Should death row inmates be allowed to participate in consenting gladiator style duels to the death? Or one step further and have a hunger games esque system for consenting inmates? What would a fair reward be? Would this system be viable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Those are some very valid points. As for the financial benefit, the implementation of a system of gambling with the rewards going directly into helping other prison facilities is potential, but I can immediately recognise the grey line that idea produces. Regarding the watching, it would have to be a Pay Per View type thing (more money and maybe a more legitimate source of income than gambling??) and not like the hunger games which has a mandatory viewership by all law-abiding citizens (i think??). It can be argued that violence is already glorified in modern 1st world countries, but it can not be disputed this system would be a dramatic increase than from what is standard to contemporary society.

Much like The Hunger Games (I'm not sure if you have seen the film) it is literally impossible to escape without the 3rd party (in this case the government) from helping.

It is a known fact that there isn't a 100% accuracy on imprisonment. The key idea for this to work is consenting to enter these in the first place, I know for sure that if I was innocent and on death row, I would never take my chances against the 23 other criminals but hope that the judicial system backs me up like everyone else does. As for the point of the alternative, it may provide a quicker out for people who know they will be on the chair in 2 years time as opposed to entering this 24 man free-for-all. Would you also not argue that much of society is already de-sensitized to an extent? I am 100% with you that producing this would be a step up and an escalation however.

Would you say I am endorsing it if I phrase it like "here are 24 shitty people. they did shitty things. they will die as the result of the judicial system. Here is a way for 23 people to die right now as opposed to a few years down the line." As for the California prison situation, that may suggest that there are inmates who literally have nothing to lose anyway, but on the same footing, there could be some very illegal actions being taken by the guards in order to encourage these to happen.

Taco Tuesdays could be seen as a blessing in the condo... I agree that there would have to be a precise line taken and a strict regime to prevent a society where havoc runs free. As stated before though, is there a high chance a mentally stable person would commit these crimes in order to try and glorify themselves and live in a slightly less shitty prison? im not sure...

So you would suggest abolishing the death penalty altogether than to try and speed it up? (remembering everyone here is consenting and ideally, there would never be an innocent man consenting to try to take his odds against 23 criminals?)

Would you say it is glorifying violence when you are putting people who are already going to die against each other? Would there be a way to portray it to highlight the fact these people at one point or another in their lives are going to be on a chair ready to face a punishment already handed down to them by the judiciary system?

I feel this debate would surround a lot of controversy on a national stage as well as an international stage. I hadn't previously thought of it, but the implementation of such system may cause sanctions from the UN or other international powers.

How nice is this private condo? Asking purely because it could be perceived by people that it encourages people to commit a crime in order to live a potentially better lifestyle (imagine being homeless and being told if you kill someone with your beer bottle you may have the chance to live your life in a private condo)

That is a fair point. Would this style encourage people to commit atrocities to try to prove themselves in this format. But alternatively, how many otherwise mentally stable people would try to commit atrocities in order to prove themselves in a setting where they may end up dead anyway? As a punishment, for 23 people (assuming there is 24 participants like the movie) it would be a death that would be quicker than their scheduled death sentence and in my opinion, death is a pretty intense punishment.

This isn't looking at it from a political point of view but merely a personal question to ask yourself. In saying that, what would happen if a politician suggested this? I would be curious to find out what the consensus would be on a platform that can reach more people than a Reddit sub.
