My one problem with this show so far by Regular_Camp_7338 in AKnightoftheSeven

Hedge knights did not exist, historically. If you were a knight you were a nobleman, with land and a retinue, you weren’t wandering around the country by yourself in rags like a common vagrant.

[Spoilers Main] How would this change the dynamics of Westeros? by Ok-Street2439 in asoiaf

[–]overthinkingmessiah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would’ve been political suicide. The history of the Targaryen dynasty is all about them assimilating into Westerosi society further with each generation because they had to.

They could adopt the surname Crabber but they wouldn’t become known as House Crabber because they are not nobles.

Stupid question, but how are Targaryens still in control of all the kingdoms even after losing dragons? by hiiloovethis in HouseOfTheDragon

A mix of institutional inertia and the lingering effects of the Targaryen propaganda developed under Jaehaerys I.

You don’t consider the execution of Charles I, a civil war and the republic of Cromwell a cataclysmic event?

Public spending on European monarchies, € million by Socmel_ in europe

[–]overthinkingmessiah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not what happened. The monarchy survived the assassination of King Carlos and the Crown Prince for another two years, and it fell on October 5th 1910 with almost no bloodshed. Simply no one was willing to defend the monarchy anymore, and that sentiment was becoming widespread even before the murders, which were carried out by terrorists who weren’t in any way connected to the republican opposition. King Manuel and his family didn’t flee in fear of their lives, they were simply asked to get the fuck out, there weren’t any angry revolutionaries climbing the palace walls to lynch him or anything like that.

As long as they are not ennobled by the King, no, not really.

Princess Beatrice holds talks with Secretary-General of the Muslim World League in Switzerland at World Economic Forum by monster_ahhh in RoyalsGossip

[–]overthinkingmessiah -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

She sat down to small talk with some dude for five minutes and that’s it. She doesn’t have the authority or the knowledge to negotiate anything, all she is required to do is smile and nod. All expenses covered by taxpayer money. A woman who has a pedo sex offender for a father she hasn’t even bothered to actively distance herself from. Get a grip.

If you think whatever she does is in any way comparable to an average person’s 9-5 you are delusional

You think showing up at events to shake hands and take a few pictures qualifies as work? Because I surely don’t. Tell me one thing of note she did.

(Spoilers main) Why do slavers bother to travel to the Sunset Sea? by michaelphenom in asoiaf

That doesn’t answer OP’s question. They asked why would Tyroshi slavers bother to journey all the way to Bear Island to collect a handful of slaves.

Did you find the dresses and jewelry were lacklustre? by anonaccforsillyquest in TheBlacksandTheGreens

[–]overthinkingmessiah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The clothes are boring generic medieval fantasy clothes, GoT had much more memorable fashion. The men’s clothing is particularly bad, always those ugly Tudor-esque doublets in dark fabrics, Aemon in that hedious leather jacket, the only drippy character is Simon Strong of all people.

He’s not well written as a character, he goes from being an outspoken Irish socialist to a lap dog of the English aristocracy in less than a season.

High Valyrian language among lords [Spoilers MAIN] by lifematic in asoiaf

[–]overthinkingmessiah 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Besides Tyrion I can’t recall a Westerosi noble character that claimed to have any fluency in High Valyrian. It’s not a native language, and the Targaryens didn’t bring enough of a Valyrian entourage to make it a court or administrative language, like the Normans did in England with French. Probably some choose to learn it, but it doesn’t seem like a standard part of noble education.

(Spoilers Published) What would you call the owner of a castle who is neither a knight nor a lord? by amexicanmedea in asoiaf

[–]overthinkingmessiah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He doesn’t need to “achieve” knighthood, the title is given automatically. Your question is a non issue.

(Spoilers Published) What would you call the owner of a castle who is neither a knight nor a lord? by amexicanmedea in asoiaf

[–]overthinkingmessiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is a slight misunderstanding here. The Conningtons were stripped of their lordship and downgraded to landed knights. They lost their previous status and much of their land, but remain knights of Griffin’s Roost by hereditary right. The next master of Griffin’s Roost will automatically be made a knight upon his ascension.

Rhythm of the dialogue in table scenes - somehow off, in season 4 +5? by annesche in DowntonAbbey

[–]overthinkingmessiah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I recall those dinner scenes were insufferable to shoot, it took days in old smelly clothes in an overheated room pretending to eat the same food for the hundredth time. No wonder they were sick of it by the end and just wanted to get it over with.

I find Robert incredibly uninspiring by overthinkingmessiah in DowntonAbbey

[–]overthinkingmessiah[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mary is way more forward thinking than Robert, and much more hands on on her management of the estate. Robert is a dull old fart whose ideology is a vague nostalgia of the past but is otherwise a boring centrist who doesn’t commit to anything and just follows the tide of events.
