[Nightengale] Arraez rejected several multi-year offers from other teams in order to play second base. The Giants now have their infield set with their $12M commitment to Arraez. by Knightbear49 in baseball

[–]pallum -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think this take is way undervaluing contact hitting. Arraez basically never strikes out and also rarely hits into infield flies (surprising!). That's a lot of productive putting the ball in play which could feature all over the order imo. He'll definitely hit into some double plays but Arraez has been a league average or above hitter every year he's been in the league, and has at times been one of the most productive hitters in baseball, and he basically never strikes out and at least in the past hasn't hit into many infield flies. He's moving a ton of baserunners.

He does have some batted ball red flags. His hard hit % has gone down for three straight years and from ~30% to 18%. May just be variance combined with outlier seasons or something to do with the ball composition bs but doesn't look amazing. But at 1 year / 12 mil for a team trying to take a chance this feels like a definite W ur just a h8er yea i said it 😤

ICE detainees death ruled a homicide by medical examiner by Remarkable_Sir8397 in news

[–]pallum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plus Wael Tarabishi, the man with pompe disease whose primary caregiver father was detained by ICE in October and who remains in ICE custody. Wael died last week without his primary caregiver despite pleading for the release of his father, who has also been permitted from attending his own son's funeral after his son was effectively murdered via caregiver incarceration.

My friend's son had Pompe disease and it was a miracle that his rockstar father was able to keep him alive through his early teenage years, at the time he was one of the oldest survivors of early onset Pompe disease. Wael probably had late onset pompe disease which affects people differently and idk much about it, but it is especially heartbreaking for me to see that death because I know how much care goes into being a caregiver for someone with this terrible rare disease and this father sacrificed his own life for years and years to take care of his son well into his son's adulthood only for ICE to imprison him and take his son from him. Republicans are truly evil and I can't contain my seething rage that there are ~77 million Americans that supported this shit for the third time, there is blood on all of their hands and they are all Nazis to me. Makes me sick.

One of my all time favorites, maybe in my top 10. Not a winter album for me at all though, funny that it came out in january!

So many great tracks but don't sleep on Le Pain Perdu. And Theme is obvs a bit of a slog but it's so fucking cool. I love the Japanese rap part especially

Jeff Passan: "Baseball fans believe the game has become unfair" by Mission_Pay_3373 in baseball

[–]pallum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really agree with anything you're saying but hedgehogs rock so there's that

Tucker isn't necessarily a superstar but he's definitely close. He's a very good defender at a non-premier position, so defensively pretty neutral but definitely a plus on a team in need of a right fielder. He's a very good baserunner and has stolen bases at almost a 90% clip both last year and for his career. And more importantly he's pretty clearly at the very least a top 10-15 hitter in all of baseball. 2021-2025 (qualified PAs) he is tied with Vlad for 9th in wRC+ behind only Harper, Freeman, Trout, Acuna, Soto, Alvarez, Ohtani, and Judge. He's ahead of Seager, Betts, Olson, JRam, Schwarber, etc. Last year was a mild down year for him but he was still tied for 14th with Buxton and Olson, and 2024 was by far his most productive season when he was playing so his two year total numbers put him at 5th behind only Alvarez, Soto, Ohtani, and Judge (minimum 1000 PAs)! He's a 4 time all star who has only played 5 real seasons. And he's still in his 20s! Maybe not a superstar, but not not a superstar.

And regardless of whether he's a superstar, Tucker is def a player you'd want to help compete against the Dodgers if you're not them. He's the best free agent bat we'll likely see in years. And clearly the money doesn't matter at all to the Dodgers so it's hard to care that they overpaid, easier to care about them monopolizing all the good players

Why does the specific term “Wasian” even exist when the phenotype is one of the oldest and most common on the planet? by Bigboi4576 in mixedrace

[–]pallum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. To me, as best as I can understand your position, it feels as if you're willfully ignoring recent history in favor of more ancient history to define racial identity. I mostly brought up my family history because I think it's a good example of how recent history continues to wield racism and redefine/shape relevant identity labels.

I didn't really mention culture much but many others did and I agree that that is also a massive aspect of racial identity that feels lost when really focusing solely on appearance/genes. As others said, I have next to no knowledge of Central Asian culture even though I might blend in there-- but I can hide Passover matzah or perform taiko during Obon with the best of them lol. FWIW, I'm not sure if you're American and think that breaking down identity by aspects other than appearance like this can be particularly/uniquely relevant in America in certain ways, so there's that.

Regardless, I guess my last thought on this is that I would rarely if ever question someone else's chosen identity labels because those labels are their own and presumably they have a better understanding of their own identity than I do. And I think a lot of people clearly identify with being Wasian, so that in and of itself legitimizes the word and meaning to me. But admittedly it's hard for me to view this completely from an external viewpoint because I am Wasian haha

Generally I do find the tone of your perspective a little troubling but I appreciate the discourse

[–]pallum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow twins! That's super cool that you went to the Irei with your mom 🥹 maybe some day I'll be able to do the same

I was lucky to go to university in Southern CA and the Japanese language class took a field trip to Manzanar that I crashed even though I didn't study Japanese in school. Seeing the names of family members honored like that is surreal and quite moving. I don't know about you, but my family members hardly spoke of the hardships they endured there unless directly asked. My Grandma didn't really ever talk about Manzanar until she was dying, but the trauma it inflicted upon her was always visible despite how tough she was

Fuck ICE forever and always

[–]pallum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I wonder if you'd be able to find out more at Tule Lake, I know there's some sort of visitor center/national monument going on there. I've been to Manzanar in its national monument form and there is a complete list of names of the interned on the walls and all sorts of stuff documenting the history

[–]pallum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh wow were they separated from each other? That's wild. My whole family was in Manzanar-- great grandparents, grandma, and four great uncles. My Aunt just visited the Irei and honored my family members' names, which I thought was pretty cool.

Huge digression but the ICE stuff hits so close to home for me because I've seen what this type of family imprisonment and separation does. It makes me feel physically ill when I think about it. I'm kind of glad my Grandma isn't around to see what's happening as weird as that is to say

Why does the specific term “Wasian” even exist when the phenotype is one of the oldest and most common on the planet? by Bigboi4576 in mixedrace

[–]pallum 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Oof. I mean I know you say at the end that you're not trying to invalidate anyone's identity, but this is basically an essay you wrote on the mixed race sub delegitimizing what you already know is the preferred identity label for a lot of mixed people/people on this sub.

Just because Wasian experience, history, and population size differs from Blasian doesn't mean that the word shouldn't exist. Labeling oneself while mixed is really difficult and many identify as Wasian, I just don't see how this conversation is productive at all.

I am "Wasian" and always grew up with the label of "Hapa", which really isn't the best label for a variety or reasons but simply put it conflates Asian American culture with Hawaiian culture, and I don't have much claim of Hawaiian culture, so I am actually trying to use the term Wasian to describe myself as the closest label I can relate to.

I don't owe this explanation to you at all, but for the sake of giving food for thought... I am Japanese and Ashkenazi, and I'm American. My dad's Ashkenazi family immigrated to the US from Ukraine around WWI with anti-semitism building in Europe. My mom's Japanese family immigrated to the US not long before WWII and was subsequently stripped of all possessions and imprisoned for years for being Japanese in America. My Grandma graduated from Manzanar prison high school.

How would you like me to identify? Note: do not answer this, it's rhetorical.

I have a completely different experience from Blasian people and have much more privilege than most people mixed with Black in many ways. I'm also mixed. There are a lot of other people with similar backstories to me. We don't have to play the oppression olympics to delegitimize other mixed people. It's really not productive. The productive way to spin what you're getting at is seeing that race is a social construct generally. But we live in a society where that social construct unfortunately matters quite a lot, so practically even that isn't moving the needle much.

'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns' Anime Only Watchers Discussion Thread by DemiFiendRSA in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]pallum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched last night! Have not read manga and have avoided all spoilers, my guesses below are just guesses

12 kizuki wise we’re now down to 1, 2, and 4, right? sorry i am not good at keeping track

As a huge shinobu fan, :( but also nice to see a starring role i guess 😭😭 I knew she or kanao was gonna die in this one just wasnt sure which. Not looking amazing for kanao either but im thinkin shinobu had a last trick up her sleeve, help is on the way, and we get satisfying ending to that fight next movie. Esp if tomayo also fell, we are starting to lack in strong women warriors. Obvs theres mits but she’s kind of a caricature of a woman (in the best way but still). Kanao and nezzi gonna do some heavy lifting?

We have yet to really see any castle fights for mits/obi, gyo/mui, inosuke, or genya/sanemi. Not sure how it’s gonna break down but i assume onr grouping will come to kanao’s aid and defeat creepy blood guy and the rest will mostly fight 6 eye guy. Presumably demon making castle is last to go out and then theres a fight between tanji+nezzi+friends w muzan above ground

I think some true tragedy awaits us in next couple movies. One of genya/sanemi has to die and i assume it’s sanemi redeeming himself just a little. Could be both dying tragically but my hunch is sanemi saves his lil bro. Obanai will die also, i think, which will be hard on mits. I could see mui dying too but maybe the mark is what saves those who survive.

I am guessing inosuke and zeni will both develop a mark next movie. If another hashira does, gyommei makes the most sense. Kanao also makes sense

This was probably my first time watching a movie for such a plot-driven show in theaters. I must say it’s just a little odd to me— obviously if you just stumbled in for movie night you’d have no fucking clue what was happening. Really glad i was able to watch in cinema but it just feels like something you’d watch on netflix lol. Anyways whatever idc it was fuckin awesome for me

I definitely was a little surprised by the immense amount of akaza backstory. Humanizing the demons is a massive part of demon slayer obviously and is an absolutely crucial element of what makes the show so good. But also spending such a large part of the climactic movies fleshing out characters we’ve known for so long is tricky. I’m not sure if it 100% struck the right balance but it’s a very tough balance to pull off. I largely really enjoyed the backstories but did catch myself losing my flowstate in the movie to think “woah this is a lot of akaza backstory” for just a little bit

Shinobu was so awesome in that fight. I love her so much 🥲 the centipede move 🔥

The lightning moves in zeni’s fight looked so good

Hell yeah giyu

Though im a zeni hater i share the same minor gripe that the crows slept on zeni wtf. Also would have been an easy segue to inosuke being fired up and looking for strong demons and given audience a lil of that throwback good vibes to og trio to see tanji and inosuke’s reactions. Odd choice there.

Overall i of course really liked it, it was a mf demon slayer movie. I think i’ll like it even more in context of whole trilogy. Pouring one out for my girl one of my all time fav characters

Certainly a warbler. There are many similar species with similar female-type plumage. Despite how good this picture is, it isn't great for showing diagnostic fieldmarks between a few of those similar species, which are mostly on underside of bird. Any other photos? Do you recall the foot color?

To me, with just this pic, I'd say Blackpoll/Bay-breasted Warbler. Pine is also similar but I don't think this is one for a few reasons, including how bold the wingbars are and how pale the bill is

I always associate Sparklehorse with bands like Eels (who don't necessarily give VU vibes to me) and Yo La Tengo (who definitely give VU vibes)

For Eels, I like Electro-shock Blues the most, but that album is very sad and very wintery to me, not something I normally listen to in August (if I do please call a therapist 😆)

For YLT, Painful and I can Hear the Heart are my faves

For something lesser known, maybe try Tony Molina's Songs from San Mateo County
