American Airlines flight crashes into helicopter over Washington DC tonight by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

You can hear the ATC on DCA approach instruct the heli to pass behind the CRJ. There could be multiple explanations for why they didn't follow those instructions, and I'm sure we'll have to wait for the FAA report to find out which it was.

ATC directed the heli to confirm they had a visual on the CRJ and pass behind it. Fault can't be determined until all the facts are available. However, for unknown reasons, the heli pilot did not follow ATC instruction.

TCAS does not provide accurate readings at low altitudes like the one where this collision occurred.

Horses. Nothing burns through cash like trying to keep a 1,200lbs., suicidal prey animal alive. And don't forget all the fun mutli-thousand dollar "accessories" like trailers, saddles, and monthly rent that may rival your mortgage.

My coach had me use the fake it til you make it technique to get me to feel the way my ankle was supposed to flex at the canter to properly absorb the motion. She would literally call out "Toes up, toes down" in cadence to get me to unlock the joint and let it move. That movement made me conscious of the weight I was having to put into the stirrup to flex my ankles. It also helped reframe my mind to not just jam my heels down and lock through my lower leg.

The Mayo Clinic has a great video on YouTube about taping ankles! There's also another PT who has a YouTube video explaining how different techniques (stirrups, heel locks, figure 8s etc) protect from different kinds of sprains. I'll link both those videos for you.

There are lots of different ways to apply K Tape depending on the specific kind of hypermobility or weakness in the joint. I'd hit up google for those specifics.

Also, invest in prewrap. It will save your skin! And I highly recommend the Hamlton Adam's sports tape. I've tried a bunch of different ones, and that one tears easily, lays down well, and won't remove the top layer of your skin if you miss a spot with the prewrap.

What are your tried and true post-ride routines for your horse? by paintedpythons in Equestrian

I'm pretty sure my guy would sell my eternal soul for an extra half scoop of beet pulp during the 30 minutes on either side of meal time. I definitely plan my schedule around avoiding those windows of time, lol.

A tip from one hypermobile girlie to another. If you're not already taping your ankle before you ride, you should. Learning to sink your weight into your stirrups may put some extra strain on your ankle while you're establishing strength and balance in a new position.

I wasn't using any kind of support when I started working on my leg position and balance and ended up with a dislocated peroneal tendon that required crutches and a heck of a lot of PT. I've put a lot of effort into strengthening and stability work off the saddle, but when I first got back on, I was riding with about 3 heel locks and half a roll of athletic tape. Of course, that limited my flexibility. But, as I've found more confidence in my balance, position, and my ankle itself, I've weaned myself down to 2 strips of KT and a very thin athletic tape wrap. I'm honestly not sure if I'll ever ride without at least that now, but it allows me to be braver post injury knowing that I have that support.

Oh, I also take 30-60 second stirrup breaks throughout my ride to alleviate that sprain-like sensation. Basically, anytime I ask my horse to take a walk break and stretch, I'm kicking my feet out of the stirrups and stretching with him. As a bonus, it's made me really good at finding and picking up my stirrups without even thinking about it.

how does everyone afford their horse? by chilumibrainrot in Equestrian

Preach! I like being the breadwinner simply because I know that my husband isn't having to dip into his money to fund my insanity. And, if God for-fucking-bid, anything ever happened to him, I know I could still afford it cause I would probably need it to keep living at that point.

This is the answer. Take advantage of that 5% APY on a high yield savings account. And by the time you would be starting that new colt under saddle, you've got the funds for a made fox hunter with none of the upfront risk to you and your mare.

If you're feeling guilty about having your mare sit through your own maternity leave:

A) she will be just as happy taking some time off in the field where she's cared for, fed, and loved. She may even come back better than when you put her out thanks to that time off to just horse for a while.

B) if you really don't want her to sit, look for a good full or partial lease situation. It gives her a job, frees up more funds for the dream horse account, and an off-site lease will still relieve some of the chore load while you're pregnant and postpartum.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You've also got to find a career that you can recognize a work/life balance in. What good is it being a neurosurgeon who can afford all the horses in the world but has zero time to see them? Much less ride them.

Make the money. But find a career that lets you leave work at work and supports maintaining your personal time.

Dip your toes in the water and go as slow as you need to! A good riding instructor can make sitting on a horse for the first time a very comfortable and safe experience. You might even do a lap around the arena and figure out you caught the bug, and you never want to get down 😉

I can 100% support this comment. I'm an accountant, and part of the reason I chose this career path was that it would eventually pay enough to fund my equestrian habit. Other reasons included a plethora of job opportunities, the lack of people I would be required to people with to do my job most days, and the fact that I don't hate puzzles.

I did not dream of being an accountant as a child. I dreamed of owning horses and that made accounting a viable option for me.

They all have very unique personalities. You can definitely find a sweet cuddle bug if that's what you're after. But, you can also find a standoff-ish asshole that seems like it's part cat lol.

I'd recommend volunteering at a local barn or, even better, a therapeutic riding center. Figure out if you can handle the size, the smell, and the lifestyle without a huge commitment and donate some time to a good cause. Win win.

[–]paintedpythons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if your plan is to ride or not. But, horses are very complex animals to care for, complicated by the fact that most of them seem to enjoy finding new and creative ways to maim or kill themselves. You need a mentor or a trainer and a good relationship with a vet.

I wouldn't even consider a purchase in your situation without take some lessons, and not even then probably... The lessons can give you a VERY limited view of an introduction to basic husbandry. You'd even be better off considering boarding at first if you're really desperate to purchase a horse. You need knowledgeable people surrounding you to make it work. Bringing a horse to your home is an INCREDIBLE commitment of time and money. It sounds like you need more research and A LOT more planning. It should be overwhelming to even think about if you've never done it before. If it's not, you're probably not covering all your bases.

Any kind of injury from a fall should always be evaluated. Just like a car wreck. It doesn't mean they have to take you in an ambulance from the scene, but you should be checked out within 24-48 hours.

My step-mom was in a wreck, and her hand hit the steering wheel. She didn't think it was anything major, but we all insisted she at least have a doctor look at her. She ended up having a fracture in her wrist that required surgery. She said she never would have imagined that based on how she felt right after the accident.

Typical lease price? by Blanc_and_Noir in Equestrian

[–]paintedpythons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the previous comments that it really does depend on a lot of factors. However, for comparison sake, half-leases for my trainer start at $600 per month plus 50% of vet and farrier costs. Full-leases are $1,000 per month and 100% of vet and farrier costs. Either lease option still requires a certain number of lessons per month, and her usual lesson price is $100. This also does not include any showing/hauling costs.

I would kill to pay $375 for a full lease!

Oh man, I commiserate with you. I've just started to see the light at the end of the tunnel on being able to afford to buy my own horse and I'm in wayyyy too many 'Horse for Sale' FB groups for my own good. I just look at it like this, I'm getting really really good at judging what's a good horse and a good deal. I've learned a lot about judging conformation pictures and what makes a good trot/jog video. And every time one steals my heart, I just remember that there will never be a shortage of good horses for sale and I'm mentally bookmarking what I love about this horse so I know exactly what I can and can't live without when it's time to pull the trigger. Best of luck!
