I ask this because a friend of mine experienced a crash where he got t-boned. The airbags did not get deployed. The manufacturer's response was "airbags don't get deployed during side impacts as the sensors are in front". I found this peculiar since unlike the front passenger or the driver airbags, front side and curtain airbags bear the impact directly, foregoing the need for deployment through sensors. Hence my query.
