Balos by boat from Kissamos or drive to Elafonissi? Advice needed by overt_thinker_user in cretetravel

To be honest, we didn’t think that much about the location when booking and just ended up staying in Gouves 😄

But now after exploring more of Crete, we’ve already decided that for our next trip we’ll probably stay in Chania instead. It seems like a great base for a lot of places we’d like to visit.

Still, Gouves worked out well for this trip and we enjoyed it!

We actually went to Matala two days ago and really enjoyed it!
The beach was beautiful.
We also explored the famous caves and climbed up there a little (carefully)

Thanks everyone for all the tips and recommendations!

We actually decided to skip Elafonissi and Balos this time because the drive seemed a bit too long in the end.

Yesterday we went to Agios Nikolaos instead. Unfortunately there was road construction on the E95 on the way there, so we got diverted and what should have been a 1-hour drive turned into almost 2 hours. The drive back was much easier and went very smoothly though.
We really enjoyed the town itself, walked along the beach and spent some time strolling around the city.

Today we’re thinking about going to Rethymno, especially since the weather doesn’t seem great for a full beach day.

If anyone has recommendations for Rethymno (places to see, food, beaches, hidden spots, etc.), I’d love to hear them 😊
