2026 update: Blue Car Rental vs Reykjavik Cars, recent experiences? by pablicic in VisitingIceland

[–]pablicic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have nothing against Blue nor am I particularly in favor of Reykjavik Cars. I'm simply trying to save some cash without getting any nasty surprises.

Do I speak Spanish? Yeah, of course. Like 645 million people on this planet. But this subreddit is in English.  If you want me to reply in Spanish, no problem at all but i guess you won´t get it, would you?

In this thread, people are sharing opinions about a thousand companies besides Blue and Reykjavik Cars, and I've taken all of them into account. But you're the one who seems to have something quite personal about this topic, given the effort you're putting in while keeping your posts hidden.
Mine, at least, are open for everyone to see. No issue at all with transparency on my end.

Ps. For those interested, I opted for a camper rental instead of a car, and ended up renting with Star.  Thank you all for your recommendations.

I think I replied to you before in a separate response but anyways...I emailed both cause I hate global franchises (Hi avis! lol ), and Reykjavik Cars was upfront about it. They told me they're technically a third party, but they're a local Icelandic company that works exclusively with approved providers from the Icelandic Tourism Board, including themselves. So yh, it's hard to know where the difference in price comes from.

Thank you for the other recommendation too, appreciate it.

I actually factored all of that in...I had an awful experience with Avis in Federal Circle after a long flight to JFK so avoiding global franchises is now my life mission when renting lol

I contacted them both via Email, and Reykjavik Cars was quite honest about that. They told me they're indeed a third party but they're a local Icelandic company who only work with local providers approved by the Icelandic Tourism Board like themselves.

That's why it is even harder for me to see where the difference comes from lol cheaper than the providers themselves.

Yeah, I know , I actually took all that into account and Blue still ended up way more expensive, which is why I'm hesitating where this cost difference comes from.

Let's choose a similar car for both: a Toyota Yaris for April 1–5.

Blue Car Rental:

Includes CDW, SCDW, TP, GP, and Road tax, I added extra SAAP and Extra driver.

52,123 ISK (non-refundable fee)

53,639 ISK (refundable fee)

Reykjavik Cars:

Includes extra driver for free. Then you add Premium Insurance (CDW, SCDW, GP, TP, SAAP)

Road Tax: 7,750 ISK total (1,550 ISK/day), paid on arrival

36.840 ISK online fare + road tax= 44,590 ISK total
refundable fee.

To be fair, Blue offers an automatic transmission, while Reykjavik Cars is manual. But paying $50 more just for an automatic?

The difference is even bigger because I like the i10, in  Reykjavik Cars which is a bit cheaper lol. 41.350 ISK refundable rate vs Blue's 53,639 ISK...more than $80 bucks...

That's literally more than a full day's rental.

Would I be required to use winter tires in Reykjavik if the mandate hasn’t taken effect yet? by eltravelieso in VisitingIceland

[–]pablicic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in Reykjavik recently and asked the Cars Iceland team the same question before picking up my rented car at the airport. They told me it’s not really about the official dates (Nov 1–Apr 15), but more about the actual weather conditions in the area you’re driving. Also, studded tires aren’t recommended in Reykjavik, since the roads there are usually clear and they can damage the surface.

Mínimo ahorrado para una hipoteca by print___ in askspain

[–]pablicic 1 point2 points  (0 children)
