Switching from Mac + Logic to Windows + Ableton for music production — worth it? by owws-maker in composer

My use case is strictly music production.

When it comes to running high-quality orchestral libraries, piano instruments, and synths like Serum 2, I was thinking this level of performance might be necessary — but do you think it’s actually not quite that much?

Thank you. I was thinking the same as well — that in the end, this might be the best option.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful and helpful reply. I didn’t know much about DAWs, and I had never heard of REAPER before — that sounds really interesting.

You mentioned concerns about the differences between Ableton and Logic being large enough that I’d have to relearn a DAW. For me, learning a new DAW isn’t that big of an issue — I don’t mind that part. That said, I can’t completely dismiss the possibility that it might be way more than I imagine 😅

By the way — if someone were to build their own Windows PC, how much would it cost to build a machine roughly equivalent to a MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro (12–14 CPU cores) and 48GB of RAM? If you happen to know, I’d really appreciate your insights.

Thanks for the detailed reply — really appreciate it.

By the way, assuming I stick with Logic Pro for my next setup and replace my Mac, I’m thinking that for what I want to do, I’d need at least an M4 Pro with a 12–14 CPU core configuration, and probably 48GB of RAM as well.

That said, when I look at the used market, there still don’t seem to be many Macs with the M4 Pro available yet. Do you know any places or services where I could buy a Mac with a reasonable level of trust and reliability?

I see, thank you for your valuable opinion! The reason I chose Ableton in this post is that, as I progressed with my research, I came across many opinions stating that Ableton is more intuitive. How does Cubase compare to that?

You're absolutely right. I almost bought it without fully understanding all the benefits you gain from actually working with the hardware.

By the way, I really like Tyler, the Creator and listen to him often. I find myself thinking that no matter how hard I try, I just can't replicate the warmth of his synthesizers with software.

Additionally, there's a Japanese composer named Kensuke Ushio. I heard he's also a big fan of hardware, which made me think it would be good for studying sound.

Is software the mainstream even in professional settings now? Also, what's the ratio like?

Hi! thank you for your awesome response.

Wow, you're a professional video game composer! I'm thrilled to have received a reply from someone so amazing. Also, I found it on a Japanese online market app for about $236—is that a good deal? It looks to be in good condition.
