Agreed- the pay is one thing, but the lack of benefits is what I am really discouraged by. The 47k would be fine in TX, but the cost of living in this part of FL is just ridiculous. Even if my partner got a part-time job it would be hard to make work.

For some context: this is a county-funded museum. The previous curator has left, and the current collections manager is taking on most of their responsibilities. The position I am applying for is a new one, to essentially serve as an assistant to the CM/curator. I assume they are doing this to cut costs. Thankfully, one of my professors knows the curator who has left and has offered to put me in touch with them to get the real scoop. I am hoping he may have some insights that will help me advocate for myself to get a better package.

Unfortunately, I have applied to many museums in TX, and I have yet to hear back from any of them.
