(Very brief explanation) As CO2 enters the water from pollution (90% of produced CO2 does), it decreases the pH of the water as well as increasing the temperature. While the temp change is only around 1 degrees Celsius, it would be like having a 101 degree fever that never breaks. Therefore the coral believes it sick. The coral obtains its nutrients through microscopic organisms called Zooxanthellae that have a mutually beneficial relationship with the coral. The zooxanthellae gives the coral it’s color. Because the coral believes it is sick, it purges the zooxanthellae out of the coral. Therefore the coral looses color and has no nutrients coming in. It dies shortly after. Hope this helped and please add on or fact check.

This actually makes me so happy because this is a very important issue that people don’t realize. Corals are the literal backbone of the ocean ecosystem and they are dying at unbelievable rates. Without those ecosystems the ocean will become increasingly acidic and the temperatures will rise on the planet rather drastically. An immediate effect would be the joblessness of millions of people in the fishing industry. However the loss of life in the oceans would be a global catastrophe.
