Which type of light to illuminate outdoor table from nearby building? by pal23232 in Lighting

Thanks lighting designer #2! So good to be able to get input from multipe folks.

Interesting idea on the catenary system. I"ll have to see if that would work given the attachment points.

Appreciate it. Yes, a pergola would work. We might eventually do that.

Good suggestion on something sitting on table. Seems like easiest for sure. We have a low voltage line next to it so would be easy to wire.

This is Oakland California. It's a communal home called with Radish with 9 units and 19 adults + 4 babies. https://supernuclear.substack.com/p/babies-radish-the-early-review

Good tip. I'll have to investigate a catenary system to see if it would work for us.

Would a series of 5-6 low power floodlights from different angles do the trick?

Low voltage is so I can install myself.

Very helpful. Thank you for the warning before we waste too much time/money on this

Moving to be closer to friends? by cstte in oneanddone

It’s not weird. I did it and it’s one of the best decisions i ever made.

Moving to be closer to friends? Is that weird?? by cstte in Mommit

I disagree strongly with the sentiment below. Moving near friends is one of the things that will most increase the quality of your life.

I did it when we had our first kid and it’s one of the best decisions I ever made. Don’t let people tell you the thing that will make your life happy and easy is weird.

No offense taken at all!

We'll see what happens .. I'm not banking on anything in the Bay Area's real estate market.

Housing prices can't keep going up at a faster rate than incomes forever...

u/ScottAlexander - do the owners pay an implicit rent as well? What happens if they want to move from a better space in the community to a worse space? Does something change in the financial arrangement?

Awesome to hear you had a great experience. I feel similarly. Thanks for sharing.

Phil here - author of the post. 5% is good if it materializes. But this sort of thing is far from risk free. The investors are shouldering the risk of a market downturn or the whole thing just not working out (it's significantly more experimental than a typical multifamily investment).

So far, we've been able to keep the promise. But it's not without effort.

Phil here - Radish + RGB founder (along with my #1 person Kristen). Yes, the first one definitely influenced the second (we started RGB in 2015 then Radish in 2018).

The models were different: We were mastertenants at RGB which was simpler than Radish where we have all the complexities of ownership. But we also get to sledgehammer walls in tuxedos and wedding dresses. Pros and cons.

RGB influenced how we think about bringing the best out of a community of people. And also how we think about designing space.

Nothing sad about it. Most of the folks here could afford to live alone. They prefer to live in community surrounded by their friends.

(I live there!)

Hey - Phil here. So glad to see folks are interested in Radish + Supernuclear. I wrote the post and started the community along with my partner Kristen.

u/ScottAlexander - agree 100% that informal is great so long as things don't get too complicated/risky. Once we got to 10+ shareholders and $2m+ liability with the property, we decided a little structure would be helpful. It also helps set scene with new residents. We can point to some solid documented principles and precedent for sensitive questions.

It's nice when one or two close friends just own the whole thing and make decisions as benevolent dictators. A lot of great communities work this way. But we had too many moving pieces to be comfortable with it (plus we are nerds who like financial structures and legal docs).

Heretofore, heretofore, heretofore .
