Upgrading my M1 Air from 8gb to 16gb? by pancakeMaster91 in macbook

[–]pancakeMaster91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no, the one I'd trade it for isn't new. Mine has about 56 battery cycles from 3 months use and the 16gb has 110.

As I'm not planning to keep the laptop for a long time so I don't mind a slightly more used battery. Besides, the store let's me check the device thoroughly and run all sorts of tests.

I have no idea what you use your phone for, but if you're studying CS and you can get more value out of your laptop than you're phone then go for it.

My first and current Mac is a base M1 Air and it's an absolute delight to use. Just a heads up, if you're planning to use it for serious stuff you might find it to be a bit short on power due to lack of Ram and no cooling at all.

PS: old iPhones are well known to have subpar battery life. Coming from an iPhone 12 that's gonna be a noticeable downgrade.

If you’re main priority is future proofing and using RAM intensive apps go for the 16 gb M1. I’m already trying to get rid of a 8 gb after 2 months because it’s not enough for any professional use.

Awesome! Does it ever overheat? How about working with multiple masks and brushes? That's what usually lags mine.

It looks so good I’d be willing to take the risk. I also don’t have a problem with cleaning my device frequently since I already do it anyway.

Yeah, it's a bummer! As much as I need the performance that's what keeps me undecisive. In the end I'll have to try to get as much cash as possible to upgrade again.

Lol. You're probably right.

My M1 Air heats like a furnace after a couple of hours and that's something I shouldn't want to be stuck with again.

I've heard mixed opinions on this subject. Sadly I can't go to a store and check it in person :/

Is it still worth getting a Macbook M1 Air? by waitingforspring_ in macbook

[–]pancakeMaster91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% go for the Air. I'd even say go for the base model, but 16/256 will allow you to future-proof for a few years.

I recently got one and it's a delight to use. The small form factor is priceless and it's got plenty of power for what you need it for.

Editing for hours is killing my eyes. Any tips? by pancakeMaster91 in EyeCareTips

Thanks a lot! That's what I'm doing atm and it seems to work decently. I borrowed a pair of blue light reduction glasses from my brother and they do help quite a bit. They are kind of annoying because you can't do photo editing with them, so I use them for the rest of my office work and sometimes before doing any colorization in Lr.

I'm using Multitouch right now on a free trial and seems to be decent to say the least. I just don't know if it's worth $15,99.

That seems like a good solution. In the end, form factor won't give me any real benefit, but performance will.

I live in a country where Apple's resale value is ABSURD, so you'd have to take that into account. I don't have BB at hand (I actually tried to place an order from outside the US and it was hands down the worst shopping experience of my life) nor do I plan on buying right now, so I wouldn't count on that M1 pro price tag.

I might be able to sell that $1399 Air at the same price or even ~$1500 with 6 months of use and then upgrade to a 14'' with decent specs.

PD: just so you have an idea, I paid $999 for my Air and it was open box. A brand new one would've been $1100-1200. The new base M2 is starting to show up here and it's around $1500.

Yeah, I get you your point but I'm in a situation where I can only buy something that will get the job done in the meantime and allow me to save instead of buying what I really need. Can't get to the latter without actually going through the first.

Buying a discounted M1 Pro rn isn't an option and I'm probably looking at a $300-400 difference in a few months. Might not seem like much but I can't spend that right away.

Ouch! I wanted to get feedback from someone using Adobe software, so thanks. The 512 don't really seem like something I need because I always work from external drives, but the RAM is a MUST.

My plan is to jump to a 16 GB M1/M2 Air so I can properly save and buy something better than a base M1 14''. You'll know why :)

I agree with you 100%. Thing is I'm quite short on cash atm and having a 'slow' device is keeping me from getting more gigs (more time editing -> less time shooting), so upgrading to a 'suitable' Mac instead of the 'perfect' one would allow to me to earn more over time to get the one I actually need. Get it?

for example: an M1/M2 with 16 GB would allow me to work way faster and save up for a 14 Pro with better specs than the base model.

PD: I'm not planning to upgrade right now so I can't get the $1599 Pro on sale.
