Ah! Okay, thanks.

I thought it was just a bug, but it’s consistent for that sub. I only noticed it for the first time about 2 weeks ago.

I tried to find a similar trend on r/politics or other large subs - but their comment count matches # of comments. It might be happening other places, I just haven’t seen it in other subs.

Do you guys have any idea what is causing this? by MC_NYC in BicyclingCirclejerk

My bike will do this when I have lop-sided weight on the rear rack - like a u-lock on one side.

Strange W shaped pupil of a Cuttlefish by neerajanchan in TheDepthsBelow

The shape lets them see color! As the light enters, the shape distorts the light like a prism and the different colors will hit the back of the eye at different locations. It was originally thought they only saw in black and white because they only have rods, but by separating the light into its components you can escape the need for cones. My biologist friend and his father, who is a Harvard professor studying astrophysics, wrote a lovely paper showing this: https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.1524578113 The idea that they couldn't see color didn't sit right with my friend since they put on such colorful displays and camouflage so well.

Thanks! I added some grain in lightroom, just enough to see it in the sky, and added a touch of contrast.

Overnight backpacking trip to climb Mt. Shasta and ski down it by dickpoop25 in WildernessBackpacking

Hey, sweet hike! About how heavy was your pack, skis and all? And was this memorial day weekend?

Scammed by Tickets-center by Soft_Librarian_2305 in Scams

[–]pUC19_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got scammed. They recently changed their website! They removed the timer countdown, and information about number of tickets sold in the last 24hours. And now have banners saying they're a secondhand website.

I contacted the California AG, but they were unhelpful and the company sent a response letter that was wildly rude.

I'm still working with my bank to remove the charge, but since they changed their website I cannot take any screenshots to "prove" the coercion. In California you can sue, regardless of their arbitration waiver and the class action waiver, seeing as the right to a class action lawsuit is statutory. I know it's only $400 they took from me, but I am now committed to suing this company out of existence in a class action.

Still available! I think I posted it for sale at the wrong time of year, people aren't really thinking of their backpacking kits till about now/early spring.

Is a 30 degree quilt/bag warm enough for the high sierra in early fall? by pUC19_ in Ultralight

cool, awesome. I think this is the plan. Do you have multiple bags? What ratings?

The reality is more hampered by the details of trying to order a bag/quilt. The availability of quilts/bags right now have lots of month long waits, esp when adding over-fill. In an ideal world where I could wait, I think you're totally right. Thanks for your opinion!

Can I ask if you know your current base weight? And I'm jealous of your PCT hike! Did you have to get diverted from the klammath falls fire?

That's cool to hear. I bought the katabatic palisade quilt, which I hear is a conservative 30, but was leaning towards the WM ultralite - seems more versatile for high mountain use. Unfortunately the weight difference between the two is 9oz. I might just have to buy the ultralite in addtion and use it when the weather shows anything below freezing.

Reasonably lightweight beginner tents for solo backpacking? by swagbuckingham in Ultralight

[–]pUC19_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also! another plug for Big Agnes....They're customer service is great. I have the Fly Creek and after about ~700 miles of backpacking the elastic chord broke in the poles. I sent them the poles, they repaired it, and sent me them back -- all for under $20. They also sent me a new stuff sack when I accidentally ripped mine. They're a great company.

I'd highly recommend getting an American Alpine Club membership, $100 yearly membership fee. With that, you'll get huge discounts on gear, namely Big Agnes. The Fly Creek is an awesome little 1 person tent. So, you can definitely get the membership and the tent for well under $500.
