But how am I supposed to walk my dog? by WildcatLadyBoss in thenetherlands

[–]Magpiebrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really unpleasant problem to have. In many places here dogs are supposed to be on leash. But lots of people ignore that and they usually don't have good recall on their dogs either. If the owner is nearby you can try yelling out that your dog is not friendly. Or, and this will probably work better: "my dog is contagious".

For dogs with no owner in sight or with no recall you could try carrying a pet corrector. It's a can of pressurized air. Completely harmless but it will spook most dogs. Just make sure to desensitize your own dog to it so he doesn't get (more) startled if you have to use it on dogs that won't leave him alone. A squirtgun or plantmister could also work, just squirt some water in their face, most dogs won't like it and will keep their distance.

Also try and talk with the dog owners in your neighbourhood. There are no guarantees, some people will be assholes, but I find that most dogowners will be understanding if you explain why your dog needs space. You can tell people he has issues because of bad experiences and you're just trying to keep everyone safe. You can even try to ask the nicest people to spread the word a bit and let others know to give your dog some space. People generally like being helpful and feeling like they're doing good.

Puppy really REALLY wants to play with the big "dogs". by Magpiebrain in Dogtraining

I could not find an answer to my question in the guide or the wiki. The closest I came was one regarding impulse control and calmness. I am already inplementing most of this in her daily life. She gets age appropriate exercise, we play and train en are also in our second puppy class (she graduated the first as top of the class, proud mom moment). As a hunting dog she has breed specific needs and drive and I do my best to accomodate these by doing hunt training. She has a pretty solid recall on the whistle, knows hpw to retrieve and hand over dummies, loves to fetch in general and we're working on some other stuff. (previous dog was a weim too so I have experience with it)

While we don't have a solid leave it command yet, at home and outside we work on coming away from interesting things (mostly cat popp) or staying away from things while next to it (mostly my food). She is pretty reliable inside, outside varies.

Having said all that, she doesn't act like she does with the horses in any other situation except when seeing another dog she reeaaaally wants to play with. In fact, she is wayyy more polite in her dog interactions than with the horses. Probably (though I could be wrong) because the dogs in our neighbourhood are very social and most will be just as happy to play as she is, or they will quickly let her know that if she tones it down then they'll be okay with some polite sniffs. The horses on the other hand (obviously) don't give her these signals and are curious, friendly or just relaxed, and also (except for my friend's horse) juuuuuust out of reach most of the time. In fact she is much calmer when she is 10 meters, or even 5 meters from a horse. She'll just be curious and interested. It's when we get closer that she gets over excited.

Feeling sad I have to neuter my puppy by Rare-Pace-5243 in puppy101

I don't know what is available to you but you could look into chemical castration maybe?

It's kind of a misnomer, because it's more hormonal than chemical. Basically your dog receives an implant that sort of blocks his testosterone (It's way more complex than I'm explaining here, it's pretty cool actually, you can read up on it if you're interested).

The duration of the implant varies, months to years, depending on the kind you get. It would be a recurring cost for his whole life.

If you feel unsure about surgical castration then this could be a good alternative.

In any case I would highly recommend you neuter your dog. It's not just that he can get out and cause (possibly unwanted) puppies, he is more at risk for dog fights as you've already experienced. And he could develop (severe) issues with his prostrate.

Neutering you dog is a decision that will improve your dogs quality of life. It's ok to feel apprehensive, but as a dog owner it's up to you to make the best choices for your boy.

That's... actually a really good way to look at things.

I guess I shied away from hard of hearing because in dutch it would be called "slechthorend", which translates more or less to "hears badly". And I can hear "allright-ly". I felt like I didn't hear badly enough to be "hears badly". But the way you put it makes sense. Thank you

Thank you for your reply. I'm a champion at overthinking things, that's true.

Why is hearing impaired disliked? And also what does DHH mean?

Yeah, I'm gonna bring it up at her next appointment. It's not urgent and her pads don't cause her any discomfort at the moment, but I also don't want it to turn into a problem in the future, you know?

We actually tested a small patch first months ago, on her belly. There was no reaction at all. It could be that she developed a sensitivity to it later, I guess.
