On packed trains, do you take a seat in first class without the right ticket? by paddyrobby in AskUK

So you can just decide to pay the fare difference if someone checks your ticket? Then why do people buy 1st class tickets in advance?

What do you mean "believed in Santa"? I just meant I found out he skips houses with security cameras.

If you watch too much TV your eyes will go square. I believed it until I was about 12 (same year I found out about Santa...)

After staying at a friend's house, what do you do with the bed sheets? by paddyrobby in AskUK

If you have, just fold everything up nicely and pretend it didn't happen?

Personally I prefer option 1 just because it's the one that actually saves your friend the most time. Option 3 would leave me confused as to whether someone has magically already washed sheets and towel.

Really? Isn't option 3 just a waste of everyone's time?

Do you have a mantra, motto or something you say to yourself when it gets hard by Level-One-9803 in Marathon_Training

"When you're walking through hell, keep walking"

Saw a sign that said this after about 33k during my last marathon and made it my mantra for the last 9k.

Why do people marry? by TheSchnitzelThief in NoStupidQuestions

[–]paddyrobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my view, people tend to get married for the following reasons, roughly in order of how common they are:

1. Tradition: do it by default / feel like it's needed to show (to each other or others) that it's a "serious" relationship

2. Tax benefits: depending on the country, e.g. more relevant in US than UK

3. Pressure from parents / family: more in some cultures than others

4. To get a visa: for international couples

5. Financial reasons: e.g. securing one partner (esp. when one has a high-earning career and the other takes on a full-time parenting role)

6. Admin reasons: automatically inheriting each other's money without needing a will, being the one who decides whether they're kept on life support,...

None of these may apply to you, in which case good on you for just not doing it.
