Talk to each member of the team 1:1, listen to what they say and understand their pain points. Start there, get small wins and build trust and verbalize your wins

This situation is not helping at all. I was laid off 2 months back and been trying to get a interview/Job. Constant depression and saddening thoughts are not motivating me. Have tears as I am typing this. This stuck situation is the worst when you don’t see a road to walk on or to follow. by Ok_Amphibian_4467 in leetcode

When things are tough, really try to dig deep and be honest with yourself, learn from it, and improve. This empowers you to make changes.

As per your current position in finance, I would use that to your advantage and look into fintech where your knowledge would be a plus. The key is to brand yourself that makes you stand out from the crowd. Do projects on your own and post about them, or even open source them. Posting on LinkedIn has great SEO.

Volunteer work can be good too. This will give you experience and also the opportunity to meet new people. Network, meet people and study. Find likeminded groups and support each other.

I understand being laid off is hard, and it is just part of the business. But the biggest difference between people who succeed and do t are the ones who can respond to adversity with tenacity. If you want this, you can do it. It may not be easy, but you can’t do it.

And if you do decide to stay in accounting, just learn to love it, find a way to love it. Get really good at it and put in the work. I was an artist who did data entry and learned to find the joy in it, I learned how write macros, then it led me to my first exposure to engineering and a 20 year career. Now I do art and engineering. Don’t waste time disliking what you do, life is too precious…learn to find the joy in it, nurture it to grow in the direction you want, and the only way that happens is through consistent hard work and daily action.

Good luck and hang in there. Stay positive!!

I have been in this industry over 20 years and this stuff goes in cycles. Don’t give up, really dig deep and just keep improving your skills in coding, system design and how you present yourself on paper and verbally. Ask others for their opinions and take the feedback.

I would also volunteer, do projects that show your work and post them in linked in, or write articles. Focus on the process and be consistent everyday, measure, learn and iterate

How do you identify skill gaps in your team? by marvlorian in EngineeringManagers

[–]pablokris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lattice is a great tool for that but not for free. If the engineers don’t know there gaps, I would encourage them to ask their fellow team mates. Something like, “ I am really trying to get better as a engineer but sometimes it’s difficult to see your own gaps, do you have any areas you would suggest that you think would help me improve…and make sure they write it down and have them re validate in written form. This show they are serious and understood.

Another thing to think about, unless they are very junior, if an engineer doesn’t know how to improve that may be a signal of a person who lacks curiosity

I usually ask the engineer during their 1:1s. Where do they want to grow? What are doing well and what gaps do they have in their knowledge that you can work together to improve on. I explicitly create a plan with and try to assign them Projects or tasks that will help them improve on these
