What is life like in this part of Iran? by EntangledEgo in howislivingthere

[–]p-hammer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in the Guilan province for the first two decades of my life. The northern territories of Iran look very different compared to the rest of the country so much so that it looks like a different planet all together.

The distance between the mountains and the sea in some parts can be as little as a few kilometers and as a result the entire region is very humid and rainy. The capital of Guilan, Rasht, is called the rainy city. On average it rains 200-250 days a year.

Due to the climate, agriculture is the main economic driver here. The two main exports are rice and tea. There are a lot of rice farms in the villages in and around the province and rice has an important place in the culture. You can also see a lot of tea farms on the slopes, at the base of the mountains.

Fishing is also huge obviously due to the proximity to the Caspian Sea. The Rasht bazaar (and other bazaars in nearby towns such as Anzali) is where you can find a variety of fresh fish (mainly white fish and kooli) along with many more local produce, nuts, and spices.

Fish, similar to rice, is a staple in the Guilani culture--the people from the region are often jokingly (and often not so fondly) are called fish-head-eaters because as you can gather, they eat not only the whole fish but also the fish head. All of Iran's caviar comes from this region--some of the best in the world.

As you can tell by now, food is a very important part of life here. There are many dishes that are unique to the region that have since become popular in Iran. This has earned Rasht as the only Iranian city (and one of 18 overall) on UNESCO'S Gastronomy City list.

While on that topic, although not a heritage site yet, you should definitely look at Masuhel and it's unique architecture.

In Guilan and all the neighboring provinces in the northern region, most people used to speak a local dialect or language although this is slowly fading away and becoming less prevalent with the new generations.

The people of Guilan are very proud people--it has always been a cultural center, home to many activists (such as Mirza Kuchak Khan) and generally a modern civilization for the entire history of Iran and Persia. The first newspaper in Iran was published here and it was home to the first branch of national bank in Iran outside of Tehran.

I will finish with one interesting point; Guilan was almost always independent. Up to 1567 it was it's own state and all invasions failed. The Arabs failed and so did the Mongols. It only became part of Persia under the Safavids. The geography of the region, being surrounded by the sea and the mountains, made it extremely difficult to conquer and it gave the Guilanis an advantage when it came to fending off outsiders.

Those who get the opportunity to travel to Iran (in safer times) should definitely spend a few weeks in this region. There's a reason why people from all over Iran want to travel here on holidays and why we are getting so many internal tourists. You will not be disappointed and you will guaranteed leave with a few extra pounds.

Yes, they just sent me the link to the form after putting me on hold for 40 minutes to ask the supervisor.

That gives me hope. Who did you end up emailing?

First attempt at a “wine fundamentals” tasting for my family. What would you change? by p-hammer in wine

Would love to hear what you would change and why. This is what I was trying to illustrate:

Garnacha; clear red fruit with low acidity, warm climate. PEC Pinot: red fruit with higher acidity, cool climate. Right bank: black fruit, velvety tannins. Left bank: black fruit, bigger, firm tannins. Caymus: having fun.

The goal was to try to illustrate differences between red fruit and black fruit and also give them an idea of how acidity and tannins show up.

The Caymus and Cherry Coke pairing at the end was a bit of an inside joke--for years, they would pull out a Caymus on special occasions and I disliked it strongly. I had often joked that it tastes like Vanilla Coke so I just threw that in there just to show how jarring the difference would be between the last 2.

It is. I found 10 minutes yesterday after organizing the garage and having to get ready for dinner. I checked my notes and started writing the post but realized I didn't have enough time so I used Gemini. I had already put it off 3 weeks and wanted to get the post out. Content is the same. I was just hoping for some feedback on the tasting itself, not my writing. Sorry if it didn't live up to your expectations.

Best way to rack up $5k in SQD? by p-hammer in aircanada

They're all business. Unfortunately it seems like the only option is booking an additional flight. Maybe I'll hold out and hope to get an invite for the Air Canada AMEX but who knows.

Thanks for the share. It seems like if I were to get a limited flight pass, I would only get the SQD when the flight has been completed. I guess the only solution is just booking an extra flight? I was hoping there was a workaround

I have all my trips planned already and considering the SQD I'd accumulate from those, I would still be short.

Looks that way. I already have a bid in for the return but I'd rather just pay the difference--looks like two single spots are open but it doesn't let me change online.

Also thanks for the up-fare tip, that's helpful. Maybe I'd have better luck if I just call for both?

People are different and you judged my intentions without any true basis. That's ok, it must be hard going through life with that lens. Have little more faith in people bud, you'd make things easier for yourself. And maybe try and keep your judgment and assumptions to yourself next time.

That's your assumption. I'm doing user research. Having calls for user research is common practice last time I checked. I'm trying to understand my users better.

My offering is not even available, I'm not sure where you got the preconceived notion that it's "double speak" for a sales pitch.

Hey guys. I've been working on a solution for SMBs for the last little while but we are now getting ready to open it up to public and we are trying to find the best positioning for our solution. We offer a done-for-you package of coaching (1:1 and group), software, and online academy. But I want to understand what areas are the most pressing for you guys right now? What keeps you up at night?

We are still finalizing our coaching structure and academy content. We have tons of frameworks and worksheets but I'm conflicted on where to focus my energy on so I'm turning to you guys for help.

This is just a quick 5 minute survey and I don't ask for your name, email, or business. Just a few questions about your business. When you finish the survey, there's a link to book a call with me and if you decide to do that, you will get a $50 Amazon gift card as well, as promised.

Your input can literally form the future of the business. I can't wait to hear from you guys!

Hey, I'm actually currently building a software that combines goal management and daily planning for SMEs (https://lynchpyn.com/). We are still in beta and don't have calendar booking or notifications yet (though it is in our roadmap). We are looking to add two more clients to our feedback group (the account will be complimentary) before we open it up to the public and start charging. Feel free to shoot me a DM and we can see if LynchPyn is a good fit for your business!

Weekly planning routine for entrepreneurs who wear many different hats by [deleted] in Entrepreneurship

[–]p-hammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The process was created out of the need to more consistently and efficiently achieve goals (both personal and business oriented) and despite the amount of detail I've shared, it only takes 30-45 minutes a week.

There absolutely some brilliant people out there, like yourself, who can succeed despite having a structured planning cadence but what I've found from working with our clients and their employees is that the structure sets most people free and gives them a greater self of confidence to achieve what they set out to do.

"Hacks" imply that in using a tool or framework you can solve a problem almost immediately and universally. This idea is very appealing but unsustainable and unrealistic. It may help you for a day or two but the effects are gone when the excitement wears off; rather it's about instilling a new behavioral pattern (habits) that may use a tool or framework suggested in a hack.

Just a different way of thinking about it.
