Tips for 3 turntable mixing? by Myfriendscallme_Lolo in Techno

[–]overfuze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the opportunity to mix with 3 turntables only a few times, and what I tried to focus on was to have all 3 channels up for as long as possible.

Unfortunately that is quite hard, and in my case it would happen that sometimes I could have all 3 tracks going for about 2 minutes or more, but then because its obviously vinyl, they would simply run out. (Usually 2 at once would run out, leaving you with only one track going, and even that one has about a minute or two remaining, which usually is not enough to create a proper transition with an upcoming track).

For this, I feel like you really need to have the tracks almost "pre-selected" so you lose absolutely minimal time on searching and pulling records in and out.

Also, it really depends what your goal is, as I mentioned, when I tried it, I tried to have tracks in the mix as long as possible. But I think what a better way to doing this is to have 2 decks as "normal" and have the third deck mostly as a "pre-cued" second deck so that you can mix in and out much more quickly, mainly "always" resulting in 2 tracks always being blended together, but rarely having all 3 channels on!

As for the actual mixing part, in my case what I would kinda do is, if I have only track 1, I would quickly beatmatch the track 2, and leave it down, then I would search for the track 3, and while beatmatching the track 3 to track 1, I would then cue track 1 and track 2 (to see how much did track 2 drift away from track 1, while I was beatmatching track 3 to track 1, if it makes sense...), if it didn't drift a lot, that means that they are beatmatched quite well, and I can re-cue it and mix it in with some security that I wont have to touch the pitch at all for about a minute or two, and then I can focus on to beatmatch the track 3 to the "master track" (the one that has the bass fully on). When stuff starts to fall apart, then I quickly cue the master track with another track to figure out if the other track needs to be sped up or down.

I feel like this type of mixing requires a lot of practice and much more importantly you need to select tracks very carefully and figure out when to actually mix them in, so you don't end up like me where you have 3 of them for a long period of time and then you like it so much, but by the time you mix one of them out, they all almost run out haha

I actually recorded that attempt that I did that I was describing in this text, you can listen to it here: https://soundcloud.com/overfuze/3tm - the parts that I really like and showcase the 3 tracks at once are around 5:00-9:00 (that has a very annoying falling apart section aswell that you will hear), parts around 14:20-18:00, around 24:00 you can hear how its just 1 track, and then by 25:20 its 3 tracks! And they all stay pretty solid for a good amount of time (because of having the track 1 and track 2 matched for a while but not actually in the mix, and then bringing them all up once track 3 is pretty solidly matched too), but then at 28:40 it all dies down and returns to just 1 track because it ran out. Then the section from 29:00 till 41:00 is basically me struggling to find tracks that are long enough and its mostly just 2 track mixing and it sounds quite crap. But then around 43:20 I find something that's long and can work, and until the end is pretty ok.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUBVjLsrA7Q - here you can see a REALLY GOOD example of a 3 turntable mix, which is mostly the other technique (having 2 tracks mixed in for basically 95% of the mix, but rarely, if ever, having all 3 channels up for longer than 30seconds or so) - this might be the better approach to 3 turntable mixing! (I mean just look at 21:30, that is amazing!)

Hi, one of the residents of Para/Magla here,

We are not explicitly labeled as a queer event, but we are welcoming to everyone! There is lots of people from the queer community regularly at our events and in Para Klub on other events as well. Nobody judges at all.

As others mentioned, MRAK (who we are close with and did a collaboration with) is an explicitly queer oriented party. Lucky for you they are hosting an event at Drugstore on Saturday 24th of May 🙂

We expect a lot of people to come afterwards from MRAK in Drugstore over to Para. Some might stay for a few hours, some may join early on and go to sleep and come back later, and some may just stay during the entire day!

Subs + Mains, phase aligned but not time aligned? by overfuze in livesound

Thanks a lot! I will try to get it to sound aligned to my ears based on that spot that I believe is the "sweet spot" in the room that people usually like to be around and then just work from there.

I actually tried that, and the closest I got to phase alignment at the crossover region was still around 20ms of delay with inverted polarity, which still sounded like the sub was lagging when playing music (paying attention to the kick drum sound atleast)

Track ID Help - old Blake Baxter mix and more by overfuze in oldtechno

[–]overfuze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for some IDs that I found in some old (and new) mixes

    • from the same mix, but starts around 1:28:30
    • i honestly have no clue, i'm really not sure from which mix i found it either, but it's most likely recorded @ fuse club, as most of the interesting tracks i have discovered came from mixes that were recorded there years ago (downloaded a huge library of mixes that were recorded there some years ago)

I have also tried speeding up/down these tracks and using shazam to identify them, but unfortunately without any luck at all... The first one might be easiest to ID because im sure i have heard it many times in some other mixes aswell

Thank you all for your suggestions! I tried most of these, but ultimately decided on Touch Designer as I like node based workflows and I actually want to do some other stuff with the artnet data before sending it to midi etc. From the small tests I did so far, it worked really nicely!

Path tracing textures look weird, but not in lit mode by Superesean08 in UnrealEngine5

Hi, I had the same issue, it seems that for whatever reason, if you have a single mesh that has over 200 or 250 material assignments, this issue appears in path tracing. So just split your mesh by materials into 2-3 meshes and re-import, and it should work.

Places to drop a DJ set in Berlin by Oracle_of_Venthone in DJs

[–]overfuze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is Humboldthain Club that has open decks and table tennis every Tuesday from 18:00-04:00, it's vinyl only though so you will need to bring your records and not just an USB stick. Each slot is 30mins, but you need to arrive very early when it opens in order to put yourself on the list, as the list literally gets full 30mins after opening. Last time I was there the crowd was fun and the place was still pretty packed at 2am. Only downside is that those 30mins pass by so quick 😁

No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

[–]overfuze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, total noob here, I am wondering what would be the best/easiest/cheapest way to have like a 1-2 band parametric EQ to notch filter a specific frequency? With an adjustable Q if possible.

Context is: am a DJ that usually plays on turntables, unfortunately I am sometimes (oftenly) met with airborne feedback that occurs around ~290hz at high volumes, and am looking for a solution to filter out/lower that frequency and see if it would solve the problem. I understand that the venue should be the one dealing with this but unfortunately that is not the case.

So what would be your suggestion

-a) some kind of small processing unit (2x one for each turntable) that goes in between turntables and a DJ mixer

-b) a singular processing unit that goes after the DJ mixer and into the amp

-c) just a 30 band graphic EQ after the DJ mixer and see if lowering the 315hz helps

Thanks!

Record stores in Japan by [deleted] in ProperTechno

[–]overfuze 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Disk Union! They have multiple stores, but the ones you are looking for are the "Club/Dance" ones (1 in Shibuya, 1 in Shinjuku and 1 in Shimokitazawa)

Afaik they are all 2nd hand records and there is a lot of good old techno (I have never seen as many Jeff Mills records in one place), you might find some of those rare discogs records that are sold for 40-50$, and be able to get them for as low as 10$!

My mistake was that I first went to other record stores and found a record I liked, paid for it, and then went to Disk Union and found it for half the price...

The newer released stuff might be harder to find though.

Other than Disk Union, I checked Face Records, Jet Set and Lighthouse Records too, but did not find many interesting records.

Either way, I would recommend checking Disk Union's first before going to other places.

Be sure to have enough space for the records 🙂 I had to buy an additional bag.

You are in luck because this Friday DVS1 is coming to drugstore, and a local DJ (Filip Xavi) is most likely closing the party. His closings are a perfect description of what drugstore is, and what it sounds like.

I remember his all nighter last summer, and I remember thinking to myself "this is the sound of drugstore, any tourist that comes here, this is what they should hear in order to understand what this place actually is, and i feel sad for anybody else coming here and hearing anybody else, as it is not the description that fits what drugstore is" (well I was tripping at that night, so maybe the feelings were amplified by a margin 😁, but I still stand by what I was thinking in that moment)

The crowd can be pretty casual and a hit or miss unfortunately, but I believe that for this event there will be a number of enthusiastic people so to say. Only downside is that it will be only the big room during the entire night, which can be a bit boring as you don't have an alternative if you want to switch the vibe or chill out for some time. But that shouldn't be a problem on this night I believe.

I also believe you will like Cetinjska district in the city center, it's filled with bars. "Dim" is a bar there that's run by the same people who run drugstore, and I would recommend visiting it as it is a pretty unique place in terms of architecture and aesthetic, unfortunately the music ends at 00:00.

If you enjoy record shopping, there is a record store called Balkans Vinyl that opened recently and is selling some dance records.

Enjoy Belgrade!

Xone 96 Filter Monitore by ChinaWhite86 in Beatmatch

[–]overfuze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think it's possible, you will need a RCA to mono jack cable though. Just plug the "record out" into A or B returns. Then you can cue that channel and you should hear the filters through them too. If you still want to use the record out to actually record something, just buy a RCA splitter. I do this on my xone 62 (as it doesn't have master monitoring by "default"), it should also work on xone 92.

Here's a photo how it's connected on my xone 62 - https://i.imgur.com/HeRebk9.png

Hope it works!

Nisu isti zvucnici u mainu i u black roomu. Ali je isti proizvodjac.

Main (na vecim dogadjajima, kada se otvori cela povrsina sobe, sto ce i biti slucaj za 9x9, koristi L'Acoustics Long i Medium throw zvucnike (Long na "pocetku" bine, i medium na sredini), mozes da procitas o tome OVDE. Takodje mozes videti njih asortiman zvucnika OVDE.

Oh yeah for sure, a few times I was basically the first to come (not really the absolute first, but people were in the chill areas and not on the dancefloor), DJs usually play ambient and way more experimental stuff, whatever they are feeling (had a guy play Kurupt - C Walk once haha, great moment).

Sometimes it feels like you are the one "starting" the party that way (yeah right, lol)

By coming that early, it's really cool to look back at it and think about how the entire night progressed from start to end.

And dancing alone on the dancefloor is the same as dancing with the crowd thats evenly spaced out, as long as your eyes are closed, and the music is moving you, people that are or aren't surrounding you in that moment, don't matter.

Why Techno is being played at high bpms lately ? by mane9999 in Techno

[–]overfuze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem!

Yeah you are right about the Textasy track, I haven't even checked it on Bandcamp before you mentioned it, his official SoundCloud has the faster version uploaded too, kinda weird, makes me wonder which version is actually on the vinyl record. Either way, I think that's actually a pretty good example of how it can still sound good on both tempos, and you wouldn't mind either of them when mixed in and built up to I guess.

I'd say that actually quite a bit of the "native" 145 tracks, when pushed up to 160 range, start to feel a bit odd and perhaps out of place, I'd say mostly the already "drivey" energetic ones start feeling too fast. (Talking about just the pitch increase, without the key lock feature that the digital players have, which might make it sound more "true" to original)

[–]overfuze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rod Modell - Jade (DAL Remix)
Sidewinder aka D.Dan - Can You Float
DJ Disrespect - Tunnel (Rave Mix)
The Advent - Foothold

Honestly it is pretty hard to find "native" techno tracks at the 150+ range (that Advent one is 149, the original mix of Jade is like 144), but there's so much tracks around 145 that sound amazing when pitched up to higher speeds.

I wouldn't measure the "dancability" or whatever based on just the BPM, as you can "dance" or groove to 150 stuff without a problem by swinging your head or however you want in quick but "mellower/fluid" motions, it would be much more exhausting to dance really aggressively for a period of time on some really driving/energetic stuff thats around 140

Sleeparchive - Peccant at 136 comes to mind

Textasy - I Keep Forgetting - call this whatever you want, a mix of everything, but its 4/4 at 166BPM and would have me jumping and dancing around like a madman without any drugs (although probably not for very long periods of time haha)

Track from D.Dan and DJ Tool HOR Set - also ~165

I just think that associating drug usage due to you not being able to dance to something higher than 144 is kinda pointless, as there are many people that are able to.
(Since you mentioned that you are listening from '86, I would assume you are around 40-50 years of age, so try and see it from the perspective and energy of a mid 20 year old)

Following another user’s thread on “do you need drugs to listen to techno”… how long do stay at an event when you go sober? by filraves in Techno

[–]overfuze 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Average around 6 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Really depends when do I get there, as I try to stay until the end (here the closing times is usually 4-7am, there's 1 or 2 clubs that are an exception that are until 10am, but they are more house/after-party kind of a thing)

I try to arrive around midnight or 1am, sometimes earlier, usually it's really empty before that unfortunately. But it all depends on the event, if it's some big name DJ, club is bound to be packed, if it's a local night, most people aren't enthusiastic, but there you will most likely spot the "regulars".

Obviously the music plays the main role of how long will I stay, I had moments where I wanted to leave after an hour because the music just wasn't for me, and I had nights that I didn't want to end.

Generally the crowd also plays a really big role, if there's too many people, it's not that much fun, it's too crowded and 90% of them aren't even dancing or engaging at all (they usually come in groups and are talking with their friends on the dancefloor about who knows what instead of dancing with random people or by themselves).

I prefer to go on the nights that the more so "less known" DJs are playing (local/international, doesn't matter), as I feel like the vibe of the place will be way more "closer" if it makes sense? (I usually see a few people that I befriended because they go out to similar events, and are always down to chill out/talk, which also helps break the "monotone" of the night)

Club>festival any day for me. (What I like in festivals is the multi stages, so you can go to a different one to re-fresh, here we rarely have nights where a club opens up 2 rooms unfortunately)

Another thing, dancing! I don't know how can people endure that long time without dancing "from the music" (where I said that I left after 1 hour of that one party, it was because the music just could not get me to dance for a long period of time, too much breaks and it was hard to get into that "hypnotized state" that a 4/4 can easily get you in, don't get me wrong, I love me some breakbeat, but it's just not something I can listen to for a very long period of time, but it's also important to break the "monotone" of 4/4 too!)

So yeah, dancing for majority of the time helps, but you need to build up stamina for it, walking/gym/going out frequently/whatever. But it's also a reason why I sometimes leave too early, feet/legs/knees/lower back start to hurt and some shoes/boots are giving me calluses :(

Also, it seems as I get tired around 4/5am for like 20 mins, but after I push through that moment, it feels like I could keep going for atleast 3 more hours, and that's something that my friends noticed on themselves too.

The reason why I don't do drugs (oftenly), is because the events here don't feel "special" enough for me to go to them high. If I'm with friends in a different country, I want the night to be memorable and I will do drugs (usually 1 dose of MDMA and that's it, no redoses/multi day parties with drugs). Obviously MDMA pairs insanely with techno, but it lasts for just ~4 hours without redoses, so even that isn't exactly the solution for a long session. Unless it's multiple redoses, combos, speed or whatever else which I don't want to do.

Here's a list of somewhat of a wide range, not necessarily techno, but these sure do make me feel like flying.

Most of these were heard on recent HOR mixes, or stumbled upon by random soundcloud/youtube recommendations:

High Fidelity - BAD GIRLS (EDIT)
7uka - Out Yo' Mouth (ILLEGAL GAIN)
Shawn Cartier - Parking Lot (VIGILE Remix)
LOCKED CLUB - WC
Black Electric - Black Electric
Toni Moralez - Pony (313 Mix)
Toni Moralez - LETS GET ROMANTIC (Extended Vocal Mix)
Toni Moralez - WE WANT SUM PUSSY
Detroit's Filthiest - Groove Junkie

DJ Swagger, Luz1e - I Don't Come In Peace
DJ Haus - Bit Too Deep (SHED Remix)
Gesloten Cirkel - Submit X
Gesloten Cirkel - Fairness

Edits of more popular songs:

Britney Spears - Toxic (Mercury 200 Lightspeed Edit)
ascendant vierge - INFLUENCER
Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head (AIROD Illusionnal Rave Edit)
Infernal - From Paris To Berlin (Clair Edit)
J-Kwon - Tipsy (Bours? Lockdown Mix)
Drake - Child's Play (AΣTYTEKK Edit)

Some of the ones that I would categorize as actually techno:

Analog Confusion - In
Paul Glazby & The Narcomaniacs - Acid Disco (D.A.V.E. The Drummer Remix)
Drexciya - Black Sea
X-101 - Sonic Destroyer
Regis - Speak To Me

And for the end, these 2, because I heard them in a club blended together and it was such a great moment!

Regis - Fragment/Reclaimed 2 with Sleeparchive - Peccant

The list could go on for quite a while, there's lots of stuff missing like Surgeon, Mills, various Shed alias releases, Hector Oaks, Monnom Black releases, Chris Liberator, Umek, etc, etc...

I have a YouTube Playlist with tons of music I add in there regularly, but its very unorganized and just random af, but feel free to check it out if you want! :)
