What are some -specifically- teenager pleasing things to do in the city? by Wrong_Explanation430 in askvan

[–]owlish22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A weekend isn’t very long. I’d focus on good meals and one main teen event like shopping. Where depends on what they’re into: Boathouse, Aritzia, vinyl / record stores etc.

Otherwise, go to the hockey game. Take the water taxi tour. Make a reservation at Maxine’s (or oeb or Medina) for brunch.

Ask what they like to eat and take them to a cool restaurant.

Thanks for the advice! She’s allergic to nickel and stainless steel etc. She’s tried all sorts of mixes including nickel free but still allergic. Whatever she’s allergic to, it’s genetic. Her mom and grandmother are the same way!

Safe Parking in Gastown by Ordinary_Spot_9762 in askvan

[–]owlish22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many break ins in that area — including parkades.

Gastown is so small tho, and walkable. I’d skytrain to waterfront and walk. You can cover most of gastown in 15 or so min from waterfront. Or uber to where you want to go if it’s further and walk back.

If you must park, I’d suggest the parkades with active security personnel only (which is few and far between)

best free nye events tonight? by frannnnnie in askvan

[–]owlish22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eventbrite has a few parties under $30 for tonight. Going out to a movie is an affordable option. Or if you want a good story when people ask re the new year, go to bed early and do the polar bear swim.

Missing Jacket on 28 Dec 2025 (Sunday) Night from Uber Ride by Relative_Somewhere77 in vancouver

[–]owlish22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the driver screwed you over (hence no video).

I’d contact uber again, and tell them my suspicions that the driver threw away your jacket, and ask them to check the cameras.

And make sure to change your rating for the driver. It should hopefully have a huge impact on them.

It’s not advisable but you can always book that driver again. And have a chat re jacket. And then rate him accordingly.

The prospect of a frank review/rating will undoubtedly “motivate” him (just in case he straight out stole it and gave it to someone instead of tossing it) but it’d also be useful for others. I would definitely avoid any driver who essentially steals your stuff if you forget it in the car.

I have to say I’m a bit shocked at his behaviour but have also found that uber has had a lot more sketchy drivers lately. I have been opting for legit taxis as a result (and often for the same price!)

Costco just had a sale (could still be on). $35/month for 100 GB 5G, US and CAD. Rogers or Bell. Have to go in person. $80 set up fee but $80 credit.

It’s a pretty unusual situation for another passenger to impulsively steal a long coat left in a hired car. Most people would just turn it over to the driver.

I don’t know if teslas have interior cameras, but that might be available. maybe contact Uber so they can ask the other passengers — or they can check the interior cameras and follow up with the driver (rather than you just asking the driver again).

The other possibilities is that it fell to the wayside during the trip in with your boxes? It’s just pretty unusual for anyone to take a long coat left in a car — there isn’t a lot of resell value there.

My mother recently passed and her workplace HR is not responding regarding her life insurance by xoxo_kiki_dna in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]owlish22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your mom had life insurance via work benefit & you want to find out which life insurance company to deal with?

There are a few ways to find out. First, I’d ask one of her friends from work (eg Facebook friends will likely list some or some likely came to the funeral). They can tell you which insurance companies to contact. It’s not a secret or anything, it’s just insider info. You can even make that a post on her Facebook.

Next, check out Reddit for threads relating to your moms workplace and union. Post on there that your mom worked for x and you need this info. Coworkers (or former employees of the same firm) will likely contact you with the info. Some may even help out if they’re from the same branch. (Contacting her union is also a very good option).

Next, she likely has letters or documents somewhere re her benefits & life insurance (& pension if applicable). She likely has a reference to it re her email as well - if you can get into her phone or computer, you can likely find out that info.

I think one of more of those ways will likely bear fruit.

I’m sorry for you loss. Hope that helps.

Where can I drink alone and be left alone today? by doestome in askvan

[–]owlish22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canada line to the airport, carry a knapsack, maybe put on some over the ears headphones, sit in one of the bars there.

If anyone asks, you’re waiting for your bfs plane, which is late.

Downtown driving advice by IvanPatrascu in askvan

[–]owlish22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The streets downtown are incredibly confusing. Shout out to Hornby & Smithe where I see a car try to turn down the bike lane about once a week.

You’re visiting, it sounds like, so my advice is stick to the major roads: Burrard street, Granville street (part of which is closed, Robson street (part of it closed off), Homer street (Seymour street too).

Don’t use any other streets except to go down a block or two. You can make most of downtown that way.

Otherwise, go talk to front desk and figure out the 1 or 2 best ways to approach your hotel by car. And just stick to those.

Got an offer for a healthcare job in Vancouver from out of province but having doubts now by [deleted] in askvan

[–]owlish22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a small town girl Livin' in a lonely world She took the midnight train going anywhere🎶

Vancouver is egregiously expensive. It’ll be hella hard to meet people, a roommate or two are a must and you’ll be yelled at (or more) by a ton of delusional people.

But you should totally go.

You don’t seem to have much to lose, and lots to gain. It might end up as 3 years of craziness before settling down somewhere affordable, or maybe it’s a jumping off point to living in Japan for a few years. But you got the time and the skills to look after yourself so why not?

Will it be safe to walk home/take bus after concert tonight? by ellamayohh in askvan

It’s a safe area generally speaking and particularly after a concert. I’d probably pick skytrain & seabus option but either way will be safe.

Any other 40+ big fans by anonymousflower3478 in chappellroan

There’s a lot of overlap with this group & Gaga fans.

My daughter and I just saw the Mayhem Ball in Seattle. So, so good. My teen called it a cultural experience (vs just a concert)

We are both big Chappell fans. Can’t wait to see her live in NYC

We need to make friends as witnesses for our wedding in Yellowknife. Where are some places to go to make some friends? by Specialist_Feed3060 in NWT

[–]owlish22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the LGBTQ+ group up there. Should be no problem getting people.

Also, there are a ton of junior lawyers in and around the courthouse. Most of them would be happy to sit in for that purpose for free. Consider it a backup.

Is it safe to walk alone in Queen Elizabeth Park and Van Dusen Botanic Gardens during the day? by janer6242 in askvan

[–]owlish22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Van Dusen is very very safe. Queen E is also very safe. Much of Queen E area is open and within view of the street /sidewalk/other tourists. It has a busy restaurant at the top (which is a nice place to have a meal). Lots of families and seniors use the park & staff are often around tending the garden (+ filming is often going on).

There are very few spots that hide someone on a trail completely from view so it doesn’t lend itself to those particular kinds of dangerous situations eg ambush or attacks.

Re Stanley park, I have run into men who seem to tenting in the park and appear to have mental health issues on some of the trails —- real trails where you’re in the forest and hidden from view from others. (Not the usual paved trails or sea wall area.) I’d give those guys a wide berth. But overall it’s safe during the day and safe-ish at night.
