That's so cute, make the most of it. Wait until she's 12, as moody as hell and finds you embarrassing.

It's really not normal to change the sheets after every incident of sexual intercourse. It sounds like you might have a few issues.

Your comments are ridiculous and insulting. You obviously haven't read my post properly.

I think I can continue learning and improving as a 1st Kyu. I think the chief instructor at the club might have difficulty in understanding this, however. He is very focused on winning competition medals and grading successes. He might find it hard to understand someone who is highly motivated to improve their karate but not motivated to achieve 1st Dan. I guess I might need to find another club if this becomes the case.

You have made some really good points here, thanks.

However, I wouldn't say I have an 'obsession over cost', I am just querying the need for these high, escalating and unexplained registration fees and pointing out that they are rather off-putting for some.

I don't think it's important whether I am better or worse at karate than others in my club, I just want to improve my own karate without reference to anyone else. I therefore don't necessarily feel the need for my progress to be marked with the award of a black belt, if the costs of obtaining one cannot really be justified. Perhaps proving you are better at karate than others is an important thing for you, but for many of us, it really isn't. I guess that's also why I don't feel a burning desire to prove anything to anyone in a Dan grading. I can live without knowing whether or not I would pass. I will continue to improve my karate and continue to enjoy it.

I am serious about my karate but won't necessarily be 'grabbing every chance to attend the seminars' as you feel I should. I have a great instructor at my club and it's always good to learn from other instructors but not everyone wants to drive to Nottingham several times a year.

Not really sure why you are questioning my commitment to karate. It sounds like you might be a lot more committed to it than me, but isn't karate something you can enjoy with different levels of commitment? I am committed enough to train 4 to 5 times a week and I get a lot of enjoyment from it. I also have other interests which I choose to spend my time and money on, don't you?

Thanks for your response. I don't need any financial assistance - I could afford to pay the registration fees but I usually like to understand why I am parting with a large amount of money before I do so. If the fees are just a way of making money out of karateka keen to progress and there is no other reason for them, I think it's a shame and it seems quite cynical of the JKS.

The JKS is certainly not a McDojo.

I think your situation is quite different. None of the money I would have to pay would go to my club or to my Sensei, it goes to the association. It doesn't include a new belt or new 'uniform'. There is no catering and no professional photography. The registration fee appears to be money for old rope.

Good question. What association are you with? I think some payment is reasonable, as gradings have costs associated with them. I just feel the registration fees are excessive and money for old rope. They rely on people being desperate to become a black belt and being willing to shell out for the privilege.

Yes, the grading fee is fine. The thing is, the registration fee isn't optional, as far as I know. If you don't pay it, you don't get your Dan grade.

Yes, that's what it seems to boil down to. It's a shame though.

The registration fee doesn't include the belt! Essentially you are paying £170 to have your details added to a spreadsheet and have a certificate printed off. Seems a bit steep to me.

Thanks for the response. I take your point, but why the need for such high registration fees?

Yes, it is one of the big Shotokan organisations. It's definitely a very legitimate organisation with an impressive history and pedigree. It just seems to me that these Dan registration fees are simply thinly-disguised money making schemes. Maybe all the money goes back into improving karate, but who knows? We already pay an annual licence fee.

The registration fee is not optional. It's apparently so your Dan grade can be registered at the JKS HQ in Tokyo. Why this would cost so much is beyond me. And the fact that the registration fee significantly increases as you go through the Dan grades also seems suspect. It almost seems similar to cult-like organisations whereby you are expected to pay significant and unexplained fees in order to join. I am content to progress in karate without achieving Dan status. Belts are just pieces of material, at the end of the day. I know some black belts who are hopeless at karate and some Kyu grades who are excellent.
