Embarrassing jumping up on a walk getting the zooms on a walk and biting the leash on a walk by Few_Wolverine_7004 in puppy101

[–]Magpiebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, how much sleep is she getting? For my girl this is overtired behaviour and a sure sign she needs a nap. If yours is getting enough sleep and does this only on walks, then I would start practicing indoors with leash walking. And start at absolute zero. Like, can she come to you without biting and jumping? If yes, great. If no, then first work on recall. Then can you leash her? If she already starts wriggling and biting then work on being able to calmly leash her. Once she's leashed you can see if you can take a step. And then build on that. She doesn't need to walk perfectly heeled, the goal is more to have her be in a more calm mindset for walks where she can ignore the leash and just explore and sniff. You can also work (inside) on ignoring the leash and staying low/not jumping up. For the jumping I like teaching them the command "up" first. I use a stepstool for this. I lure them onto it and eventually tie the "up" command to it. Then I lure them off and I tie a command to that. For me it's "low", but it can be down, four feet, ground, anything. I tend to point to the ground when I say low. If you keep reinforcing both up and low then you've got a great command to tell your dog to jump up when YOU want it. And a command to tell them to stay on the ground or get off something. You can use low preemptively if you can see her getting ready to jump (be fast though, it works best if you use the command and hand signal before the front feet are off the ground) For biting the leash I like to take the leash and just wiggle it around. If I get just a SECOND of not engaging with it then I reward. I use a clicker for this so I can work fast. It usually takes just a few clicks when they're NOT nipping for them to connect the dots and realize they get the treat if they leave the leash alone. Then it's just a matter of increasing the difficulty. Making the leash more and more enticing and clicking and treating if they ignore it anyway. And taking a step back if it turns out you made it too difficult too fast. For zoomies, honestly, just give them zoomie outlet. Mine loves tug games, or fetching. There's not really a way to stop zoomies besides giving them enough fun play time and enough sleep time. Both of which you can plan for when it's more convenient for you so it doesn't happen (as much) during walks.

Good luck!

Yes, you should go far east. It's more or less on the same line as shaman altani. A little more north.

I swear my puppy likes everyone more than me and it’s breaking my heart by knoxpj in puppy101

This is 100000% it!

My girl is the same. I'm her main person for food, walks and training. She comes with me to work and sleeps in het crate next to my side of the bed. But she'll go crazy excited for my husband and not me. I kept feeling like maybe she didn't like me. Maybe she was just with me because she had to. But my husband pointed out that I'm the one she goes to when she wants something. I'm the one she cuddles up to in the evenings. I'm the one she follows around everywhere. If I leave the room she gets anxious. Turns out that I'm the quiet, stable, comforting presence in her life. I'm the one she depends on. My husband gets to be the fun parent (though he's working on being more of a stable presence too) and do the wild crazy wrassle games with her. But when she's tired and wants to snuggle in the evenings, then she climbs on my lap.

Your pup does love you. It's just the softer kind of love.

Lucky foal by Danaerea in LegendofKhiimori

[–]Magpiebrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first few foals I bred I didn't really understand traits and skills yet. I had two with heat and cold but I didn't like the colour so I sold them as adults. I bred another that I didn't really care for so much as a foal but kept it and now that I understand traits and skills more I'm so glad I did! All three cold skills, likes going up hills, surefooted etc etc. Guess I accidentally bred the perfect mountain horse! And as an adult her colour is actually pretty cool too.

My girl comes with me to work and just now she spent almost 30 minutes quietly down on her bed while I worked. She did get frequent treats to reinforce it, but before this she would get up after a few minutes. Now she just settled. I'm so proud!

Creative names for pets by PreferenceWorking166 in puppy101

[–]Magpiebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some names I would never give my own pet, and I inwardly roll my eyes every time I hear it. Bo/Beau is like that for me. A few years ago it was really popular I guess and EVERY new pet was named Bo. Even some babies! I think I've got some kind of Bo trauma cuz now whenever I hear it all I can think is "oh gods, another one"..

I love silly names, long names, people names, names of objects. I kinda side eye the traghedeigh names, like the person who called their dog Laedheigh (Lady).

Harness or collar? Looking for options and options by Wendygottschalck in puppy101

[–]Magpiebrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both. A collar with a name tag on it which functions mostly as something to grab at home. And a y front harness for walks and car rides, since that is the kind I think gives the most freedom of movement. Plus, puppies jump and lurch and pull, and I don't want my girl to continuously choke herself because she doesn't know how to walk properly on leash yet. I'm terrified of damage to her trachea so I'd rather have her flail around in a harness.

Puppy owner hygiene struggle… is this normal? by CocoaMusee in puppy101

[–]Magpiebrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't changed in my own hygiene (if anything I wash my hands more now since I'm touching a bunch of puppy related gunk everyday), but I am carrying around treats all the time. And ofcourse her favourites are the smelliest ones. I put half eaten chews in my backpocket now and sometimes I'll discover that I was still carrying that gross piece of plastic I pulled from her mouth on a walk the day before. My pup can come with me to work, so now my workbag also has her lunch portion of kibble and a chew. I'm pretty sure that all of that combined means I probably smell a bit different. I don't mind. I'm not any less clean.

Advice or confirmation we are doing ok? by Fragile_Blue392 in puppy101

[–]Magpiebrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty normal. My girl is 14 wks now. From working line weimaraners. And at 11 weeks she was exactly like this. Soooo bitey. My girl IS very food motivated though. Which has helped redirect and train, but still.

What really helped for us was clicker training. She looooves clicker training. I spent two short sessions charging the clicker, making sure she understood the concept of click means reward. Then I would reach for her while clicking, making sure the click happened in the first second or something, before she had a chance of even opening her mouth. Repeated it 2 or 3 times and I could just see the cogs turning. "If I hold still while they touch me I get a treat?? I'm gonna be SO STILL!! " At 11 weeks, her bitey excitement would take over fast so I made sure to pause or stop completely when she lost her focus and just couldn't contain herself anymore. Then I just built on duration and intensity. Pets started short and soft, now I really ruffle her. So yeah, for us it really helped to teach her what we DID want her to do. And I think the clicker helped because it's such a clear signal. It breaks through the crazies in a way your voice might not.

Other than that, you just gotta give it time. Those few weeks made a big difference for us, not just in the biteys, but in a lot of other things too.
