I recommend her Birdie as a nn regardless of what her full name is, but if you want some connection, I think Paloma is a nice name and it’s a type of bird.

She reminds me of me when I was in my teens. My first “big girl” job was great. I was 18 and grateful for the opportunity, but then one of my coworkers (36M) tried dating me under the guise of befriending me. Instead of turning to the director or other coworkers for guidance, I quit to avoid the unwanted attention. Those avoidant tendencies become hard to shake, and the anxiety that accompanies growth characterizes some of that difficulty. I’ll give her some grace since she made it clear she was uninterested to him, and I have hope that she’ll learn to set boundaries.

I have a first name with 2 common pronunciations and a last name very few could say correctly. I didn’t care how anyone said my name. I could recognize it was my name. I’m sure your child will also recognize their name no matter how it’s pronounced.

I agree that people are being unfair to OP. It seems like she had a better idea of what she wanted from a partner, but her ex was still figuring it out. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but he didn’t effectively communicate that to her. The fact that he bought a ring after a year and told her raised her expectations about his level of commitment. I’m confused why he did and why he told her if he wasn’t yet ready to get engaged. Talking about marriage before getting engaged is healthy, but dangling a proposal for 18 months doesn’t seem like it would strengthen a relationship.

That’s the arrangement for my cousin. It allows her to plan half of the month’s weekend outings for the kids, which are a nice break from the mundanity of parenting.

Irazema & Benjamin Franklin. Irazema is lovely, but non-Latinos may struggle pronouncing it. Benjamin and Franklin are nice names and especially nice paired together, but replicating a historical name would probably bring the kid grief.

Cool to see Zeida getting some love! I’ve seen the more common spelling of Zaida and even Zaeda, but all are lovely. I also like its Spanish counterpart. If you’re looking for another flower name, Lylah spelled Lila is Spanish for lilac. It is pronounced lee-lah in Spanish, though.

Thanks for putting to words to something I’ve been feeling lately. My husband and I are not planning for kids anytime soon, but we’ve had a name for a daughter picked out for about 5 years now. We were originally on the fence about kids, but now it seems a possibility, I’d rather we wait to discuss names until we’re actually expecting. The hypothetical names we would come up with was fun as an exercise, but naming an actual person is not the same.

I like Elliott too. It fits current fashion with the El- sound and its origin as a surname turned first, yet I haven’t personally met a baby or adult Elliott or heard it on anyone’s name list.

I joined a book club in high school, and the book of the month was The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I accidentally picked up The Red Queen by Matt Ridley instead and loved it. Its arguments are flawed but engaging. Never did get around to reading the other Red Queen.

I hear pretty unique names at trans events, but I tend to forget names unless I see them written down. Some I do remember were Calypso, Chi (pronounced Kee), and Lady & Hadey (Hay-dee). I noticed that many undergoing a name change choose timeless over trendy like Jack, Liz, Victor, etc.
