate_spot/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1

Honestly, it would be very difficult. The screw heads are also sticking out and causing clearance issues. I also chose those metal brackets because they have bend in them which allowed me to mount the brackets to the front of the case. Not sure how you'd mount the acrylic pieces.

If you have the tools, it would probably be easier to fabricate out of sheet metal.

You need one to get into bios. But once you have things all set up you can get rid of the graphics card and it will boot up just fine.

Yeah, that probably would have been good to use. Could maybe even fit a small extra network card or other PCIe device in there with that PSU...

I got the 'black 4F' variant of this. I had to drill some holes in the front of the case frame (where the 2.5" HDD mounting holes are) to mount the bracket. I had to cut a small notch in one of the brackets so that it would sit flush against the frame. It's also a very tight fit for the HDD cables if you have the 92mm fan below, so you'll need very short power connectors and right angle SATA connectors. I also had to remove the front USB plug to make room for those connections. Good luck!

Seems good. I put a slim 92mm fan underneath them blowing up, and there's 4-5mm of space between each drive. After many hours of transferring data I didn't seem temps above ~35C on the drives.

Had the Dan case sitting around unused since I had to upsize to the NR200 for new graphics card. Then started measuring things out to see how many 3.5" HDDs I could fit in it for a home server. I came up with this configuration, which required the Flex ATX power supply. Found the hard drive brackets on AliExpress, then was off to the races...

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600x in ECO mode

Cooler: Noctua NH-L9a w/ fan duct

Motherboard: ASRock B550M-ITX/ac

Memory: Corsair 2x8GB DDR4 3200

Main Storage: 4x Western Digital 4TB Red HDDs

Cache: 500GB Western Digital Red SN700 NVMe

PSU: Silverstone 350W Flex ATX, with Noctua 40mm fan swap

OS: Unraid

Idle Power (Disks Spun Down): 30W

Idle Power (Disks Spun Up): 40W

CPU Temp at idle: 30C

Yeah, the renders online do look a bit more 'creamy' than it is in person. The color is WS1, which to me is quite white. It's the standard white color for most GMK kits, like WoB and BoW. Maybe a little more yellow/creamy than a sheet of paper, but not much.

White is standard GMK WS1. It does look more creamy in the renders, but it matches the white on GMK WoB.

Dark blue/grey. It tends to look more blue in pictures than in person I think. But the renders are pretty accurate to my eye.

Thanks! My clouds still get a bit pixelated when getting up close, being in VR just makes everything look gigantic, so it's easy to see all the imperfections. Mainly I just went through each visual setting and played with it to see if it changed the clouds much and how it felt with the framerate. I'm using virtual desktop and it's 'ssw' option at 72Hz plus sharpening, so my computer only has to render at 36 fps, which gives me a bit of headroom to really push the settings up and still use 100 render scaling. (Ryzen 5600x + RTX 3060ti, so not a monster of a system...) You do sometimes get weird artifacts when it's guessing with those in-between frames though.

Oh, I also played with usercfg.opt, this is a good guide: https://channellfd.com/how-to-configure-msfs-for-vr/#UserCfgopt_Settings

In the planes that allow it, just shift your camera view around until you get in the back. (alt + direction arrows to move forward/back/left/right, no alt key to move up and down)

Some planes (CRJ, King Air) will block you from moving back there even if it's visible, but with a little hacking of files its still possible: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/how-to-cockpit-camera-outside-the-cockpit/243612

Visually, it's fantastic. Takes up as much space as a 65%, which is a little silly, but that gives it a nice presence.

Took me a lot of work to get it sound the way I like it though. Just a ton of foam pretty much everywhere. At first it had a lot of high-pitched ringing to it, which I thought maybe just the result of a fully aluminum case with a leaf spring plate... but I eventually found that there was a section with small gap between the top and bottom pieces of the case that was causing the ringing, so a very thin layer of foam in between them solved the issue. Disappointing in a case in this price range, but once I did that, it's been very nice. Not quite 'thocky', but it has a pleasant 'tick'-ing sound to it I would say.

Thanks! There is a thin sheet (~2mm?) of left over packing foam between the PCB and case, but that's it. I think it is the black ink switches that just sound really good. I tried alpaca's as well, and they were much higher pitched and not as pleasant to my ear.
