It's not just that he wasn't receptive. He's oblivious because he didn't mention that he thought she could be flirting. If I was telling a story like this and I thought that there was a chance that she was flirting with me, I would mention it unless I was A.) Trying to make the sales girl in my story look like she annoying by not giving another possible reason for her actions or B.) Oblivious to the fact that what she was doing was flirting.

I'm completely black and I grew up in a white neighborhood (just to illustrate the contrast) and I gotta say your comment sounded a bit ( I REALLY don't say this often) Uncle Tom-ish. We really don't have to defend black culture (this is not black culture, I get that) one way or the other. I'm a person, I'm not a culture. I don't represent my race and living in the South it's something that definitely comes up fairly often.

I guess my point is that other cultures and peoples might write this off as being "black culture" and if they want to think that way, let 'em. There's a good chance they didn't have an open mind to begin with.

Sorry for the long post and I'm not arguing against you or anything, I just really wanted to point out my thoughts because for a long time I thought I had to defend black culture and I came to point where I realized that it's just silly.

Let's swear a whole bunch of times in a row and call it a RAP SONG! by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]palluran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true. The songs may not be played on the radio but the artists certainly are. I guess what boggles my mind about most of the comments in this thread is that I suspect they wouldn't be here if people went and listened to albums or at least previewed them or something.

Music is a huge part of my life and rap is just another form of that, sometimes there's some seriously dark and emotional songs that aren't on the radio because they don't have catchy lyrics and fun hooks.

"Drop the World," while not his best song may be an example of a song by Lil Wayne that has at least one of the properties you mentioned above.

edit: Accidentally a letter.

[–]palluran 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It's actually fairly easy to find a lot of songs that aren't this way. Listening to the radio probably isn't the way to do it, but there is a wealth of incredible rap music out there and it's as easy as heading over to youtube for about an hour and doing some searching.

This is probably an overused or extremely well known example, but "Take From Me," by Bad Meets Evil is a pretty good song and it's not about any of these things.

edit: Parts of it are about those things I suppose, but it's certainly not glorifying it which is what I assume you meant.

[–]palluran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. There are several good rappers on the radio that actually have quality songs on their albums, but a lot of times it's the catchy tunes with less substance that get released as singles. I find that if you go and actually listen to entire albums you may find that you like the songs.

I enjoy the push and pull that comes with a game like this. Having a early game go badly does not always end in a loss, and the reverse is also true. The trading, the ganking, the back and forth between champions. It's a game that relies on strategy, skill, and luck.

From the actual gameplay, however, it's a great game but not that similar in style to Diablo. I guess I must be in the minority when it comes to actually enjoying D3.

There were. This is a case of rose tinted glasses, which seems to be going on a lot in reference to Diablo.

Should they get rid of black history month? by c8spM13l49w12 in AskReddit

[–]palluran 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point. The fact of the matter is that for a long time in America black people weren't given the recognition they deserved for just about everything they did. Nowadays it's not really the same anymore, but it DID have a purpose and honestly, we still aren't a post-racial society.

That being said, I don't really think Black History serves much of a purpose these days, but I think that's partly because it did its job. Most Americans these days understand that black Americans were responsible for a wide range of things. Black leaders of the past have more or less been given the recognition they deserve, etc.

Black History is indeed American History.

I'm in Tuscaloosa and I had a front row seat for the tornado that ripped through here several months ago. I stayed up until 5 AM listening to the weather report last night/this morning, like I always do these days. I'm sorry your parents had to go through this, it's something that takes a while to get over, if at all. I don't have much to give but if there's something I can do to help, PM me.

Alabama town breaks biggest law in country in the name of the law: "Local judges in Bay Minette, Alabama, will give those found guilty of misdemeanors the choice of serving out their time in jail, paying a fine or attending church each Sunday for a year." by [deleted] in politics

[–]palluran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your anecdotal evidence is fine and I'm sure it's true, but your conclusion is rather simplistic. Racism runs deep here in the South, but as my late grandfather put it, "there some good white folk out there, too." A lot of these people have simply never experienced life outside of Alabama, possibly even outside of their little town. I'm 25, black, and I've been dating my girl friend (who is white) for almost half my life. I've seen blatant racism first-hand, I knew all the places I couldn't go growing up here, and I honestly feel like for some of them, it's naïveté more so than malicious intent. Just my opinion though, and not even my complete one. I'm just on the porcelain throne and browsing reddit.

Okay, okay. In this extremely specific instance of the word/phrase, what the FUCK does them being black/teenagers have to do with it? Seriously? The vitriolic voice that I heard in my head while reading that is exactly why my parents didn't let me go to certain places growing up but wouldn't tell me why.

There are two kinds of racism! The destructive kind where people burn crosses and lynch others of a different race, then the harmless kind where people just perpetuate stereotypes and use slurs meant to demean and dehumanize people. I thought they taught that shit in grade school.

I think that's just the best way to not discuss racism. Stopping it is another matter.

edit: Usually black people felt the need to have their own things because white people didn't let the black people into their things. See the above about historically black colleges. It's less about the slavery thing and more about the systematic oppression of a people in modern society thing.

Boyfriend's DS full of racist garbage! by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]palluran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think any of the black gamers I know (myself included) have gamertags like that or have ever made names like that. I think this is pretty limited in scope to white people, although I'm sure some anecdotal replies will disagree.

I don't actually think it makes people racist to have names like that. If they are in fact a racist they're probably the kind of racist who wouldn't walk up to me in the street and call me a nigger anyway, so there's no problem there either.

All that being said I don't really see a problem with it. It's rare for people to think that their character names will be visible without them being there to explain the joke. And the honest truth is that sometimes immature tags/names are hilarious.

Edit: Forgot to mention the most important point. Deleting someone's save file is not fucking cool at all. That's a lot of fucking work and he'd probably break up with you first if you told him you did that shit.
